World Champion Farrier, Steven Beane, shows his expertise on Friesian Horse Apollo's chipped hooves

You can tell in so many ways how comfortable Apollo is: ears either up or relaxed, head is down, rubbing his head on the apprentice (& Steven too, it looked like), picking his feet up even before being asked, not swishing his tail & slapping people with it. And definitely not pulling on Rens. A dual mark: on how good Steven is and how well you've trained him.

I am always impressed with those who do this work. My Dad did farrier work as a younger man and it was so hard on his back. Steve is an artist as well as a clinician. It is interesting to see how he dealt with the chipped and damaged hooves. Apollo was a saint and helpful throughout. I am always amazed at how calm horses can be with the smoke coming off their hooves and the smell (and heat) and then, the banging and scraping. I am sure Apollo knows what is coming with it by now but I remain impressed.

They are really fantastic these people who make these shoes for horses' hooves, there is really a great work of patience and strength, Apollo is very good at allowing to help.

I sat down this evening after a busy day at work, eating fish & chips watching Apollo getting his new shoes being put on by the world's greatest farrier. Very relaxing 😌 too.🥰🥰 Bless Apollo’s big heart he makes it very easy for the farrier to do his feet & the apprentice to finish off doing Apollo’s hooves. There is nothing quite so important to a horse’s well-being as a good farrier; it can make or break a horse. You are blessed to have this brilliant gentleman to care for your horses! I never knew there was such a thing as a World Champion farrier. My old brain loves learning new stuff! Leave it to you Tara to give your boyz only the best! My home in Connecticut used to be a blacksmiths farm back in the 1800s. Whenever we dig up for a garden or fence, we find all kinds of interesting things, like square nails- no round ones- and broken tools, like the horse nail clipper.. One thing we have never found is a whole horse shoe, only halves. And none of them match together, so no luck for us!

Difficult hoof, very well shod......Steven is a true champion. The weather in the UK lately has a lot to answer for. Hopefully some dry, sunny days and less water in the fields will help to get those hooves growing better.

You are so lucky to have such a specialist farrier within reach. I hope Apollo's hooves improve quickly. He's such a good boy to stand so patiently for all that work.

Hi Tara and Rens and Steve , It is so very true -- it is imperative for the health of your horse (s) to have the best farrier. One practice I thought was important as well, I stayed with my horse while the farrier worked on my horse too , some folks would choose not too, but I wanted to know first hand exactly what my farrier' s thoughts were about the horse's hooves and gait and to see the interaction between the horse and the farrier . All the rain 🌧️ ☔ you have had let some stones come to the surface of the feild . When Apollo is running his hoof must strike the ground with such force . Sometimes when he goes thundering ⚡past the camera I swear I can almost feel the ground shake under my feet , it sounds powerful .

Such skill from Steven - you can tell he is the best. Apollo looks wonderful in his woolly coat. He is so relaxed and friendly - " new shoes - yeah whatever" I'll try not to ruin these. I'll be lighter on my feet when galloping - er....no I won't, cos I love thundering around when I'm out. Gorgeous boy. 🐎🥕🙄🤗🤗

Apollo is a big powerful horse those feet have to carry all that weight and as we can see his hooves break down very quickly without shoes and this was on softer ground over winter. Shoes removed to stop the snow balling in his hooves if I am correct. Some horses just need shoeing when they are in work and during the warmer months when the ground is harder.

Hi Tara and Rens, Even Steve the ferrier says " Good boy, good lad" to Apollo. He is such a good horse and his relationship with Rens is so nice to see - they have bonded for sure. Apollo is so busy being herd leader and keeping that minx Bella in line he is working his hooves to the bone, so to speak! Tara you mentioned clipping Apollo's coat so he won't get too hot. Do horses shed like dogs? Would Apollo shed his winter coat eventually, aided by brushing, or is it faster and tidier to clip him? I'm glad Apollo goes to a skilled ferrier -he deserves the best.

Steve is excellent at his profession. Apollo thinks so, too. Just wondering if many women become farriers. The apprentice did a great job, too.

So a curious question - did Apollo go with no shoes for a bit? I keep my horse shod all the time but do wonder if a break would be good. Your farrier is amazing. Such a hard job to get everything just right.

How do you do it said Farouk, I don’t know what you mean said Apollo, get your feet in such a mess when you’ve barely been anywhere let alone work while my feet stay perfect. Apollo puffing himself up in indignation said I’ll have you know I have worked all winter and with very few jollies, I have been left in charge of Bella time and again, playing the bucking game, running races with her, getting up at night when she wanders out of the field shelter, teaching Rens how to ride me, helping with and over seeing field and home maintenance, I have been run off my hooves and it shows. All right said Farouk keep your coat on, that coat must weigh a ton it’s so thick, perhaps too heavy for your feet, Apollo looked straight at Farouk and said… you can go off horses you know and put his nose in the air leaving a uncomfortable silence, Farouk decided he’d put his hoof in it once again and best be quiet. 😂

I don't understand why Apollo's hooves were affected by being in the field, and having little snow.
