Van der Poel got a flat because of tubeless tires. His rear wheel slid out and hit the barrier on that downhill which, most likely, broke the seal at the edge of the rim.
He had 5 flats, and they all ride on tubeless tires. Team V aert chose fore more pressure in them. Less grip but less chance for a flat. They played it safe instead of fast. VdP was the better rider but took to much risk. V Aert played it smart and kept plowing instead of trying to fly and break his bike.
@@jessica_beck It’s in basic cyclocross science to ride tubular, because if you ride with such low pressure a on tubeless or clincher, the tire will simply just slide out when you turn, and you’d eventually be riding on your rims. Which is obviously very impractical
@@JL-cn1qi Many people think it was more the fact that Wout got the special green tire treads (old Michelin Muds) from Niels Albert. The theory is that since they were older tires the rubber was harder and this protected him from the many flats that everyone else got in the race from all the sharp rocks in the ground. This race was just nuts. Everyone but Wout as flatting left and right. So hard to follow because one minute a rider would be up there and then the next they were gone with a flat.
@@JL-cn1qi Nothing smart. Sheer luck and OTHER tubes. Van der Poel was easily the best one. Since after eacht flat tyre he drove away from Van Aert. Next Sunday Van Aert will win, he is the better of the two this season but from 2016-201, when Van Aert became champion Van der Poel was the best cyclist out there. NEvertheless, in 2018 Van Aert was also a deserved chapmpion.
a golden rule of cyclocross is: "keep up the momentum". So if the climb is steep enough, the speed drops to a point where it is faster to run, hence, they run with the bike.
