Kgotso, since you feel "horrified" by the mispronunciation, you should perhaps contact Mr Loock directly and personally advise him on proper African pronunciation and diction, as this world-class choir often performs African songs. As one of South Africa's best and most longstanding 'export' choirs, it can only stand them in good stead.

As a South African who speaks Zulu and Xhosa fluently I must agree with Kgotso Bopane. Upto to day I still cringe at listening to the pronuciation of the songs and lyrics. However i have let it be, albeit sadly because nobody is prepared to listen to advice. As much as I respect the conductor and his team I have found that they may be insulted, and victimise the choristers of which one was my grand daughter. What I can not understand is the fact that some of the singers are in fact Xhosa speaking. Ask yourself why have they not pointed this out, "dont interfere with the teachers" is a common uccurence in our country.

Henk Vermeulen At this time there were no Xhosa or Zulu speaking people in the choir so no one could have said anything because no one knew. unfortunately we knew but we were too nervous and boiling in the sun that we forgot the pronunciation. But ALL of us the times home language was English or Afrikaans.

Henk Vermeulen As an ex-choir member (2011-2014 and on or two concerts in 2015) and was a member of the choir at the time of Riga (unfortunately I could not go with to this particular choir game, but did practice with them up until departure and sang these songs hundreds of times over my years there) I disagree with you completely. Especially on the "don't interfere with teachers" remark. On multiple occasions Oom Hennie would ask any members whose native tongue it was for tips on pronunciation and I can distinctly remember one occasion where he asked a new member (my friend) on how to pronounce the words of a Xhosa song and then for the next who-knows-how-long we'd be practicing it according to her guidance. Not only was he open for advice, but would even ask for it (even from a small new member). If we did a song in a language someone in the choir was fluent in, we'd check our pronunciation. I would, however, like to add that this particular performance was below average (as far as other performances by them have been) and in 2014 we had a lot more new members than usual, as they nearly outnumbered old members. Meaning that about half the choir at this point had only recently begun learning these songs. If, after all he'd done, you still didn't get it right, then it was indeed our fault. Not everyone is good at mimicking accents, and may I add that Xhosa and Zulu singers don't always have English pronunciation down to a T. If I appear rude or hurriedly trying to defend them, then please know that was not my intension. I only meant to tell you my experience with them on this particular matter.

Shamel Renge Hey! He checked at least some of them previously (must have been before you joined or something). :)

i must find this a little sad, most horrified at the way a south African choir could butcher the pronunciation of the African songs...PLEASE i was in Riga and as a south African i expect better. Prefect the African pronunciation before you french and Latin
