Robbie Doyle is an engineer, and inductee into the Sailing Hall of Fame, founder of Doyle Sails, and is designing and building Arabella's sails. We are thankful. We are proud.
In this video, we visit the Doyle Sails loft in Salem, Massachusetts, and hear what he's doing for our rig. He's a professional sailmaker who's undaunted about working modern shapes and materials into this classic rig. He's updating and modernizing it using computational fluid dynamics to nail down the best shape for a cruising boat with big travel plans. And yeah, there are topsails.
We see Doyle Sails' sewing machines, production floor, and the program in which Robbie Doyle is designing Arabella's sails.
Since the "sail bones are connected to the spar bones", our spar builder came along, too. Keith Mitchell, @shipwrightskills-keithmitchell, talks about his thoughts on the benefits of the gaff rig we'll have on this DIY wooden sailboat. He has been preparing for the work that he will do in Vermont at his shop. Follow him on Instagram where he's posted about his progress: @shipwrightskills

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

It is a real testament to the quality of this project and the integrity of Steve that Robbie Doyle made the approach rather than the other way around. To have one of the top sail makers in the world design and make the sails for a "home" made boat is amazing. I guess the thing is that Robbie Doyle does not need Acorn to Arabella for any reason other than he sees it as a great fun project that is worthy of his support. All credit to him and what a great honour of Steve.

KP has to be one of the most unique people I've ever heard before. And I've met a lot of people. So much emotion conveyed on body language alone. You are going to have to do like reunions or something every so many years. The saddest part of this project coming to a finish is we are going to miss all these characters you've collected along the way, steve! Hey in all seriousness though, I hope as you learn to sail, you take us along! I'll never sail in my lifetime, but as a person who loves to know, I've always wondered how sailing works! Love the gaff design with the topsails, Arabella is going to look extra pretty under full sail. You won't regret using a high quality track slide on the mast vs. mast hoops.

To change around the movie title from field to "Ocean of dreams", it is true, "If you build it they will come." Having Doyle offer his services is like a sports legend you follow walking up to your front door and asking, "Hey, want to come outside and play?" I am not a sailor or a sports fan for that matter, and you have drawn me to your adventure. A true testament in your ability to have people at the top of their field want to help with the project and join in your vision. Your team is amazing and just keeps getting better.

I really like the combination of those two working together to come up with a complete rig. Not sure if I saw Keith wince when Robbie said make a hollow mainmast, but like he was saying before you visited the sail loft, minimizing your weight aloft is key. You guys were talking about which cart goes before which horse, but you do have the hull lines and scantlings, and your complete rig has to serve that. I'm suddenly way more interested in this project than I had been.

While there’s simplicity in the number of lines and sticks, having the highly tensioned rig that’s needed for Marconi presents its own complications. It’s all a tally sheet and down to preference.

So happy to see you finally start work on the boat rigging and sails. You have found the world experts with Doyle. If you are thinking that you may do single-handed sailing Arabella, you should go try sailing a small boat, first. You said that you had no sailing experience, so now would be the time to start learning to sail. There are thousands of small boats that you can find for learning the basics. One thing you will discover is that having a crew makes sailing sooo much easier. I predict that you will most likely have a crew on Arabella. It will be worth it just having a companion to talk to when you boat is stuck out at sea in a dead calm, and nothing around you but water.

@@AcornToArabella hmm dunno. Best sailinglessons i ever received were on a tiny wooden flatbottom with sliding keels on both sides(oldskool frisian wooden flatbottom sailboats from earlier centuries)...learned how sails and wind actually work and in these tiny tubs you are instantly dead in the water if something is off(sails or skliding keels). ..I hardly ever use my rudder since. Learn in a basic sailboat to get the sailingskills down, it will be a benefit/joy forever. Happy sailing

Gaining traction with the rural approach of "one step at a time". Congrats to having Mr Doyle interested in the Arabella project. Quite the ennoblement of Your efforts and achievements so far I'd say. And quite the ennoblement of Your future plans, too, given his remark about "...didn't want to become a part of *_these people_* going around..." . With the Falcon project (which I followed closely) they showed a very unique, out of the box approach to "weird" ideas without ruling out any option just for its weirdness. Great step towards probably one of the most manageable "Ingrids" with traditional looks ever built so far. Thanks for sharing!

@@AcornToArabella I'm working on a memoir. I've never written something like this before, and there's a lot of learning on the fly for me. I'm learning a lot about myself and the writing process, and am trying to tell the story in way which will be as meaningful for my potential readers as the experiences were for me as I lived them. In addition, part of the writing process these days - especially for an unknown author - is building an audience or following prior to publication. So, I am going to try to keep up with a social media presence (likely RU-vid and TikTok) to share the experience, grow a community of people interested for whatever reason, and see what I am finally able to produce. Along the way, I still plan on dropping a video about the trip I took to see y'all and Arabella last winter. LOL, while I find writing to be a challenge, I find successfully editing a video to be a miraculous occurrence! The specific thought I had when making my original comment on this video was because at the moment, I'm having difficulty seeing how two parts of my story will come together in the way I need them to. Kind of like you all seemed to be experiencing with the sail and rigging. I know I'll figure it out, and this particular video reminded me it's part of every creative process. You all continue to inspire me, and I hope to be able to make it up that way again.

I fitted an Antal high strength fibre system track and cars to my boat/rig this year. beautifully engineered, super simple, low stack height, strong and low friction. its a great recommendation from Robbie Doyle. recirculating ball tracks/cars are good, but too many moving/wear parts, not as robust and for about of Arabella's size, not needed. Doyle sails are a fine choice indeed. Back when we sailed our 6-metre (SWE 101 "Marilyn" built by and for P Norlin in 1982) our best sails where always the Doyles, and the spinnackers even more than so. Congrats!

What a great episode. I'm so impressed with the expertise Mr Doyle and team, especially Keith, brings to the project. How do I know? I read the comments...there are so many fans, including really experienced fans, that share their experiences, that gives me the confidence that Steve is the Man.

This is pretty exciting stuff. The way you're dealing with the rigging and sails as a group thing makes perfect sense I couldn't imagine doing it any other way. I'm no sailing expert by any means but I'm thinking Arabella is going to be a pretty fast boat. I loved the 3D model of the sails. The gentleman from Doyle sails seemed pretty excited about the whole project. I can't wait to see you guys next June it feels like that's a long way off, relativity is a bummer sometimes.

You have been blessed to get the best sail maker around to design your rigging. She will be the best that you can make her. I think people everywhere will be amazed at her speed. Can't wait to hear the sound of the wind in her sails. That and the ocean will be the most addicting thing you will ever do.

When it is finally on the water... take a black and white photo on a day with some clouds. Think Ansel Adams. Then post process it with some sepia effect. Probably can do this all in the digital realm. The sails full of air and the boat slightly healed is a beautiful sight.
