In this video, Nathan tries HARD on a max grade bouldering project at The Climbing Hangar with Emil. Not only is Emil a talented climber, it turns out he's also a pretty fantastic coach, and helped Nathan to unlock some potential on this yellow boulder.
Sticking with bouldering problems or moves that feel beyond us can be an uncomfortable undertaking. In this week's video, we take a deeper dive on a single boulder to illustrate the power of persevering. Whilst it’s often easy to feel discouraged if a boulder in the gym doesn’t go quickly, switching the mindset to find satisfaction in small adjustments and progressions can be an incredibly valuable tool to unlock potential we don’t always know we have. I hope you enjoyed this video, and we’ll see you in our next!

In this video Emil emerges as a very good coach, with a great understanding of body position and movements. I think we don't often see this side of him, I really liked it!

Definitely! Really insightful stuff from Emil and I know Nathan found his analysis really useful!

He seems to have been refining his communication as well to where it feels more player/climber centered. "we want to do ____" "If you're able to do this, you might find ____" "If you want to, do this may ___". So he leaves it more up to the climber and then tells him he believes in him. Yes, great climbing insight, but his communication was so good. It seems he's clearly been working on it.

I agree, this sounds a bit critical but I find this kind of coaching video a lot more informative than other more self-reflection-type videos of his! Not that those are bad, but this was superb.

MORE videos where Nathan gets instructed! Hannah, as a tall climber, let me tell you how frustrating it is to see 100,000 frikkin videos on "how to climb if you're short", but basically nonexistent content for taller climbers. You'll be tapping into a huge market. Us tall climbers do our fair share of suffering: sit starts and fitting in small boxes! CAPITALIZE ON THIS!

Emil is a flipping amazing coach. Really patient , encouraging and so knowledgeable. Watching nathan progess on the moves he struggled with at the start was awesome

I would 100% have walked away from those moves without Emil!

You're right about small wins. Most sessions I walk away having not topped a single new boulder that is close to my limit. But if I've overcome one move that scared me before or that I couldn't figure out that's a win. Its also a win if I tried something new, like I was trying crimpy slabs yesterday that I didn't think I would get anywhere on, but now realized I should be physically able to do, though I find them mentally a bit too scary. My toplogger grade might be static atm, but I'm still improving! And more importantly: I am having fun. Fear is the thing I struggle with most and if it wasn't there I could easily climb a lot of the 6A's in my gym and try hard on harder grades. Do you have any plans on making a video about fear and these mental barriers that can hold you back? Mostly get scared to commit because I don't want to hurt myself, even though the chance of that is pretty small. It's been half a year and I'm less scared than when I started, but it still gets me quite often. Especially as short climber, where a lot moves are a bit more reachy and dynamic for me. If you already have a video that could be useful for this please let me know! Your videos have been really helpful and a joy to watch.

Again, still very weird seeing Emil be “short”. Nathan is definitely much stronger than he thinks. Dialed that boulder down and at the end it looked so natural. Push him some more!

Hannah and Nathan, did Emil ever address Nathan‘s hip movement - or the potential lack of it - during that Session? I know he is aware of it, because he already talked in one of his videos about how important proper positioning is in dynamic climbing. Maybe it didn’t make it into the final cut, but I think it is a crucial point. Watching every try multiple times I noticed, that the best ones where always those, in which Nathan started his move by moving his hips forward and into the wall before moving up. On other occasions he seemed to just go straight up to the hold with little hip engagement, having a harder time to catch the hold. I really wonder, if Nathan could have gotten closer to doing the move, if they worked a little more on this, because it always looked like there was potential for improvement. It could have bought him more time to engage on the hold and to kill the momentum, maybe even press up a little on the right hand. Considering how close he was to sticking the move, this could have made all the difference. Anyways, I really enjoyed the video. Emil not being shy to at least try unconventional solutions is something everybody should adopt. „Might be like the best beta ever. You never know…“ So true!

I think what holds most people back in their training is actually committing to getting it done. So many people pull on and say "ahh its not my style, ahh its too this or too that" get the hell on it and dont stop till its done or you are. Climbing in particular suffers from this as most people start it as an "activity" instead of training. Get that gym mentality. Focus. Persevere. Things will happen.
