Although Assam and Darjeeling are the major tea growing places in India, you will be surprised to know that Palampur is referred to as the tea capital of northern India. It boasts of a rich tea heritage that dates back to the British era. Today Kangra tea is a prized beverage in the tea community nationally and internationally.
The best place to experience and discover more about this tea is 165 plus years old Wah Tea Estate that spreads over a whopping 500 acres. They offer daily tea tours that take visitors through the various stages of processing tea production right from the garden to the factory.
We got an opportunity to undertake such a tour with the dynamic scion of the owner family, Surya Prakash. What followed was a deep dive into the fascinating world of tea that most of us are completely unaware of. Surya's passion, warmth, enthusiasm and vast knowledge about the cash crop is absolutely impressive.
With utmost patient, calm and in depth manner, he enlightened us with the history and the steps of orthodox tea production which includes plucking, withering, rolling, oxidation, drying and sorting. Next he showed us the different grades of tea that is produced and then led us to the tasting room to introduce us to the nuances of various flavours.
Their major production is that of black tea or orthodox tea, green tea and white tea. Their premium range includes artisanal green tea and white tea. Furthermore, they also have a huge assortment of flavoured tea. The delicate vegetal note of the Kangra tea has a special place in our heart.
We are extremely thankful to Surya, Upasana and Kaveri at Wah Tea Estate for this memorable tea tour that broadened our perspective about this coveted commodity.

I run an experiential coffee house in Bangalore called Nerlu Cafe. Nerlu is the Kannada word for shade/shelter. We offer an elaborate coffee tasting menu, showcasing coffees from small to medium sized roasters, who are doing some exceptional work with coffee, and the cafe was created to tell their stories. For our non coffee drinking patrons, we also have a tea tasting menu, and so far we have only been picking teas from Darjeeling, Assam and the Nilgiris. We are offering teas in various degrees of oxidation, White, Green, Oolong, Muscatel, etc. This video was an eye opener for me. I knew of tea estates in Kangra valley, but it was a pleasure to see the attention Wah Estates brings to the tea making process. I'll definitely be buying some tea from them and putting them on our menu. This was a great watch, thanks for all the work you do!

Unexpectedly beautiful ! Minutest things like, the workers dont bend much to keep up their efficiency, the demonstration of the machines, the entire making process, distinction n variations, explanations n experiences shared during tea tasting... all of it. Infact, it took me back into student years, wen we wud study this theoretically... i wud rather say, a complete visual documentation which wud aid learning and help understand better.. Also, to share, ice cubes are frosted from lemon, tomatoes n tamarind, apart tea... Thank you for this, A lot more awaited.

This was a superb presentation! The clarity of the processing of Green, black and white and naming of the flushes made it so right on the spot, that I felt like I have just taken a class on tea making. Calling myself a tea lover and hunting the tea shops in Kolkata for Darjeeling have been an obsession with me. Now when I go to India and start my search for that elixir which is JUST right for me….will be a cup of Kangra tea! Look forward to more such presentations and perhaps tea pairing in the near future! Thank you for another beautiful show.

If I am not mistaken the Britishers brought tea into India at a small village in Upper Assam aptly named Chabua( Cha-bua). Yea gardens here make both the CTC and Orthodox types. Of course the CTC type is majorly produced here.

Abhinav, too much gyan about Tea making which was not necessary for ordinary people watching the video. Many Thanks to the owner who explained everything in detail. I felt it was not meant for ordinary viewership on your channel as it is of no interest for a common man than consuming the final product. you have simply wasted the time and energy of your viewers.
