Passing the instrument between people they should say "You have control" just like airline pilots . Maybe have a large velvet cushion beneath in case of disaster .

Is it a good violin ? I`ll take your word for it . Lots and lots of the usual chat. A tiny bit of rapid scratchy playing and a bit of clapping. They don`t talk over the clapping though .

See 2:34. Two observations. The large dark area between the fingerboard and the bridge and between the sound holes is a thick layer of dirt, rosin, and polish allowed to collect over the centuries. The black color is not the color of the varnish. The violin should be cleaned and retouched as needed. It looks awful! After all, they clean paintings, don't they? Also notice the cleaner area about a half inch above the bridge. This shows the earlier placement of the bridge before the neck was lengthened. Since this violin went directly from Paganini to the city of Genoa, the upper bridge placement was used by Paganini in order to compensate for the short string length resulting from the original short neck (compared to the long stop length marked by the notches in the sound holes). This made it possible for Paganini to play in high positions more comforably. The now longer neck (it was lengthened and raised almost a quarter inch in both directions) allows the original stop length to be used with comfort, and, no doubt, much better sound than in Paganini's day, especially considering the use of modern strings and bows.

I would have liked to first hear the violin with the gut strings that it already came with, and with a violinist who did not use the shoulder rest , and after that if they could make any modifications they wanted.

2:31 - always amazing to see (sadly, I think, the chin rest was lost to history). My only observation is ..did they touch up the varnish and colour staining on the front (by the fingerboard) at some point? Because, in pics from the 1950's I swear I saw more varnish removal there (from where he rested his fretting hand). If this was his main violin, it just seems lacking in the contact point wear marks you would expect from such a played-in instrument (the varnish/colour was generally very thin). The wear on the bottom bout (opposite side to the chin rest mark) is oddly interesting ..if its not all distorted by the videos lighting :) Darn, I shouldn't have studied at Luthiery college for three years. That was 25 years ago and its still with me ;-)

The Violinist deicided to use the strings she uses which are obligato strings.

Paganini played lots of different violins. I'm sure maybe he played that one but he was never "attached" to any one violin in particular. Luthiers would often give him violins to play to advertise thier work. Paganini would often play "lesser" violins to show off in front of his peers. To say he played it is one thing, but to say it's "Paganini's" violin seems stretchy.
