Emily Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights was first published in 1847 under the pen name Ellis Bell. It follows the Earnshaws and the Lintons, two landed aristocratic families residing on the West Yorkshire moors, and their tumultuous connections with Earnshaw's foster son, Heathcliff. Romanticism and Gothic fiction impacted the novel.
Although Wuthering Heights is now regarded as a masterpiece of English literature, it received mixed reviews at the time. It was divisive because of its portrayals of mental and physical cruelty, as well as its challenges to Victorian morality, religion, and communal ideals.
