Asking as a non-native speaker: how is the y in Mercury not a vowel? It certainly sounds and acts like one...

As a teacher of English to non-native speakers, I can tell you that it should be considered a vowel, as it functions as one. I can also tell you that one thing I have learned over years of teaching is this: English does not make sense.

@@TheBullhannigan but it's a consonant sound when it appears at the start of words. That's the critical difference.

@Mubashir_AK true. And 'u' is a consonant sound at the beginning of some words too. Ah the mysteries of English. They never end, and it keeps me in a job.
