Build on Success of Montreal Protocol’, Urges Secretary-General António Guterres, in Message for World Ozone Day observed on September 16. The stratospheric ozone layer protects life on Earth by absorbing ultraviolet light, which damages DNA in plants, insects and animals (including humans) and leads to reduced survival.
The Protocol’s Kigali Amendment - which focuses on phasing down hydrofluorocarbons - powerful climate-warming gases - which can contribute to advancing climate mitigation efforts, protecting people and planet.
Because ozone chemistry is very sensitive to temperature changes. Since temperatures in the Arctic stratosphere often come within a few degrees of the threshold for forming polar stratospheric clouds, further cooling of the stratosphere could cause these clouds to form more frequently and increase the severity of ozone losses.
With my Flowers & Butterflies series of art shows on exhibit at Havre de Grace Maritime Museum and Howland Cultural Center I would like to draw attention to the fact that a new study estimates that nearly half of the world’s known flowering plants and butterflies face a wide range of threats from ozone chemistry induced by climate change.
