The fact that LA BEAST has been bringing us quality content for years now (and my mans be active in the comments too) makes him one of my favorite content creators of all time. If there is ever a RU-vid HALL OF FAME, LA BEAST needs to be in it without question.
As a Swede i still have to give you props for your fair attempt. Hoffa had a great advantage on you and that's that most of us has been training unintensionally for this challenge since we were babies. Ive eaten them many times and they're the saltest we have, but it doesnt bother me that much either. Makes my cheeks squirm a little bit but thats about it. 5 minute run, it could be done if i could eat more than one at a time 😂. Anyway, it was impressive for someone not used to it.
@@Redlights111 when did you eat them? The reason I ask is because they took away alot of the salt on them around 10 years ago and I can't remember exactly how salty they were anymore. Is it today's Djungelvrål, they are light years apart in saltness. Me personally doesn't think they are salty at all anymore. The earlier ones were alot closer to these, but still very far away from eachother.

As a swede it's fascinating how other cultures react to these kinds of foods, we have a history of using salt as a preservative since way back and nowadays it's just a part of our culture and what we are used to. When I visited the U.S. I was baffled how sweet everything was, Mountain Dew contains around 1,5-2x sugar than any soda I've ever had in Sweden. Also peanut butter... peanut butter everywhere!
A valiant effort if one hates the strong flavours and the burning sensation of Salmiakki. Those were VERY well coated in ammonium chloride powder, which would be just too much for a first timer. You want to get your feet wet with some Venco Dubbelzout or some Fazer pastilles, then work your way up until you eventually are unfazed by even the most caked in “salt” pieces. This is just an evening snack for me. Makes my mouth water just seeing those crystals. I _love_ Salmiakki / Drop / Salty Licorice... which are just different dialects and names for the same thing... that thing being: Black Licorice pastille candies - coated by, doused in, or infused with - Ammonium Chloride, a very strong tasting, almost burning but in a good way, chemical which, contrary to the “salt” in the name, is not actual table salt - which is Sodium Chloride - but Ammonium Chloride. Ammonium Chloride is a good expectorant (helps you clear out your lungs and throat of phlegm) and so to get children to eat it, it was added to the sweetest candy they had at the time in Northern Europe - Licorice - and thus Salmiakki was born... first as a medicine. But a bit like Halls Cough Drops today, people liked that taste and strange mouth sensation of the preparation and began to eat it for its own sake as candy just because it tasted good. If the company eventually tried to get rid of the Ammonium Chloride and just sell candy licorice, there would be uproar amongst brand loyal fans and the company would go under unless it brought back the “salt.”
I just love that the music in his videos during these challenges never changes and makes you feel so calm while watching someone throwing up and crying in pain while making faces I didn't think was possible.

Salmiak is one of my fav candies. It’s not regular table salt on those, it’s ammonium chloride. This provides a much different flavour to sodium chloride (table salt), and I guess it can burn up your mouth some too with its higher pH. Thanks for the video Beast! Great entertainment 🖤

It's fine, there's actually no sodium in that salt. It's ammonium chloride, not sodium chloride. It CAN cause high blood pressure if you're eating it all the time, worst he'll probably get is the shits.
Just as a heads up to anyone, the salt used on salmiak is not sodium chloride. It's a salt called ammonium chloride, and it has a different taste and it's very aquired but absolutely amazing
I'm swedish and those candies are some of the best liquorice i've ever eaten. If you actually want to enjoy them then eat a small bite of them at a time, otherwise it's wayyy too much salt at once. Probably very few people can eat the entire jar in under 5 minutes

Thank God he didn't eat them all. People have died eating an entire bag of black licorice jelly beans. The Food and Drug Administration is reminding everyone this Halloween that while safe in small amounts, black licorice does in fact have things in it that can make you sick or kill you. The candy contains the compound glycyrrhizin, FDA experts say, which is the sweet flavoring that comes from the licorice root. Combine this with the copious amounts of sodium and you're seriously asking for an ICU stay. I really wish he would research the things he eats or attempts to eat in large amounts. Chubbyemu is a great resource for exactly this issue. The one on nutmeg and soy sauce come to mind.
@@Wutzmename Most mass produced/commercially available licorice is perfectly safe to each in large quantities (aside from eating a lot of candy in general). Black licorice from specialty shops or "organic" true licorice can indeed be dangerous in large quantities.

Should you eat smelling salt though. Was this a candy from tradition that people have grown to love. Very curious. I had. A friend in elementary who ate something not as salty. But never had I had salty licorice in my life and she loved them. She also like to eat spoonfuls of table sugar. So I thought maybe the sense of taste was dulled over time from excessive salt. Very interesting what others love and how it comes about.
@@sabinfigaro7334 smelling salts has ammonium carbonate in it. You add water to the salt and it reacts with the water to form ammonia gas which makes it smell. It also has alcohol in it as well. Ammonium chloride is not smelling salt but it forms a weakly acidic solution in water and it probably explains why it’s sour.
L.A. Beast is the only constant we have had on youtube, he even uses the same music while doing the challenge, been here for years and years and can never see myself leaving, love you skips.
Update: so I just tried these, and while they are salty as hell (and WILL hurt your mouth / tongue if you eat a lot of them) the taste itself was not bad at all. I think this might be a testament to cultural differences when it comes to cuisine. I grew up eating Salmiakki so I really enjoyed it.

@bree walden; womanizer It’s good to note that while this licorice is very salty in flavour, it does not contain ordinary table salt. Instead it’s ammonium chloride. Think of it as sweetener but for salt. The salty taste without the salt. I assume if this was actual salt, eating a few of these would be down right dangerous
