In 2001, finishing up a roof. I was running back forth on walk board chalking line for cap when button on roofjack busted off,I was on a 3 STORY with attic space, roof was 12on. Needless to say it f%#&#/ me up. Moral, always check equipment periodically. That lock button had rusted thru. A little wisdom for an old disabled contractor to pass on. How do you separate the shingles with one hand when it’s hot and they stick together? I find it hard with both hands lol
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 5 лет назад
Do you flap the bundle like a deck of cards when you open it? You can see in my other videos I do that. But yea when its hot out sometimes that doesn't even work work perfectly, most times though it will give you a little bit of room though to get your fingers in between them and you will have to lift fast in a shocking motion. You can't baby them even the slightest bit, and then the far ends can still be stuck often. So you can lift straight up and it will peel or even put your foot on the bottom shingle and give it another little shocker pull (kind of like the same motion you would use if your hose is caught on something send you wanna whip it free) lol hope that helped

Jeez dude, you said yourself that the staggers were too close. You have to cut one side or the other. Instead of starting in the valley, do the roof the correct way, and start on the gable with pre cut books. It doesn't take too long to hook a valley, and do it right.

@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 5 лет назад
first off, its not 8 inch. second, this is fine. I do 8 inch because its easier to continue my stagger around pipes and chimneys or w.e is in the way..but this naturally fell this way out of the valley on a 180 sq job so I wasn't about to cut 6 valleys every shingle when the stagger is juuuuuuuust under 6 inches. the camera is deceiving. . I was careful about where I put my nails (closer to the ends) and this is definitely the closest I would ever let slide. but at the end of the day its my name on it. the manufacturer won't honor this in 10 years anyway.

Where did u learn too estimate god damn thats alot of bundles lol and why not where a pouch u laid shingles for over 7 mins and no hammer was in sight what happens when you get a high nail, my other question is why 5 nails they sell that product in canada and it requires 6 too 7 nails per shingle, you do not have too be the fastest roofer in the world who cares its about the quality im 30 and have been in buissness since i was 21 good luck with the roofing this year

@leighwhite9656 5 лет назад
@@NWIVeteranConstruction its because you used a california valley which is under exposed, each shingle that connects too the vallu is connected too your shingle that is on your chaulk line then when you connect there is always a triangle that isnt covered, we dont do these valleys here why? Because they fail , closed cut all the way
@NWIVeteranConstruction
@NWIVeteranConstruction 5 лет назад
@@leighwhite9656LOTS TO COVER lol I was given blue prints ONLY a year in advance. and did the math correctly. Shingles have 20 to 22 shingles per bundle. On your average roof (under 30 sq) that doesn't affect your shingle count. I was told by my supplier that I will most likely run short because the job is 180 square and the difference will start to add up. We're very experienced and scrap efficient so they were wrong. Oh well. Moving on. This area in north west indiana only requires 4 nails. I put 5 nails on anything 4/12 to roughly 16/12 and 6 nails on anything A frame or mansard per manufacturer details you can Google. Also mansard pitches require 4 dabs of roofing cement in addition to 6 nails. As far as no pouch goes, I don't need one. I use the bostich gun because the nails ALWAYS shoot perfect. My motto is that if you it looks like it should be hit, hit it. You'll see once in a great while I'll use my gun to smash it down but there's no need for a pouch n hammer. I put coils right where I need them (usually just take one step to grab it) and keep my knife in my pocket.... hammer near by for freak accidents but I usually only grab it once or twice if I shingle for a full day. Been doing this a long time and also do a one year post completion inspection (good selling point) and nothing ever is wrong. A lot of my shinglers don't wear pouches anymore either, the fast ones anyway. Because it helps with longevity, it won't hurt your back as bad, it allows you to stand longer. And when you mix in my strategy for opening and spreading bundles of moving a quick step for your coils it also Allows your back a quick good stretch.
@ronaldwalters4715
@ronaldwalters4715 5 лет назад
by the way bro nailing is a company preference not a standard as long as you atleast have four nails in a shingle it doesnt matter if you add a few more into it just dont go over 6.
@travisedwards9983
@travisedwards9983 5 лет назад
Nailing is by manufacture specifications and also local code no "preference" , going below either voids warranty. Also some shingles require 7 nails like cert class 4 shingles
@Josh-ww5kz
@Josh-ww5kz 3 года назад
There isn't a rule of how you can go over 6 nails. I usually 6 nail and if I'm installing and I misplace a nail and its above the common bond area, I just slap another nail next to it landing in the common bond area. So that would make it 7. I wouldnt rip that shingle out just because of that.

As far as the pride comment, again these kids need something to be proud of! Plenty of work for you in Montana, if you can handle the winter! JK. I’m sure your as tough as they come! Thanks for your service! New sub 4u! To the critics and haters, He’s not the worlds fastest roofer and he knows it! Not the point you mental midgets! He’s fast like a cat on a hot tin roof! Clever, tactical, and I’m sure if he left a roof the hard way he’d most likely roll off a shoulder or land on his feet and be back to his gun before you guys could figure out what the hell just happened!!!🤔 I know I could keep pace with him or better because I run my jobs on the same “efficient” theory but again that’s not the point. There is a large gap between knowing how to roof or build vs actual quality work. Some of his practices may seem unorthodox but trust me he has his poop in a group and the quality shows! Do you? Quit with the bashing! It lacks merit! Get your head out of the phone and lay an extra square, stand those last two walls, get the first concrete truck at 5:00 am and finish that slab till 2:00 am! Maybe then your criticism will have some value! Until then, get back to work, you got a break when you got this job!

Angle made with too short of steps. Needs be at least 6”. Nail placement good but not even close to the fastest. Lol. Roof would be quality roof if not for those 4” steps

I wasn't excited about the stair steps either but they came out of the valley like that and I want about to cut every one of those. I let it slide and made sure my first nail was perfect every time so water can't get to it. Also. It'll never get to that seam either. We're all good

You cut to length when coming out of valley. Steps should never be that short. Rest looks good tho

You are in denial . How are you helping people by doing every thing wrong. How am i making things up when you are showing every body on video. How could I enjoy anything about this when it all BS. I was laying shingles before you were born. You should get a gun that you can control the depth of the nails or turn down the pressure.Those nails don't hold much when they re shot halfway through the shingles.You are no where near the worlds fastest roofer.Iv'e seen Mexicans nail them faster than that with a hatchet. Most people don't want gun nailed shingles and you are the reason.

@@jerryriggan they do have depth control! Stop talking about shit you don't understand. You are making shit up. I am doing it right. I explained to you that what your talking about is wrong. You're in denial not me. I take real advice and become better from it. You have nothing to offer me. You missed a lot of other shit I could've mentioned. Your jealous of a young guy like me getting all the glory and helping people because you know you never helped anybody. You haven't impacted any lives positively so Gfy. No nail guns, if you don’t have the time to nail em by hand you shouldn’t be doing it at all. Seen so many nails blow through shingles and come loose, go with the pros and nail on some slate.

All pros use nail guns, if your running a crew putting on asphalt shingles by hand then your working out of the back of a truck. Teach your guys how to use a gun, not that difficult. Yes slate you will do by hand for obvious reasons, plus are copper nails.

Sure he is the fastest. But do you want speed or quality. This is the typical house in a development. These guys are working for the builder and not the homeowner. They couldn't give a rats ass about quality. There working piece work. Where is his hammer? The nail gun doesn't set every nail. Sometimes you have to set one with your hammer. The poor people that buy a house in a brand new development. They think there buying something with no problems. Their Junk. Your better off buying and older house and fixing it up as you go.
