Please visit passlabs.com or call 530.878.5350. At Pass Labs our team has one goal: to create audio products that invite you to listen to music.
Amplifiers: passlabs.com/p...
Preamplifiers: passlabs.com/p...
Speakers: passlabs.com/p...
All about us: passlabs.com/c...
Contact us: passlabs.com/c...
We want you to enjoy the experience so much that you go through your entire music collection - again, again and again.... each time a joyous discovery of something new. We want music lovers for the long haul.
To reach that goal, we continually strive to design amplifiers that deliver great sound, measure well and are reliable. This is achieved through ongoing R&D, and lots and lots of listening. Oscilloscopes and distortion analyzers are excellent tools, but they historically make lousy customers. Our real customers care most about the experience they get when they sit down to listen to their music.

Hi, Im from Montreal, Canada, a country that produces some of the best audio products out there. I have to say if I am not mistaken these Wilson Audio speakers run for $650,000+/-/pair. I have worked in the audio business and I have to say that sometimes designs (looks) are way to overdone that that is where 1/3 of price tags suck you dry. However the experience of just demoing these at showrooms is an orgasm in its own way. That goes for all other audio components as well. The Pass amps look like beauties but without the blue lights they would look like a triple cross path with the looks of Krell and Conrad Johnsons. Sweeeet.

One thing I notice about all these ultra expensive "statement" systems is how remarkably different they sound from each other. This tells me they that they are no where close to accurate sounding. For if they were they would converge and begin to sound very much alike. The fact that they don't indicates they are no where near as good as their makers and owners claim.
@TooCynical

I have a vintage 1970 Radio Shack Realistic 40 watt power booster equalizer that would clean each & every one of those systems up. I would gladly bring it over & hook it to a car battery or 12V power supply & put my money where my mouth is & embarrass these guys! The sound would be crystal clear, including the clicks & pops of the vinyl on those fancy phonographs, guaranteed! LMAO!!! Of course I could use my minidisc player for source material.
@mikemadden2729
@mikemadden2729 5 лет назад
It would also clean up the sound of the room & whatever speakers they threw at me. I know all speakers sound different because I took a pink noise generator & an analyzer along when went speaker shopping. They're all goofy!!! No matter how expensive! If you get speakers, don't forget to get an equalizer, too. Otherwise bend over & get out the Vaseline, HAHAHA!!! The 'audio salon' owner gave me The Evil Eye when I hauled out the pink noise generator & analyzer! ROF, laughing tears!
@ryankowalski3670
@ryankowalski3670 Год назад
its mostly because the recording equipment used is nowhere close to the fidelity of the actual system. thats what you're really hearing. that being said i have heard very expensive systems sound like shit for sure.

As a recovering audiophile, I came to the realization that music is produced in studios using equipment quite different from the audiophile approved list. I prefer to get closer to what the artist intended rather than a gee-wiz system that departs significantly from that.
@uvafan940
@uvafan940 6 лет назад
Loudspeakers have to reproduce every tiny sound from every instrument and voice all at once (and be as accurate as possible while doing so). And Studios usually use high end loudspeakers to master. Abbey uses B&W Diamond speakers, and I am sure all other recording studios have their own preference on speakers. Though the price of Wilson speakers is quite insane, even for a Bill Gates.
@guitarfoundry
@guitarfoundry 6 лет назад
but you have no way of knowing what the artist intended. Also the artist is usually not the sound engineer, nor the producer or the mixing engineer, or the mastering engineer...
@paleolifer99
@paleolifer99 6 лет назад
the equipment that studios use varies dramatically. Butch Vig has done in depth videos on his process and it's quite clear that the monitors used are not very high end. I consider myself an audiophile but no where near this guy, and I can tell you from my years playing in bands that my home speakers are orders of magnitude better than the monitors that most studios use to mix and master tracks.
@jorgmichaelpalm40
@jorgmichaelpalm40 5 лет назад
Studios use for example Yamaha N10, but these you might not know ;-) Ok on website you can see that they use them in every room. These are THE standard, not Hifi Speakers like B&W. But if the company sponsors them.. why not? ;-) Or do you think the Abbey paid for these B&W? For sure not! Its just marketing.

don't look in someone else's wallet. As someone who shares your passion for music and other stuff, that’s the best advice I can give you. The energy you spend on studying someone else’s wealth and, perhaps, jealousy, you spend on your own progress and building your own wealth. Be positive and excellent at what you do, rejoice in others ’successes, and invoke your own success. It is the only path to success and a recipe for wealth. If it worked in my case, it will work in yours. Remember, positive thinking ....

I hear good tonal balance with no strain; no overemphasized frequencies with smoothness, but no lack of detail -- i.e. the first sibilance on this album being played on other systems at the shows seemed to play a little hot with that ear-pick quality that I do not hear in this system . . . and although Vanessa does put a little more emphasis on that first “S”, it isn't overly emphasized. The sound has good separation of the vocalist from the instruments, and there appears on RU-vid to have no smearing of one sound into another. Nice system if one can afford it; however, it is nice to know it does exist, even if only for those fortunate few. Nice review.

+russmaleartist How do you listen to to this youtube clip to accurately differentiate the diffrences the quality in sound on different systems?
@AVshowreports
@AVshowreports 9 лет назад
+Makkaka Kugelsnibb Here's how: 1) by streaming it to your system, or 2) use high quality headphones, 3) set the youtube video to play back at 1080p (the little gear adjusts this). Never watch any video on your computer speakers. After you have done this, then just watch a lot of videos and the sound differences will be very apparent.
@russmaleartist
@russmaleartist 9 лет назад
Makkaka Kugelsnibb Actually even RU-vid's quality is quality enough to still show differences. Experience and good ears still can manage to differentiate audible sign points that differentiate the best from the mediocre.

I love infallible people, who have all the answers and can set the rest of us fallible people on the right trail -- where would we be without perfect people? Sir, I only have about 65 years of record collecting and listening under my belt . . . but what do I know -- especially against a perfectly opinionated person, who is so much more experienced and without any imperfections or fallibility? Thank you so much! So much for voicing an opinion. Compression or not . . . as all the different products go through the same process, there is still a level of sonic difference heard between examples . . . but perhaps you have destroyed your hearing by listening to the likes of heavy metal . . . but thank you just the same for your infallible expertise! If I am not incorrect . . . there is a lot of compression to CDs, but they still sound good to many . . . except for those who are infallible, that is. Shows how deceived I really am . . . I just recently turned 69 years old, and I thought that infallibility came with the territory -- but perhaps in another ten years (if I am fortunately to live that long), I might rightfully also achieve and share your title: “infallible” and stoop down to your level. By the way, if the videos have no listening value . . . what are you doing listening to them? I bet you buy books for the pictures too. Volt Lover

It's all about a great source more than speakers, I have large Altec A-7's Model 19" and some custom built Altec based speakers, all super clean and clear. I have learned by listening to all these video's thru different systems I have it all comes down too the recording equipment they use for their video's and more than that the source material. What the studio did when mixing the music has everything to do with the sound. 250,000 dollar speakers will still sound like Walmart specials if the source music is mixed like crap.

TheNewGranada ace guitars, but to really improve the sound of the audio system Rockitman should replace them with archtops. It's common knowledge that a pair of Gibson Super 400 CES angled at 37° to the Wilson speakers dramatically improve the soundstage and "danceability" of digital sources. In my tests a pair of ES-175 or even Gretsch Country Gentleman utterly transform the sound of analog reel-to-reel, but other audiophiles vehemently disagree.

There's a (big) chance the all DHT phono stage with nickel core iron gave those Wilsons some needed 'soul'. I mean relatively speaking, since most Wilson based systems I've seen and heard are quite 'mainstream' in design choices starting from the upstream, which can give off a cold tonailty if you are not careful. Just my humble opinion and YMMV.

I had Audio Research equalizers & had & still have Audio Control equalizers. Very good, with paired sliders instead of left over here & right over there. I also have an Audio Research realtime spectrum analyzer & pink noise generator. This equipment showed me that if you have speakers, you need equalizers GUARANTEED!!!
@andershammer9307
@andershammer9307 5 лет назад
As far as I know Audio Research never made any type of equalizer or analyzer as they make High-End preamps and power amps and they don't believe in equalizers.
@mikemadden2729
@mikemadden2729 5 лет назад
I have them. They're Audio SOURCE. The analyzer is handheld with a mic on top & a LED display & it & the equalizer are both black with the logo in front. The EQ has paired sliders & they are from the late '70s or early '80s (I think). My Audio Control equalizers (I had 3 or 4, got 2 now) are made in Lynnwood, Washington, believe it or not! The Audio Source stuff was more expensive than the Audio Control. I have 2 1970 Realistic 40 watt power boosters with massive heat sinks (& they get HOT!), thick steel top & bottom panels, & smooth, solid sliders that'll run 2 sets of speakers & blow the doors off a car. I bet the things are 40 watts RMS per channel, not 40 peak total! Their construction is as good or better than the AS & AC stuff! Anyone who got one got heavy duty audiophile quality equipment by an act of God! I don't know who the hell made them (or on what planet), but they were only around a couple years before being replaced by a lighter, cheaper version (what you'd expect for this type of device, 40 watts peak to peak, LMAO), without the heat sinks. Both were $40 back in the day. Actually mine is made in Korea & the inferior one in Taiwan. Now I'm confusing Audio Research & Acoustic Research & Audio Source & Audio Control in my stoopit brain!!!
@mikemadden2729
@mikemadden2729 5 лет назад
A friend had a 4 channel 'Gembox' (really) booster, the size of a pack of cigarettes or a deck of cards, rated at (better sit down) "100+100+100+100 watts PEAK TO PEAK", no shit! No heat sinks either! How's THAT for bullshit, HAHAHA!!!

come july, 2018 cd's will no longer be sold at best buy. Vinyl is alive & well but if we just put our best effort & technology into superior digital recording & playback , we could fit all his collections on 4 8GB hard drives, instantly available. His collections - heavy weight, harder to catalog, difficult to find a specific song or artist, & the expense of it all. A vinyl record here in NJ costs usually $25 new or perhaps $4 in one of only 2 remaining stores to buy used vinyl. Perhaps its all relative, since in 1950 most people got their music live or on radio. Very few of us can afford live music tickets these days and spotify, sirius, imusic, have replaced radio. Wonder what this dudes children would think of his situation in 10 years- - my 20 something son & all his friends think music listening demds only a phone with itunes or spotify extreme and perhaps, at best, a computer with at most, a $500 dollar subwoover & surround speakers.

Or in a collection of classic cars...... hang around the Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale every January and you'll talk to guys with a car collection that makes this stereo system look like a $40 Panasonic boom box at Walmart. If you have the money and the passion, might as well live it up to whatever makes you happy because you only have one life.

great system but too much for the claustrophobic room..also the chosen track was very monotonous..it was literally just a couple of chords over and over and over...tedious

come july, 2018 cd's will no longer be sold at best buy.

The ceiling is too low and the speakers are too large for the room.

Well.... you're assuming. Have you been there? probably would sound better than almost any other setup. Sure, it may sound better in another room, but that is always the case. Setups can always sound better, but that doesn't mean it sounds damn amazing

Fixing that's what Radio Shack Realistic equalizers are for. They work really well. You can get one at a garage sale for $10 or $20, maybe even a Sony or a Pioneer, LMAO!

I'd love to see some blind testing of this stuff. I bet half the people babbling on about their kit wouldn't know the difference in sound from some reasonable stuff you bought in a department store. Snake oil and mumbo jumbo. Somehow i find it enjoyable to watch though.

I imagine the tapes that sound good are those new $450 copies of master tapes. I have a lot of RCA living stereo original tapes and Mercury living presence and while they sound great the LP's are still better. I own 21 different reel to reel machines including the best Tandberg.

I wonder how many super tiny ssd cards it would take to replace this how room, you definitely could replace the room with a small box, I would Imagine newer recordings will be mastered digital with no data loss.

I detect sybilance in the system. I am not sure if it's from the original source or from the system itself. Well I sure hope it's the source...

I'm stuck in a nursing home for a while, forced to use a $60 Chinese 'boombox' with 4 inch speakers. I'm using 2 equalizers in series to get sound like one of those Star Wars stereos. About 2 dBs of it, LMAO!!! I don't see any equalizers here. What do you do about the crummy recordings on those fancy phonographs? Crummy recordings always ruined the sound of my audio systems. I hated those engineers. I'd love to come over & show you how to get your money's worth with my $50 used equalizers (or my old vintage 1970 Radio Shack Realistic)!

So....if you play the Grateful Dead through this killer system, do they sound like they're singing in tune? Please don't get overly triggered. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Dead and their approach, but I'm certainly not a fanatic. I have a number of their recordings and saw them a few times way back when in the early 70s. But the objective truth remains; the intonation of their vocals (especially in the live recordings) was usually less than perfect and sometimes just horribly out of tune.

No doubt this is one of the better "hi-fi" sounding playback systems. If you're into "hi-fi" sound. But in hi-end audio, guys like Rockitman are actually admired. Sad.
