New Brunswick is famous for many things -- the world's highest tides, delicious seafood, Acadian culture and super friendly people, just to name a few but it also boasts another BIG attribute that attracts many shutter happy tourists to the province -- The World's Largest Lobster!
No joke, the planet's largest crustacean sits happily at the entrance to the town smiling it's lobstery smile for all admirers that travel from around Canada and the world to enjoy (about 500,000 people per year, to be exact!). If you were going to try to cook this humongous lobster you'd need a pot the size of an apartment building and you could feed everyone you've ever met because at 35 feet long, 16 feet high and weighing in at 50 tones of reinforced concrete and steel... it's one incredibly huge lobster!
It's what Shediac, New Brunswick is most famous for as they have earned the moniker 'Lobster Capitol of the World'.
Not only did we get to see the lobster, but we also had the pleasure of meeting the mayor. A gregarious man he welcomed us with a big 'bonjour' and a bag of little treats from his town. He gave us a history of the lobster and explained the finer points of his town and province. He is very proud of Shediac.
This gorgeous little Acadian town has a distinct Mi'kmaq and French culture and many natural attributes, like the beautiful Parlee Beach Provincial Park, which is jammed with visitors in the summer.
