World's largest rodent lives in South Texas
Melanie Typaldos says she wasn't looking to get an exotic pet.
But when her daughter held a baby capybara on vacation, everything changed. Typaldos says her capybara has now taken over her life.
A capybara is considered the world's largest rodent. They can weigh up to 140 pounds which is even more impressive considering their diet consists mainly of grass and fruit. Like all rodents, their teeth never stop growing. Capybaras can be quite aggressive and will bite sharply when threatened.
Typaldos got her capybara when he was only 11 days old. She found him from a breeder in east Texas. Most people in the U.S. who have capybaras keep them outside similar to sheep or goats. But Typaldos keeps her capybara as a domestic, indoor pet. He even sleeps in the bed with her.
Typaldos named him Caplin Rous. She says Rous stands Rodents of Unusual Size.followers on twitter, pet on twitter
Typaldos writes a popular blog about Caplin. She also has a Facebook page for him. And Caplin has more than 2,700 followers on Twitter. When asked why she does all of that, Typaldos says its because the information out there about capybaras is too limited. She wants to teach people as much as she can about them.
