Poor Bette…that lovely accent, that beautifully coifed hair, salon perfect make-up and a very kind heart…..Probably a mentor and idol to manny of us who fly. Flying is an exhausting career and tbh I admire western airlines for keeping seniors who want to continue on payroll. What she described (weight management etc) still happens in many Asian airlines and I’m glad that there’s another world (the west) that hold different values. RIP Betty

When I started with United in 1970 we had to sign a paper we would quit at 33. That listed a year. I worked for years but not that long! Glad she feels good enough. I quit to be a nurse.

She started with Eastern, moved to their Shuttle operations and that is what has lead her via Trump, USAir/USAirways to American. Other Eastern employees were not as fortunate.

We had some eastern airlines furloughed from AA yrs ago. America West Airlines hired a few ex eastern..very senior flight attendants!!

She talked about they had to be a certain weight back in the day . Well , those days are long gone . I have seen some REALLY FLUFFY flight attendants!! Excuse me. She had to requalify every year. You're an ageist. I'm a flight attendant and I can tell you without a doubt older FAs are every bit as good if not better than younger ones.

Easy. She had to test and prove her knowledge of the job and physical abilities every single year in order to retain her wings and FAA certifications, just like every other flight attendant!! They didn't just give them to her....she had to EARN them EVERY YEAR!! Not everyone could, but Bette did, right to the end! THAT is why we are celebrating her life and legacy!!!
