Im from Belgium and fun fact: while corona was like the first wave when stores in Belgium had to be closed, stores in the Netherlands could stay open, so you had some stores that couldn’t use the whole store😂 they literally like closed half of the store *edit, Thanks everyone for liking this comment 😁 Bedankt iedereen
@@Me-xo5tw I assume manufacturing stays the same, and they haven't updated the powerlines country-wide, as that is a massive project and would cost a lot of money
Jack: you read “intentional neglect” as “international neglect”. The Czech Republic solved the Tree infestation by letting it spread and run rampant until it died out, whereas Germany managed to stop the spread when it first happened
I used to volunteer to clean up the forsets in “Brdy” (if any one is czech here) and I must say that there was not international neglect but national neglect
1:54 Spain and Portugal are both in the Schengen area, which is an agreement consisting of most countries in Europe where there are no border patrol points and you can just waltz about in to another country
On the Sweden Norway Bridge border: During the start of the pandemic Norway closed its borders to Sweden and even when the restrictions were eased you would still have to quarantine. However in April of 2020 a photo went viral in Norway of a pair of 71 year old twin brothers sitting on either side of the border on that exact bridge drinking coffee and having a chat. The twins, Ola and Pontus, are originally from Sweden but Ola has been living in Norway since 1983. They are best friends and couldn't stand not seeing each other so they agreed to meet at this bridge; gamle Svinesundsbroa. Neither twin lived far from the bridge so they would meet on it every Saturday at 11, maintaining 2 meters of distance and with strict orders from the soldiers patrolling the border of not hugging each other. They brought food and chairs and would sit there and talk for a few hours no matter the weather, on their birthdays they brought presents but were not allowed to exchange them so it was purely symbolic. They kept this up for 18 months until finally Ola could walk across the border to hug his brother Pontus without having to quarantine or get tested. They then drove and got pancakes. I just think it is a very wholesome story about this bridge and the border and hope whomever took the time to read it thinks so too
Since you're wondering why the sands on the Israel-Egypt border are so different, here's something from NASA that explains it: "The different colors of the land surface are the result of trampling by humans and their livestock. Trampling disturbs the dark-colored soil crusts on the Egyptian side of the border, allowing lighter-colored dune sand beneath the crusts to be exposed by winds" Another thing about that border is you can also see exactly where the borders of Gaza are
"For some reason" if you're wondering why Baarle is so divided: Basically it is the result of a number of medieval treaties, agreements, land-swaps and sales between the Lords of Breda and the Dukes of Brabant. The story goes that in 1198, Henry I the Duke of Brabant gave over some marshland (Baarle was all marshland in the 12th century) to Godfried of Schoten, the Lord of Breda. Henry kept the lands that were paying him a rent. The area that Henry kept is now Belgian. The area that he gave to Godfried...is now Dutch. And the rest is history
You don't need a passport or border checks to go from Spain to Portugal. Also interesting: that zip line goes through a time zone border too so you can zip line into the past.
Definitely not how it works; you are born with either a Dutch or Belgium passport depending on your parent's nationality. When you change the front door you just change what country you pay taxes to, nothing else.
Hi jack I think you should learn all the capital cities of each country. Or the official language or there leader. Love from me to you, Becky, Kai, and your dogs 🐶 I hope you have a great day and keep up the good work
I’m from Australia and I remember learning that different countries can be on the same chunk of land and my mind had a mini explosion (I was like 5, but I do have a distinct memory of learning it one day)
Ecologist here: intentional neglect of bark beetle infestation is not bad! It's a natural disturbance of the climax forest, which is mostly made of monocultures here in Czech republic (after previous bad decisions in history). This is kinda good.
That first one with the volleyball match was taken in 2007 during the last time they did it. Volleyball was a tradition of the two Nacos from 1979 to 2007. It all ceased in 2007 when the fence between them got taller (understandably so). After that match the two communities held hands to show while they may be divided by a fence, they will forever be ONE Naco
In the Netherlands near a place called 'Vaals' we also have those borders. Its called the 'Drielandenpunt'. Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands meet there. It's a really cool place, you can go for a hike there and stand in all countries at once!
5:12 Yea.. high pressure natrum lamps last forever. And its no only that. They have a special fitting, so if one lamp break, is far easier to just replace it with a identical and new one than removing the full housing
What's wrong with our country being dark? It's called saving electricity, and more people should be doing it as their part to make a difference In regards to Haiti, Haiti's environmental problems also has to do with France. When France colonized Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), they destroyed the soil by aggressively harvesting the same crops over and over again. Over the course of fifty years, a quarter of the colony was all coffee with the original forests cleared. They were also forced to export timber as part of paying off 90 million francs as compensation to France. This left a lasting impact
@@cosmixstar We very much do have electricity. It's both saving electricity and money because of tough sanctions. Perhaps don't get your info from biased pro-war hawk USA Western media and don't question our statistics.
The boring Canada and Us one I’m reminded me of the closest border to Canada which actually looks kinda cool it’s called the peace bridge which goes straight through and their divided by some water
There is a hilarious one on a island between Finland and Sweden called "Märket", the border is basically a zigzag pattern because one of the countries built a lighthouse on the other side
It was Finland that built the lighthouse years before Sweden claimed half the island, but the Finnish lighthouse was on Sweden's side so the border was zigzagged so Finland got to keep the lighthouse and both got to keep a equal amount of land
Border between The Netherlands and Belgium actually goes through the store of a lady who makes incredible paintings, me and my mom know her really well and shes very sweet + is known by various dutch/belgian stars
Jack, thanks for being so inspirational. Because of your videos, I learned all the countries of the world and recently won my school geography bee and have a chance to go to nationals. So, thank you so so much!!
The zip line from Spain to Portugal is great fun. No passport needed of course, and you also cross a time zone for added benefit. Would happily do it again!
We call the meeting point of the boarders between Sweden, Finland and Norway Treriksröset, Treriksrøysa or Kolmen valtakunnan rajapyykki. It's pretty cool tbh!
05:16 the reason you can still see the difference is because East berlin switched to electric lights before west berlin so when west berlin did eventually switch from candle to electric they chose orange because is was the same colour as the candles.
3:15 so happy that you aren't shaming anyone an in this part not the czechs. If I'm not wrong this was taken in our national park, where it's illegal to cut trees. We let nature take it's course and aldough it didn't really work out, at least we didn't cut the trees down.
Genuine question. If you were to move your front door from Belgium to the Netherlands would you need to apply for citizenship? Also if your front door is in Belgium would that mean that you can't work anyways in Netherlands?
3:31 To be honest, I have found as well the opposite situation. The road in Portugal were good but once we cross the border the road was pretty bad, so the conclusion we made is the treatment to roads is not about money and budget but a political issue
The Canada and USA border is actually very interesting. They cut a line in the forest along the straight part of the border on the 49th parallel and it is called the no-touching zone. There are also several places that you can freely walk across the border, as long as you return after you're done, like the Peace Arch or the International Peace Garden. There are 2 American towns that are separated from the USA by lakes and the Canadian border, the towns of Point Roberts and Angle Inlet. Wasn't always so friendly though, took quite a while for the British and Americans to decide on where the border should go and there were quite a few disputes.
Im from Argentina and the triple frontier between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay also has one of the most MASSIVE waterfalls in the world, the Iguazu falls, a beautiful and incredible place!
There's an interesting border between Belgium and Germany near Roetgen, there is a very thin line running through Germany that's part of Belgium due to a railroad
0:42 It's actually even crazier than it looks. It's literally two different towns smashed into one place: the Dutch Baarle-Nassau vs. the Belgian Baarle-Hertog
This remind me of an episode of Phineas and Ferb, where Doofensmirz is on a train exactly on the USA-Canada border, so Perry can only negally attack him on the USA half and there is a Canadian special agent for the Canada half. The seats were read an blue too
The Hadrian's Wall one isn't actually a border anymore, it used to separate England and Scotland when the Romans were here but now the border is a bit further north.
I was in Israel for 14 days a while ago, and I can now tell you that the difference in collar between Egypt and Israel is because Israel is doing completely reusable water
The borders of Sweden, Norway and Finland are right in the middle of a lake, but they set up a bridge connected to a cairn so the three countries can meet.
The border between Spain and Portugal is really cool because as well as the zipwire, the border is actually just a river. I was in Portugal and my dad and I went over to have lunch in Spain for the day and then zipwired back to Portugal. It was awesome :)
At 02:54 because of COVID two twins met up and celebrated there birthday at the line. One in Norway and the other in Sweden so they didn’t have to go in quarantine
0:15 haha 😄 You: *laying on the table in Slovakia, Austria and Hungary* Friend: *calls you* Friend: Hey, I heard you were going travelling to different countries, that's so cool! You: Yeah, I know, it's great! Friend: So where are you now? You: ha, well you see, it's kinda complicated....
0:30 america and canada have the simaler thing for the most of our border. which isnt increadable until you realize that thats the largest border between 2 countries.
I live near that Belgium- Netherlands town. We also have a nice Netherlands-Belgium-Germany three-country border on top of a hill with watchtowers to get a view of the landscape. Pretty cool.
