World Trade Center 1993 Bombing

Friday February 26 1993, brought the first terrorist attack to the US and New York City. A truck bomb exploded in an underground parking garage in the World Trade Center. I responded with my camera and recorded what was to be the largest response of FDNY to an alarm to that date. No digital photography at the time, just film and the darkroom. I shot about 10 rolls to record history...today with digital, I would have shot at least 10,000 frames.

I love those old Mack CF Pumpers they were an Icon of the 80's and 90's. Have you read Firehouse by Dennis Smith? Or The Downwind Walk: A USAR Paramedics Experience on 9/11. There is a chapter in Downwind Walk about the 1993 response with photos (available on Amazon.com).

The FDNY fleet certainly had a wide variety of color, striping and labeling schemes at that time. Apparently, there was a lot of experimentation with apparatus visibility being done in the 1980s and early 1990s. It must be that in the end; the current design of white over red, with gold and white stripes was deemed the most effective.

5:39 That's a very rare FDNY livery. Must been an experimental look.

@@rodonis88 Their most experimental truck concept back in the day was they took a handful of the Mack CF pumpers and painted them a lime green/yellow color to see if the high intense color could be more visible in the city to high traffic areas

The ny emergency services were going throught a massive update program, everything from vehicles, equipment, radios and uniforms. The NYPD AND FDNY who were at 9/11 had different radio systems, and hence had communication troubles. computer and paperwork was changing, crazy! brave men here and 8 years later.

Yea Carlstadt isn't that far from the city, just like how Garfield (almost next door to Carlstadt) attends the Polish/American parade NYC hosts every year. So awesome to see NJ/NY side by side like that

Great set of images. Sadly some of these rigs like Ladder 8 would be destroyed 8 years later. The old Ladder 4 & 38 were interesting ones with the low-profile cab. A lot of new engines and ladders seemed to be delivered later in 1993-1994, replacing the Macks, but looks like you got a brand new Engine 52 in there.

I didn’t know the FDNY was still using those old AFL’s in 93, I guess they didn’t replace rigs as often as they do now. Also, I didn’t know the new paint scheme was introduced that early either.

Niche unrelated question from a 23 year old that never went digital (shot my dad's old Pentax K1000 for years until it broke then upgraded to a Nikon F): What panchromatic film stock did you use with your F3? Photos give off Kodak Tri-X feel to them, but RU-vid is unreliable as far as high resolution scrutiny.

A video about "world trade center 1993 bombing" that has absolutely nothing to do with the world trade center 1993 bombing. It's a video of fire engines, ambulances and other various emergency vehicles. Brilliant!!
