I’ve been following Mike Francina for years, and I always assumed his Trench Crusade art series was just for an art book, or his own enjoyment. I had no idea it was all going into one big project. I really hope this franchise takes off. As a game developer It’d be a dream come true to eventually work on a video game adaptation of this universe.
Just don't talk about the religions (especially Abrahamic religions) unless it's to say they're also the bad guys in a setting where their the ones fighting the demons as they pour forth to slaughter humanity. This game's community is kind of weird.
@@SSD_Penumbra Trench Crusaders is not Warhammer. The only comparison would be that the combined Imperium is the only faction with an objective to ensure the survival of humanity.
@@claymore1555 It has heavy parallels though. Both games are a tabletop wargame with themes of religion in it. The Demonic forces parallel the Chaos forces in WH, even down to the designs of some of them, eg Khornite Demons etc. Trench Pilgrims and the Church forces draw HEAVILY from the Ecclisarchy in WH40K, complete with soldiers with religions icons on their backs, religious artefacts being used, literal angels walking around, Prussians having a similar demeanour to the Krieg etc. Shit, even the Paladins being clones of Jesus is a reference to 40K with some space marine chapters being clones of their primarch, who in themselves are clones from Big E himself.
@@SSD_Penumbra You've misunderstood the meaning of my original statement.. Apologies, as it is my own fault. The statement is not made in reference to the in-world themes and religious symbology directly. It is a reference to the hostility of Trench Crusader's online community should the religious factions be spoken of positively as a moral "good" with relation to the evil of the demonic factions. Saying as much tends to result in chastising or an outright ban from official servers.
@@Daniel_Lancelin They could add a third, pagan faction that would be fighting both the legions of hell and of the church. Neither servants of hell nor heaven. Bowing to none.

The drama isn’t that serious the people that are the source of it usually keep to themselves and bitch and moan in their echo chambers about wokeness all day and everyone else just hangs out.
@@Koifin3correct, the reality was just a misunderstanding and the people behind the project having to make a stance with a lot of weird people coming in.
@@a_rat_named_mouse making a long story short: the discord server that the trench crusade crew is using got flooded by a good number of the people that got mad at the whole female custodes thing in 40K, these guys started to feel a bit to "at home" and started posting their weird stuff. Since the server is a small thing the mods got scared about the whole situation, since it was a loot of new people and went panic mode banning them left, right and center, and then the usual suspects of RU-vid vultures decided to make videos about the whole debacle.
I feel it's far more organized and streamlined to x happens because of Y resulting in Z, while WH40K just goes in every possible direction sporadically creating overlapping confusion, which results in them having to make new chapters to de-canonize others in order to retcon plot holes they develop as they keep going. meanwhile TC is just very simple this happened these guys did this those guys did that, now everything sucks everyone's fucked and both sides are just trying to gain absolute control over the world even at the cost of mass damnation and genocide.

@haydenrobbie7368 Britain as a political entity doesn't exist either. The lore is very clear about the fact that the Union of the crowns never occurs. There are still De Nomadies or at most Plantagenats on the english and Dunkelds on the Albic throne. Have you not watched the video?

I wish the Christian faction(s) would have more esoteric aspects to it. Hermeticism was a Catholic invention, after all. And now that I'm thinking about it, the heretic forces should realistically be more like Chaos from 40k, with more temptation and less "you will actually just have a miserable life and guarantee a permanent residence in the least savory afterlife possible." I suppose it isn't about religious accuracy, though.
@@Humansarebetter1 You mean the faith that has people mutilate themselves in order to gain a higher sense of self? Notice how both the Pilgrims and the Demonic Forces do that. Its not anti-religion. I don't care if you're religious. I'm pointing out that, as the game states, there's no "good guys". To act as if there is is stupid.
@@VindicAlpha my guess is there was a time skip I glossed over. I wasn't aware of this fact, so it's not clear in the video. Should've researched more. Sincerest apologies
The knights Templar was actually founded in 1099 on July 15 after the siege of Jerusalem. The placed their encampments on the temple mound hence the name Templar. 1118AD was the date it was recognized as an official order heraldic knighthood by the Pope
Love your video! As a small constructive nitpick: If you have to deal with german sources and encounter the weird letter "ß" the transliteration "ss" - _"Stoßtruppen"_ expressed as _"Stosstruppen"_ rather than "StoBtruppen" - would be preferable because that's precisely what the increasingly obsolete pseudo-letter ß or originally "sz" is meant to express, a sharper "s" -sound. It's similar with umlauts - they are also indicating two merged letters, _a+e=ä, u+e=ü and o+e=ö_ so just omitting the dots amounts to leaving out a full letter. Here you can simply replace the umlaut dots with a following letter "e" instead and it would be perfectly correct, even required in banking or crosswords and the like. 😅
@@KateriYTIt's not about pronounciation - hell, you are certainly doing a better job than I ever could in that regard. I was referring to an instance of written language including a perculiarity of written german I would stumble over if it wasn't coincidentally my first language, that's why I explicitly framed it as a minor nitpick. I thought the hint that you could just type "ss" rather think about how the hell to transscribe "ß" could get appreciated by somebody dabbling into such things, and I certainly would because replacing a combination of letters with another random letter because it bears some superficial similarity just isn't a matter of pronounciation.. I still appreciate the work you put in and still subscribed because it really wasn't meant that personally as it appearently came across.
Still think it woulda been cooler and worked better if the setting started in World War One going centuries forward (especially since some things like the templars didn’t exist yet) but the lore they do have is really cool
Warhammer has a very specific image and flavor to its world. Inspired by bunches of stuff? Sure. But no one inspi made them build a religiously psychotic grimdark space sims but the creators. This game is absolutely taking direct inspo from Warhammer, which practically invented the genre of "Religious space war Simulator". And that's ok. This game doesn't seem similar. It is. And very likely on purpose. @@tennesseedogpack
Its obviously completely different. Theres super soldiers created from cloning of a religious icon, different legions who specialize in types of warfare and weapons, giant super soldiers in power armor, machines that require an absurd amount of "just hang the pilot from hooks", some people go into a different dimension and get warped into super soldiers for the demons. I mean, what similarities do you even see?
Wait, if New Antioch is a Principality wouldn't it be ruled by a Prince? If it were ruled by a Duke it would be a Duchy. I picture the Metachrist like Lilith from Evangelion, this massive, tortured creature nailed to a cross, forced to endure its flesh and blood being harvested to feed the war machine.

The lore keeps impressing me, obviously like 40k but mixed with some history and a more known version of religion, honestly makes a really good combo, the fact that Jesus's blood and flesh is cloned and used to enhance human is cool af kinda like the primarch gene in 40k, im not a table top guy but i hope more version of media come out from this
I hope that after this universe gets officially established, we get more factions. I would love to see the armies of the Holy Roman Empire, the Papacy, etc.
Grimdark setting that completely disregards human populations. "Millions died in the fighting, and then a plague was released where tens of millions more died, and then millions more died fighting that!" Good god, how did the medieval population keep up?
Keep in mind its millions dying over the course of 800 years of largely static and siege based warfare. With much of the fighting being confined to an expanse of land stretching only from Egypt to the Levant. Most of the rest of the World is fine and most of the church factions are foreign soldiers come to due battle with Hells legions.
"That’s the reality; angry men in combat fatigues talking to God on a two-way radio and muttering incoherent slogans about freedom are eventually going to provide us with a great deal of entertainment" -The Prophet, George Carlin
If you get a hold of some existing crusader models from any number of model peddlers, you could do a full game of this set in The Triclavian Wars, which I find rather fun. It could be this community's very own Horus Heresy.
I wonder if they have party/single unit buffs? It'd be dope to have a support legion of "Heralds of the Firmament" that act like bards or support units to buff/debuff called something like "Testify" (rally buff to bolster group faith/moral) or Gabriel's Trumpet (instills fear for - hit percentages) "Molocs Tribute" If party suffers critical hit/low health Heralds of the Firmament will move to front and self immolate (set themselves on fire) for 2 turns in order to absorb damage of potential fatal hit to kill protected units ultimately sacrificing themselves for the cause through faith.
Thank for posting this! I'm usually averse to the money pit that miniatures games typically are, but this one seems really interesting. fyi: Corps is pronounced core. The p, and s, are silent. Also, scimitar is pronounced simitar. The c is silent. I know! English.
I, and several other people, spoke to Toumas recently, and he revealed that Ethiopia is still around, and fighting hard to defend their ground. This means that Nubia is likely a massive war along the Nile, with skirmishes and raids in the surrounding desert. The byzantines are definitely diminished, because the forces of hell are constantly in a full-scale invasion of that land. Vlad the impaler apparently got to slaughter a bunch of Heretics, so there is probably plenty of raiding happening on the greek coasts. (Which makes sense, because the Heretics basically own the Mediterranean.) The Caucasus are also a warzone. The Islamic, orthodox, and heretic forces are all vying to control that area, but the majority of the fighting is between the orthodox and heretics. Thomas told me that they have done a significant amount of work on making a map of the known conflict area, but it looks really bad when compared to the art that Mike has been drawing for years now. They want him to continue to focus on finishing all the character art for the main factions, and then make an official map, but it isn't happening any time soon. Join the official Trench Crusade discord, and you might be able to ask Tuomas directly in the future. People also make summaries of the talks that you can read, so don't worry if you miss any.
I find it neat that humans actually have an easier time being on… well, the human side unlike WH40k where there are an abundant of ways a person can get corrupted to join Chaos. Even the tiniest bit of virtue remaining will cause one to burst into flames near the Gates of Hell. While sinners at least have a chance to one way or another redeem themselves among the Holy forces of man.
I love the different factions, but I feel like they need to distinguish themselves in art style a bit more. The hound and the fly of the black grail look almost ai generated with how fleshy and veiny they are, then the tumor lord and thrall just kinda look like basic nurgle-esque zombie things. The azebs look like ww1 but most of the Sultunate looks like it’s from a fantasy game (their armor mainly, I don’t personally mind homunculi or automatons). I feel like they’re just on the cusp of it with most of these though, and we obv need more art before making any judgements.
