This video contains footage I shot of World War II aircraft operated by the Collins Foundation when it visited Avra Valley Airport in Arizona in 2016. This includes extensive “film” of the Boeing B-17G known as “Nine-O-Nine” which later crashed on October 02, 2019 in Connecticut with 7 fatalities and the complete loss of the aircraft. I’ve decided to re-upload this material in light of the recent release (December 2020) of the NTSB Factual Report on that accident.
Also seen near the beginning of this video is the primary pilot (Mac McCauley) of the future mishap flight. He was one of those killed in 2019.
The imagery seen in part leaves behind a legacy of this particular aircraft during her historical glory days of flying.
Aircraft seen:
B-17G Superfortress "Nine-O-Nine"
B-24J Liberator "Witchcraft"
B-25 Mitchell "Tondelayo"
P-51C Mustang "Betty Jane"

Watching this video all the way through for the first time today I am impressed by the great shots you got of the aircraft, Tom. You can always pick a modeller by the things they focus on. Amazing to see the interior of the B-17.

Hi Stephen, thanks, and yes on those shots! I try to get some close-up clips at air shows so anyone looking for detail can pause the video and take notes. Alas, this particular B-17 is no more.

@@MaxAfterburner Many years ago I had the Monogram 1/48 B-17G and had intended to build it using Superscale decals for Nine O’ Nine. Unfortunately as is so often the case I sold the kit as I simply didn’t have any room for it. Unfortunately accidents are bound to happen with these old warbirds.

I went to that show with a friend of mine who was a belly gunner on a B-17 in the European theatre, stationed out of Glatton England , his first of many missions was the raid on Dresden. He told me that his commanding officer was the pilot who flew the B-25 into the Empire State Building after the war in blinding fog. I've been in that plane , sorry for the loss. : (

I always liked B-17s, especially the nose because of the many peices of glass used for the canopy, do you think you can give another hint on your next build please 😁. Can't wait to see your next build!!!

Hi SuperSonicMach 12, thanks for your kind support! I have made no secret that my channel has struggled this year and the viewership overall for the videos released in 2020 has been very disappointing for me. I'm about flamed out at this point. Additionally, the politically biased attacks by YT on content creators has made me wary that anything that has been built up can be deleted on a whim. I have been updating some of my older content and uploading them to another video sharing platform. I will say that if Model Project #26 comes to fruition, a clue would be that it is a modern jet flown by the U.S. and Australia.

It is sad that many content creators are experiencing these problems 😞, but thankfully non of your build videos have been affected by this, and I'm glad that we can still watch them. Additionally, not to long ago I used your F-18F super hornet video as a guide when I built the same model kit and I thank you because that model turned out to be my best one yet thanks to your advise and weathering tips, and I even managed to make the display base as well which added a much more realistic feel to my models😃. Your vids are such an inspiration and hopefully future generations can look at this and keep the hobby alive for years to come.

I'm so glad some of the content has worked out for you to bring satisfaction and joy to your model building. When I hear such things, it is great "payment" for the the effort I put into the channel. I would say everything is "equal and fair", but I have noticed a considerable drop in my subscriptions in the last hour since I openly voiced my disconcerted view on YT's agenda.

Hi Bill, it is most fortunate that you got to personally take part in a flight of an historical aircraft. I remember walking through that B-17 and noting how thin the sheet metal fuselage was and thinking that it wouldn't stop anything being hurled at the crews. They were the toughest and greatest generation for sure!
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 3 года назад
As grisly as it sounds, I believe they did pick through the wreck of that B-17 and decided what was reuseable already. I know it ended up in a hangar and they were already deciding what could be salvaged. Most of the World War II planes that still exist are patchworks of multiple planes and even wrecks. Parts of "Nine-O-Nine" will undoubtedly be incorporated into restorations and rebuilds. This happens with World War II fighters all the time, too. I remember they found a combat-used P-51 that was flown by Robin Olds in World War II. It was packed up in a box after WWII ended and they forgot it was there for decades. It was later rebuilt and he actually flew it one more time! Years after that event, that incarnation of "Scat" was involved in a crash. Parts of it were incorporated with other P-51 parts and it lives on again but is not quite the same plane anymore.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 3 года назад
Hi AvengerII, I know there's a lot of superstition about using "crashed" parts. I know of a story where parts were used from an aircraft that was lost and those aircraft that had received parts salvaged from that first aircraft were also then involved in accidents afterwards. You probably know that tale better than me. 👍

Hi Charlie, the model for Project #26 was just finished on Wednesday (Feb 24th). I was behind on my working timeline due to unscheduled vehicle maintenance and a major water heater appliance failure. This, in turn, has put me behind on completing the video presentation side of things as well. Please note that it will premiere on Rumble and not on YT when it is indeed ready for upload.

@11:58 -- That's a converted P-51 C model (TP-51C). It's identical to the B-model of the P-51. The only difference is that the C-models were built in a Dallas, TX plant of North American Aviation. The B-models were built in the original NAA plant in California. I'm surprised this is still a full razorback. A lot of the B and C-models were retrofit with Malcolm bubbles. Not a full bubble canopy but better visibility than the the original all-framed canopy.
@MaxAfterburner

Hi AvengerII, yes to all the above! I was thinking of taking a flight on the TP-51C during the visit, but it was a bit too pricey for me.

Wow. Lot of rivets on that b-17 and hardly any recessed panel lines. The panel lines on the 1/72 scale Revell b-17 are bigger then on the real aircraft

I always have a chuckle when modellers talk about panel lines on kits. So many WW2 aircraft had overlapping panels. Best reality check is to see real aircraft up close and personal.

Pretty sure I've seen the 24 and 25 in and out of Falcon quite a few times... every time I stop what I'm doing just to hear the sound of those engines. And I'm not sure but I also believe Nine O Nine was the same 17 I got to check out inside and out during a CGCC AMT class field trip to the CAF there at Falcon back around 2000... I've always loved those beautiful WW2 planes. Bucket list item, sit in the cockpit of a Corsair.

@@MaxAfterburner I think you're right. I can't believe she went down and was a total loss; not to mention the loss of the crew/passengers from what looks like IS oversights in maintenance. I caught Juan Brown's very good review of the NTSB's report over at the blancolirio channel. Hope the FAA doesn't pull the paid passenger certification for these beautiful airplanes... @@MaxAfterburner and no microchips or cad /cam. probably done by dozens if not hundreds of draftsmen. After the war my father worked for a company in chicago. They made the ironers and folding machines for the commercial linen supply industry. And they had hired a German engineer who was very professional with a thick German accent and had come to Chicago after the war. My father had nothing but the best/nicest things to say about Eddie kambirg. And Eddie was very happy to be in America. Until at least 1970 he worked at Chicago Dryer co. as the only engineer who made all the drawings of all their various models and types of machines.

B-17s had 4 × Wright R-1820-97 "Cyclone" turbo supercharged radial engines, 1,200 hp (895 kW) each. 9 Cylinder radial engines, not V-12. Pratt and Whitney made R-1830-35 Twin Wasp, R-1830-41 or R-1830-65 14-cylinder two-row air-cooled turbo supercharged radial engines which were used in the B-24.

There you go: If you ask you what to build next, build THIS one. The HK Models B17 is great - i have the 1:48, actually building it. To build the 9 o 9 would be perfect for you, because you would have something special to tell. And if you dont know yet: we like to listen to you. So here is thing: i predict you would have three times more hits on this video if you had voiced over it. Now you: we like to listen to you!
