According to a US pilot, they sounded it once, as did their fellows. When they got close to each other, they would sound it three times. These were made by J.Hudson & Co of Birmingham. Branded The Acme. I have a replica.

The 101st specifically asked for the cricket because there are no crickets in Normandy. So there’s no confusion if they heard it. The 82nd used a different form of communication.

Believe it or not you can still buy replicas of these from the original makers. Theyre made by J Hudson and co (Acme) in Birmingham England. in the same building using the same tooling. its called the Acme 470 clicker

Was reading about these and found that the originals did not have a "US" stamp as they were manufactured in England.

The German K98 rifle made a sound very close to this device when you cycled the bolt on the rifle.

The originals have a specific engraving in the close side from Acme quality control. The originals are so rare that even Acme is looking for ppl who owns them

“The solution was to create something that could easily help soldiers identify each other” Well it was also to create something that German soldiers would just assume was part of the sounds of the night and nothing to be concerned about

John Wayne would hand them out to the paratroopers in The Longest day. The nexus behind the cricket was to identify German soldiers, as many would dress like U.S. soldiers.
