I am a convert to the folding rule for any measurements under 8ft: you can use them as a t-square, you can hook the the end if you burn a couple inches, they're more rigid than tapes, angles, curves, they are unbeatable

I've used one when I was a kid- my dad had one handed down from his grandpa. It was mostly for novelty (and pretending it was a butterfly knife- you cant do THAT with a tape measure) ultimately, it's not seen anymore because a tape measure does everything it does with more ease. If you have very short straight lines to draw, that would be the ONE advantage imo.

Don't forget no power tools.

They didn't have cordless tools in the 40s but they actually did have power tools. I don't know exactly what kind of power tools were in use at that time but i know portable (corded) electric drills were fairly common among professionals and (and maybe the general public too...not sure). Black and decker first made portable electric drills available to non professionals, i believe, in 1923. I recently went down a rabbit hole on the history of tools 🤣

@@Ryangillis45 nice thank you that's interesting... I guess it still applies to the Victorian era and even craftsman. I always trip on these old structures built with no power tools. No way I could give up my cordless impact driver!
