1) the middle mast is called the "main mast". 2) Yes, there was a clipper ship that had 5 masts. But most clippers had only 3. Most sailing ships had either 2 or 3. Single masted ships were smaller and tended to be coastal. 3) Vikings sailed on longships, not galleys. Longships are smaller, lighter, faster, more maneuverable and had a much lower draft (space between the deck and ocean). The rowers on galleys sat higher above water than the rowers on longships. The longships were also much more flexible than galleys. Longships did not have rams. Galleys had rams. 4) Privateers were only authorized to engage against enemy ships. Pirates attacked any ship they thought they could beat.
