Refuelling & Servicing The Worlds Biggest Operating Steam Locomotive! Chasing The Big Boy Steam Engine And Passenger Train Across Illinois. The Steam Train Goes Under Me. This Is One Of The Fastest Trains I Have Ever Chased. Union Pacific Railroad Restored The Big Boy About 5 Years Ago To Run On Their Main Lines.
I went to east central Illinois to chase the Big Boy steam train. I was in Illinois for two days and also got Canadian National Railway and Norfolk Southern Railroad trains. I started chasing Big Boy in Pittwood, Illinois. This is a small town with a grain elevator by the tracks. While I was there the line side signal came on for a northbound UP freight train. I saw the train approach and stop a few miles south to wait for the Big Boy. We never got to see the freight train though.
The next town that I went to was Woodland, Illinois. I stood in the back of my truck to get up a little higher for the shot. The train was booking when it went past. After that I had to hurry up in order to catch it again. Apparently I was driving fast enough because I was getting passed on narrow farm roads when I was going 60mph. This area is very similar to where I live in Ohio. I did get a short pacing shot of the train.
The third place that I caught the train was in Sidney, Illinois. At first I thought that I found a place to film it without crowds. A closer look revealed that I was wrong. Lol. I got the train going under me while I was standing on a hillside next to the Norfolk Southern line that runs between Kansas City and Detroit.
After that it was getting dark and the train stopped for the night at Villa Grove, Illinois. I filmed it getting serviced here. A tanker truck brought in oil for the locomotive. Big Boy burns oil instead of coal. We also see water added to the locomotive by the local fire department. I filmed the workers greasing the locomotive and inspecting its numerous parts. I also got some interesting video of the engineer talking to the dispatcher on the railroad radio. The first part of the chase they were using 160.410 as the road channel. They changed frequency somewhere after they passed Watseka and switched to 161.085 as the road channel.
The main line is busy and trains were stopped while the Big Boy was moving. While in the railroad yard at Villa Grove a freight train was given permission to pass by. As you will see a Union Pacific freight train passed by on the track next to the steam train. The train could go 5mph until the locomotive passed the Big Boy steam engine and then speed up to 25mph. I filmed that whole train and then I went to Tuscola, Illinois to get a motel room. Once again I got the very last room available.
I filmed the steam train crossing over the Tuscola railroad diamond the next day and that will be in Part 2. Part 2 will also include Amtrak, Canadian National and a short line railroad in Tuscola.
