People are not annoyed by the fact that they might be rusty or that they might just be trying to put on a show as social media influencers. They are annoyed by their pompous arrogance and incompetence, while acting as though they are an authority on the topic when they are clearly in over their heads. Anyone with a trained eye who watches this is going to question their credentials after watching the way they zeroed their weapon. When you are a part of a community, it's easy to tell when someone speaks your language and understands what you mean or is just a pretender who is trying to look the part. This is something that applies across all fields whether its fitness, gaming, business, or in this case the rifle marksmanship community. These guys came off as very novice shooters, who maybe have some experience with shooting, but limited long distance precision shooting. I'm not gonna unsult them by saying they acted like guys who've watched a lot of movies and played too much call of duty, but they were definitely in that ballpark. Plus they were shooting at targets 300-500 yards out with high end bolt action rifles with scopes. That's not even considered long range. They teach shooting out to 500 yards using iron sights in basic training, these distances should be child's play.

It isn't the first time Lunkers has been an absolutely abysmal spotter for another shooter. I don't doubt Nick's ability, he's public enough at this point that so many people would've outed him as a liar at this point. Lunkers on the other hand, I don't understand it. Everything you said is 100% right, this is basic stuff that should be like reflexive to him but it doesn't seem to be. It's 100% true that military service alone doesn't automatically make anyone a good shooter but these guys aren't just your average 11Bs, they would've memorized all this stuff in sniper school. That said, our military today relies heavily on top of the line ultra expensive gear, stuff the average hobby shooter isn't going to spend a couple months rent buying. Without all that tech, some of them are pretty much mediocre at best, even though they shouldn't be.

Former soldier here, non SF. They're a disorganised mess. Your run-of-the-mill grunt knows how to provide more meaningful corrections: "Come right two points of aim," "Splash one metre below target," etc. Give the shooter a reference relative to the point of aim and they can adjust their zero (or shot placement) accordingly. This is par for the course for Lunker's videos, lots of screwing around, little (or no) preparation and a long runtime. At least the swearing is military grade.

I think lunkers attended a basic designated marksman school, not a classic "rear sniper program", from what I understand he was somehow attached to a group that contained SOF members and he carried a SCAR 17 mostly... I think Lunkers is purposefully misrepresenting his actual military record in order for social media influence, The Nick guy seems to not be misrepresenting his service, although I haven't looked into the "most deadly" claims, Nick seems genuine and like he was pulled into the spotlight by his "friends" wanting to use his credentials and service record to boost their own greed and fame... Just my opinion. Lunkers ex-wife can attest to his character as well...

I spent 10 years in the Marines and I was a POG, NGL that was cringeworthy for me to watch. 15 rounds to get on target at 300 yards. I will definitely blame a lot of it on lack of meaningful communication and lack of fundamentals. There was a lot of back and forth large adjustments. The big thing you’re missing here is that the world of professional/competitive marksmen is completely different than combat marksmen/snipers…. I’m a gunsmith in Texas and have regularly worked with guys who place in king of the two mile as well as some combat snipers ….. in my experience the competitive guys tend to outshoot and out run the combat guys at that type of shooting…. The biggest strengths of the combat sniper is the ability to make calls and adjustments on the fly in extremely stressful situations….. most spotter sniper pairs develop personal jargon that allows them to communicate quickly while only having to imply information without always having to be explicit…. Just throwing in a new spotter or a new shooter into the mix won’t get the same results ….. Lunkers isn’t a great spotter….. but Nick is a great shooter ….. but like I said combat snipers are a different world from competitive guys ….. I’d rather have the competitive guy on a hunt….. but I’d rather have the combat sniper with me if the things I’m shooting are shooting back ……

In fairness to Lunkers and Nick, precision shooting =/= sniping. Waaaaay more to sniping than just shooting. Shooting is a key part, but you have tools to help you over come that (plus daily training that they haven't had in almost 2 decades for lunkers, idk how long for nick) like they aren't those guys any more. I use to ruck 15-20 miles fairly easily, now I'd struggle and some recreational hiker could easily destroy me out there, doesn't make him a better infantryman that I was just means I'm far removed from my glory days and he's current. I'm not saying this justifies the complete shit show, but just keep in mind these guys haven't been billy badass in a while, but when they needed to be they did, in fact, get it done.

Former US Army 11B, and yes this does look like a mess. I think it could be a combination of factors. When you are shooting in the military while in garrison it is very controlled(At least in my experience). Also, you will hit, and hit consisentently or you will get guidance and training until you do. While deployed, experiences can vary hugely. I deployed twice to Iraq and only fired my weapon in anger on one occasion when our COP was attacked my first tour. I know just based off of these guys background they experienced ALOT more combat than I did so I have alot of respect for them based off of that. Now that they are out, they are both social media influencers, content creators, authors, etc....They might just not really care much for shooting anymore. They still do, to make videos and for fun, but they may not take it anyone near as serious as they once had to. When I was in I was a great shot with an M4(not trying to toot my own horn but I was). I was a dismount, a rifleman in a mechanized infantry company/combined arms brigade. I took it very serious and I gave 100% percent effort. I got out in 2012, I shoot my AR everynow and then for fun, but not with the laser like focus I use to have. Also, both of them being social media influencers, I think they may have had there focus on the camera(making a video that will get views) and not on performing the task at hand effectively.

You shoot for a sport, idk if you have any military or LE experience but it’s a big difference taking a shot under duress in the field vs playing a game where you won’t get targeted and shot back at. You critique because you’re a sportsman and good at this one craft, this guy is NOT a sportsman obviously, and has played around a lot on demolition ranch so it’s pretty well established that he doesn’t take himself too seriously. There a lot of guys who in theory shoot better than someone in an infantry unit, but in a war scenario I’d have to choose the infantrymen as im not as confident that a sportsman will share the same resolve under pressure. Lastly it’s easy to become great at shooting if that’s all you do, military personnel have numerous other duties to accomplish besides sitting on a range for 8 hrs a day popping reloads on AR500.

I’m an avid shooter and I’m very proficient. I got into long range shooting and got addicted to the sport, to then bring my new skill set to the field where it increased the range I was willing/capable of taking game. I had a pretty big fight with my dad last year after he started rattling rounds off at an elk at 800 yards while demanding I help give calls to walk him on target. After giving him a couple, I told him he needed to stop. Hence the fight. I know his competency, and I imagine now, we looked like Pieter and “the reaper” in the field. One of us knew what we were doing but the other didn’t. What made matters worse was I practiced daily for months leading up to the hunt with my newly built 338 EDGE to shoot across a specific canyon I knew I’d likely see elk in. This same day, I made a 1 shot kill on a 6x6 bull at 1007 yds, so my dad assumed if I could do that, 800 for him should be easy? Pretty toxic logic. This video was as hard to watch as that situation was to be in.

And just recently, I put my TC Compass II in an Oryx, the sister company to MDT. In fact, the shipping info comes from an MDT email. To me, chassis are so great precisely because they are adjustable. I’ve seen similar results over the last 20 years. I believe the biggest reason is they will get training to become a sniper go through the courses and once graduated their kinda left to their own devices and yes I understand the senior snipers will give tutelage but with that being said I’ve belonged to civilian pistol and rifle clubs and the tutelage and training never ends your always being pushed to do better and learn more. I’ve seen guys at the F class matches that are civilians only , never served and just kill it. What I do think is the military trained are trained to put lead down range without much hesitation 1st on target with volume usually wins the fight but accurate fire is the ultimate game changer. I always enjoy having current or former military and Leo’s at the range they can teach us civilians stuff we’ve never even dreamed of and sometimes our long distance tips help them if applicable to their situation. But yeah when they go back and forth on the adjustments Mil’s To Moa is aggravating. Having a great spotter that both the shooter and spotter understand the terminology is crucial as this video clearly shows. I’ve done just as bad if not worse having a bad spotter, which is an art in itself.

As a follow up: Pieter, you wondered why the shooter kept asking for holdover in MILS when the spotter kept giving them in MOA. In the US military we dealt almost exclusively in MILS. Either the scope reticle was in MILS (don't know if you could ever identify which scope they were using) or the shooter, being a former military shooter, is only comfortable/thinks in terms of MILS regardless of the equipment he is using. I speculate the spotter was using a ballistic calculator or spotting scope set for MOA and he doesn't know how to either change the settings to MILS or he can't make that changeover calculation in his head (which most any seasoned long range shooter can do fairly easily.) There is a tremendous amount of pressure in the US to put combat veterans on a pedestal. As a veteran myself, in a family of retired veterans, I feel ok saying DUDE BROS like these and the guys at Black Rifle Coffee and the like get a free pass on acting like jackasses on social media. In fact, they are rewarded for it. As a passionate long range shooter dedicated to furthering my shooting capabilities, I would much rather watch videos like yours where I can learn more about shooting and about new calibers and equipment, than watch these peacocks strut around for 20 minutes. Also I feel he and other supposed "friends" drug Nick into the spotlight to hopefully gain attention based on Nick's service and accomplishments, as he does not seem to enjoy the spotlight or attention, rather was drug into it in exchange for the promise of future financial security... I spent half a day yesterday with Charlie Melton, seal Sniper retired and now precision instructor. We sighted a CZ 457 .22 at 50 yards until I was placing bullets exactly where I wanted them. Then the wind picked up, gusting 16+ mph, and we decided to go for an IPSC at 289 yards. With .22’s, we were consistently hitting on that target using StrelokPro. Now we struggled with those gusts some, but we’re talking within a mil and still consistently hit until we were going for headshots :). I honestly believe they had a bad day of shooting but were just having fun goofing around, which honestly is what lunker’s channel mostly is. I don’t think Nick shot like this in service 😛. I have a video I posted where I included misses, and I’ve literally had death threats on that video. But it’s also my most watched video currently (which sucks but also happens to be monetized so I’m not complaining). Legends have built up around special operations and snipers. In some cases, like the US Army Rangers, "sniper" is part of an actual MOS, not just DM or designated marksman. I have read two of Sgt Irving's books. I have also read and watch podcasts of Ryan Cleckner, whom I could wholeheartedly recommend. Cleckner was a sniper team leader in the 1st Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment. He explicitly states in his book on long range shooting that he is not and never was a sharpshooter. That would be something along the lines of the channel host, here, being a competitor in precision shooting. Cleckner was, in his own words, a tactical shooter. Not trying to pierce ear lobes at a mile. Trying, however, to put 220 grains stopping energy in an standard target out to 600 yards. Average range of combat is less than 800 yards and many is the shot that is 300 yards or less. I agree, this video might be for show. Since they are no longer serving in an active unit, they might not desire to hold to a standard phrasing of communication but I agree, you need to have agreed on terms. And stay within the measuring system you want to use. And Irving also mentions in his books with some of his stories of combat, you are trying to make the most of the situation. And so, you would think, on a calm day in Texas with no one shooting or lobbing ordnance at you, better shots can be made. Or at least sooner. I don't know, it just seemed like they were having fun. Most people who I have known who served had salty language. Except for my mother, who did not serve. But she could curse enough to make a sailor blush.

Well the real misconception is the military works with what it has. If u shoot relatively well ur doing better than most green recruits. Not everyone is a marksman sniper assassin. It's really more about tactics that actual marksmanship and knowing ur limitations. But yes I noticed he couldn't shoot that well in another video.
@ronws2007
@ronws2007 2 года назад
@@djl5634 That is something I also learned. The standard expected of green recruits is 4 MOA. This translates into being able to hit the enemy at 100 yards, or CQB. Can the new guy hit a 18 inch wide by 20 in tall target from house to house? While moving, possibly off hand. Guys who shoot better than that can become DM. Others specifically want the work of long range combat. Well, being a sniper is not actually about splitting the X at 1,000 yards which can certainly be the goal of various competitions. A big part of the sniper activity is getting into closer positions and you do that by being a sneaky bastard. Less distance equals greater accuracy. According to Cleckner, and others, such as Milton, a retired SEAL sniper and instructor, average range of engagement was less than 800 yards. Sometimes, quite a bit less than that. And the object was not the x ring. The object was to place 220 grains in center of mass of an 18x20 in target. For example, Cleckner would use a .300 Win Mag. Dial elevation from DOPE and hold left or right edge of target into the wind. And this is while an enemy is actively seeking you and shooting at you and trying to kill you. Same which can be said for Sgt. Nicholas "The Reaper" Irving, 3rd Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment. For a number of tours. Do these guys talk like PRS dudes? Probably not. Do the talk the way they did in service? Maybe, maybe not. Often is a the case where shooter and spotter develop their own lingo. No rule says that you cannot. And are you going to tell these guys no? Just remember, they are retired paid killers. It was the job to end lives per orders. And do so quickly, and efficiently, and don't take all day. And I think that is going to be just different than maybe an F-Class match with a 16 pound rifle designed to sit on the ground on a hill under a shade poking holes in paper. I could be wrong. I am not a veteran, certainly not a competitive shooter.

As a former military guy I can say that these are two guys, that share a similar background, getting together to shoot some good old 308 down range. Both have their own traumas but share a lot of the same traumas. This is simply therapy and messing around. To dissect one’s shooting ability that actually used these skills in combat is a bit elementary. This would be equivalent to a RU-vid basketball player critiquing some of the greatest to ever play the game based on a shoot around. If you’re doing this for views, you win. You got my view. End of the day, this is some weekend warrior content from a guy that’s never served or used any of their shooting knowledge in any practical application outside of hunting. I understand your goal is not to disrespect their service, but you’re comparing practical shooting to precision shooting. These guys don’t train like you train, hence why there’s a difference in technique. The “lingo” you speak of is not for RU-vid lol. This is how they learn to communicate. You’re really on your high horse with this video. They took a personal moment as two former snipers and shared it with the world. You’re using that moment for notoriety. You shoot for fun. When I was a kid (10 -12) in the early 90’s I had access to pistols and rifles and shotguns. I also had lived on property. I would clean barn stalls and such for money so I could buy ammo. Anyway, I didn’t have anyone to teach me how to shoot so I just learned on my own. In short by the time I was 13 I could outshoot any adult and hit bottle caps at 70+ yards with iron sites. I actually learned that using only the front site on a pistol was way easier and faster to use on a target. So in short, some people just have an innate ability to run a gun. I wish I would have been able to make a career out of it. My boys who are 12 -14 are really good shots as well.

Yeah I vividly remember this video! 😆 I was thinking to myself "these guys were both snipers in the US military?!" I wasn't in the military, just enjoy shooting and like to be good at anything I do, and I can communicate siting in a rifle better than they did 💯, literally just did this a few weeks ago. Was spotting for a buddy shooting an IPSC target at 600yds. His first shot was about 20ft. In front of the target, slightly off to the right. I told him to come up 7-8mils and .5mil left. Took another shot and he was still about 1ft. Below target. Told him to come up a few more mils and he hit the very bottom of the plate, slightly left. Told him to come up 1 more mil and he was right on. Only took about 7 shots total to go from hitting 20ft. In front of the target @ 600 and slightly right, and that is including the shooter dialing the wrong direction one time lol. If I had to guess, I'd say they were on cocaine and/or drinking prior to filming this, but leaning towards cocaine for sure.

It's very obvious a lot of you guys who are competitive shooters & were not in the Military don't really understand what being a Sniper is. Being a competitive shooter is very very very easy when you're not being shot at or having to deal with the stress of hitting a target that is about to unload a RPG on your ground team. Shooting is really only like 30% of what Snipers actually do, there's a lot more to than just sitting on top of a hill in a gilly suit in pristine weather conditions & firing at an inanimate target.

This is clearly two people that can’t zero a rifle. The splash of a .308win at 300 yards is easily evident in the PIP frame on my tiny cell phone. Through the glass is a cake walk. A scout sniper should not be missing static targets within 700 yards with a .308. Especially the Fed GMM loading that he was using at the end of the vid. I can understand being reliant on the spotter for range and atmospherics, but known ranges are simple with any decent training (like a 2 day precision rifle course). He should be center plate by 3rd shot, and all hits after that from prone off a bag.

Lunkers has always rubbed me in a wrong way as being overly cocky. His Ukraine War coverage is super cringe. You'd think he believes he's Norman Schwarzkopf. I'm pretty sure he wasn't a military strategist in Afghanistan. In fact I'm positive of it, but you wouldn't know it from watching him talk about predictions of BOTH Ukraine's and Russia's entire military game plans. He's always been overly cocky and unless you're Nick, you're not half the rifle shot he is. He just assumes how great he is out of the gate compared to everyone. Now that they're all teaming up with Demo-Ranch and Kentucky Ballistics, you get a chance to see them on multiple weapons platforms and it's rare Lunkers shows up. Nick also looks uncomfortable with most weapons outside of a bolt gun and an AR variant. I can't dispute Nick having a large number of confirmed kills in combat, and while that's admirable, it doesn't make you the best marksman in the world. The guys by the truck in this video are thinking exactly what we are: Wow...this is embarrassing. It's like 2 monkeys f***ing a football. I got into shooting at a very young age. I've competed in 3 gun, intermediate, and large caliber long range shooting competitions and get togethers all over Kentucky, my home state of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, and there's some Country Boys out here that'll embarrass you with a 7mm mag deer rifle. We've pushed out past 1000 with .408, 6.5, .338, and some obscure loads and have pulled off some pretty great shots in conditions that were far from optimal, and I'd never make a video this pretentious. This, and his military commander role-play, have shown me all I needed to see. Not to sound like lunkers, but at 300, all I need is my 15" AR with an eotech and a magnifier to get hits like this. I'm far from the only one that can do it too.

Nicholas was definitely getting annoyed with Rob as Rob was never really in a spotter role when enlisted and was giving him horrible calls. I think the reason nicholas wasn’t correcting his own shots until the end was because as a sniper you rely on your spotter to give you the correct calls. We also have 2 different classes of snipers here, there’s Rob who was a basic sniper who would go out with SEAL teams sometimes and then there’s Nicholas Irving who was Master Sniper of his platoon, a team leader, and was a tier 2 operator who had tons of training and would go out with tier one dudes. Not to discredit this video but there’s plenty of videos with great sniper lingo of Nicholas. He has one on his channel named Reaper 33 on his channel that was created a few years back. My dad served as a 1st Battalion Ranger Sniper and as a sniper MILS are engraved into your brain, all your scopes and equations use mils instead of MOA. So it makes sense that when Nicholas is annoyed and just wanting to hit the target and get half decent shots off that he’ll go back to the basics and ask Rob for corrections in the units Rob learned in. At the end of the day it was just a couple of guys plinking around and there’s multiple factors that goes into this video. However I think the video was horrible in terms of Rob giving accurate corrections and the corrections made by Nicholas as he probably confused himself going back and forth between units of measurment.

But ofcourse service members have a ton of other difficult things to do besides shooting so they deserve respect 🙏
