Strange compound setup but it clearly made some steam. I made one of these and the heat is insane, but yours was next level heat. Crazy

There’s a way that this would actually work and be useful as a shop furnace. It would have to be outside the shop and you run this as a radial heater across the length of the shop and exits on the other end or it wraps around and exits near the furnace as a stack coming off the roof. And it would be a useful way for someone to dispose of waste oil and other things as a quick start to the furnace. Then when the shop is at a warm temperature it shuts of flow to the turbos and returns to a furnace that will run all day really strong because you’ve built a super hot bed of coals at the end and can load in some huge logs. The best thing to do would have a couple egt gauges and wastegates that vent before the building to control boost, but if you programmed it all on a standalone ecu you could easily control everything even the oiling system for the turbos

a lot of cooper pipes leading from inside the furnace and to a water tank for heating it, use some water for steam or more water to just get hot water idk how much temps are in their to know if copper can survive. i have no idea currently how you can use the pressure.
@richb5860

You guys are awesome, even have coolant system! What’s causing the surging at the beginning? Or do you have a remote choke valve?
@coastboyzz
@coastboyzz Год назад
The surge at the start I would assume would be the small turbine trying to push air through the big one to get it spooling. Our remote choke valve was a shovel handle attached to the intake valve we built 😅

@@Idahodiesel Thank you! We love building stuff like this.
@BeRAd427
@BeRAd427 Год назад
the surging at the beginning was natural. the combustion chamber needed air so it forced the turbo intake open. and after it struggled to get air like 8 or 9 times they opened the "throttle" with a ramp by setting the ramp on the shovel handle that was attached to the turbo opening. the throttle. opening up the turbo so that the engine could not just breathe but go crazy, spinning the turbo up to as fast as it wanted to go and forcing air into the combustion chamber. that's why turboes are called forced induction. they use the energy of the exhaust to spool up turbines in order to force air (oxygen) into the combustion chamber. it's akin to blowing on a bed of coals to get a flame, it does the same thing, but on crack. it works especially good on internal combustion engines. that's why you know vehicles to be supercharged or turbocharged. in this case this is turbocharged. turboes make their power with the exhaust. superchargers spin up on the crank using a pulley. so it uses the engine rpm instead of the exhaust. which is parasitic. takes a little power to make a lot of power, when you're talking about superchargers. turbochargers are more efficient because they use the exhaust (the waste) to make power. but with turbochargers you run into a problem called "turbo lag" that's because the air being forced into your engine relies on how much exhaust your engine is spitting out. so it creates a small delay. whereas superchargers work instantaneously. although are much less efficient. superchargers are good for acceleration. like on tracks as long as it's not 24 hours of le mans, or perhaps in some applications like drag racing. turboes are good for top speed. cuz they just keep on building power in the higher rpm range. more and more and more power. but with the way technology has gone, people have found a way to make turboes more practical in all race modes, buy tuning intercooler (resevoirs) and blow off valves, so that the air is always there. using air flow limiters and one way valves essentially.

10/10 explanation 🙏
@braziliansheetbox2497
@braziliansheetbox2497 Год назад
Yet, you build the twin turbo compound wrong 😃 you put the compressor outlet of the first turbo at the compressor inlet of the second turbo and the outlet of the second turbo for the "intake" of the furnace, you just reversed the order of the turbos, the first turbo that should send air straight to the furnace "intake" and the outlet of the compressor from the secondary turbo to send air to the primary turbo compressor inlet, that's how diesel trucks do it
@coastboyzz
@coastboyzz Год назад
Well shit, let it be the first reverse compound turbo furnace in the world hahaha 😅🙏
@nolanbuie4186
@nolanbuie4186 Год назад
Wouldn't this be a sequential set up?
@shinjitsu6180
@shinjitsu6180 Год назад
I'm sry, but if the first turbo sends air directly to the furnace "intake", then where does the second turbo pick the air from?
@Taurickk
@Taurickk Год назад
@@shinjitsu6180 Big turbo pulls air from atmosphere, sends to small turbo, small turbo sends to burn barrel. You set it up this way because the outlet of the big is similar size to the inlet of the small, meaning the pressure stays about the same. If you feed the small into the big, there is a big difference between the outlet and inlet pipe, this causes decrease in pressure as the air from the small outlet needs to expand to fill the large inlet. Turbo doesn't care what pressure air it eats, if it normally gives double atmospheric pressure then when you feed it 30PSI, 60PSI comes out. So you want to make sure you aren't losing boost by feeding small into big if you want maximum final boost
@shinjitsu6180
@shinjitsu6180 Год назад
@@Taurickk ok, i get the point of doing it this way as it doesn't have any pressure losses, but why would you ever go back to a smaller turbo if you are already using a bigger one at this point? I mean, the smaller turbo is obviously not able to compress air as much as the bigger one, so, if you are alteady able to produce enough pressure to moove the bigger one, why wouldn't you want to only use that?

Next rig up some sort of cooling system that runs a circuit or circuits of water through pipes covering the whole furnace with the hottest points being the inlet(s) fed cool water from a radiator and outlets dumping hot water to a reservoir before running back through the radiator completing the cycle. Next thing you know you'll have a highly efficient wood burning water heater 😅

@@coastboyzz I'm eventually going to make an actual functional gas turbine, based off a 13 inch in diameter titanium compressor I got from an old WW2 bomber that I plan to power my motor home with. I'll be casting and machining the impellers, diverters, vanes, and primary shaft at my shop, and the balance of it will be made of an ultra-uncommon material [not impossible to get, but proprietary to my design, so I'm not saying what it is] that can withstand massive heat, and pressure, without weighing a ton. My goal is a 300 pound turbine that develops over 3500 shaft horsepower to an automatic transmission. And if THAT works... THEN I will make a tiny single seater aircraft that looks a lot like the T-47 Snow Speeders in "The Empire Strikes Back". But I am very hopeful, and very encouraging of ALL versions of the [now known term] 'Turbo Burn Barrel' because it will encourage development and competition. I know of one other channel on here [besides me] who is looking to do solid fueled turbines, and while he has not yet mastered the twin turbo setup, he is working toward it. I am cheering him on, because we need more people doing this, either as a hobby, to make a lot of noise like you have been, or actually advancing engineering. My background includes building turbines for Rolls Royce, repairing fighter aircraft, repairing heavy equipment, and designing renewable energy systems, so I support people in all of those fields, even sharing with them tips and tricks now and then when they really inspire me. Anybody who home builds ANYTHING turbine, I AUTOMATICALLY subscribe to.
