I’m just 3 months into ‘kitchen composting’ thank you so much for your great videos, the information & ideas are so helpful! I’ve just ordered some sifting pans & a pump arrived last week so I can start making some worm tea for our plants and get some casting for our garden👍 will be looking into setting up some breeding bins in the next few weeks too - thanks Capt. Matt 😊

A fantastic idea and a great giveaway prize! I had been thinking that one of those ICB tanks would make a great castings tea brewer/dispenser for larger applications.

This is my second attempt at keeping worms, last year I filled a big tote with mostly peat compost and added the worms the entire tote turned anaerobic quite quickly but I turned it out in the garden and managed to reclaim the worms this summer. I have made some worm tower buckets with coco, manure and saw dust hoping for better results this time around. I have searched around and your channel is the best watch it’s a really practical skill you have acquired and full of interesting information, great stuff hoping I can up my game and gain the skills, thanks for the info.

Thank you Captain Matt for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’m looking into aerators and saw you’re using the tetra…that one’s gotta be good. I’m from California and am also starting to use raw kelp in my compost, extract, and potentially in my tea. Any advice? -worm factory novice 1 year experience

Your other method of worm tea (tea bag method) do you put the soaked castings back into your compost reserve pile? Or into the bulk bin? Love this channel. Thank you for your teachings! Starting a worm farm this year! 🎉

Use a pair of panty hose to put your worm castings in and tie the open end of the panty hose to the handle of your bucket so it doesnt fall in or open up. This will prevent your nozzle from clogging and then you can remove and dum te castings into your plants afterwards .
@CaptainMattsWorms

That’s one way to do it… I typically use cold brew coffee filters myself (see my video from last year) - but this attempt was to make it as simple as possible for indoor plant folks to DIY.

The worm Farmers handbook by Rhonda Sherman talks about not using molasses in Brewing form tea.
@CaptainMattsWorms
@CaptainMattsWorms 11 месяцев назад
Interesting… what’s the rationale?
@Kylescultivationfarmsandfilmst
@Kylescultivationfarmsandfilmst 11 месяцев назад
@@CaptainMattsWorms Rhonda Sherman and Norman arancon do not recommend using that or sugar-based products because one reason is that if pathogens such as E coli Salmonella are presentthey will be enhanced by the sugar-based but recommend using something like humic acid kelp meal alfalfa meal as a bacterial food source. I know one worm farmer who makes worm tea using kelp meal. Kim Bolton at a vermi farm. I don't have the book in front of me but when I find it I will let you know the rest of the reasons there's a whole on this matter in the book. Whenever I made an extract I would always use something like ashes for the potassium calcium or biochar or sometimes nothing at all depending on what kind of of bedding I used. Also if you use sugar-based products as an accelerator there's a chance that the microbes might feed on it too quickly and then they have nothing left

The thing is , here in the uk for one we don’t have molasses- never heard of it before I started watching worm channels from the USA. We can only really use honey is what I’ve been told to use.

Do you put the castings back in the worm bin or out in the garden, can you use the tea for the worms as well to make the next batch of tea better ?

How long does this first mixture last? Is the casting reusable or do you have to remake a complete fresh batch?
@theresarothenberger2264
@theresarothenberger2264 11 месяцев назад
I have the same question.
@CaptainMattsWorms
@CaptainMattsWorms 11 месяцев назад
I’ll advise people to remake… as long as bubbling, it could last for a few days - until the sugars are exhausted. This process is for folks with large numbers of houseplants - so practically - they’ll use it all quite quickly.

How long will it stay stable if you keep the pump going?

How long can you store the worm tea in the bucket?
@CaptainMattsWorms
@CaptainMattsWorms 10 месяцев назад
Hey Jim! If tea is oxygenated and fed, it can last for multiple days. I would recommend brewing fresh after a week or so, rather than attempting to prolong a tea bucket for too long.

Howdy! Can we use any kind of sugar like white or raw instead of molasses?
@CaptainMattsWorms
@CaptainMattsWorms 10 месяцев назад
Most sugars should work - just not honey as it has anti-bacterial properties. Molasses has a spectrum of nutrients along with the sugars - so a very good choice.
