great video man! I'm surprised WA isnt a more popular game, its mechanics are so damn great. Very nice lil tut - I'm a long time Shoppa player and still happy that i can go online and play some games every now and then =D .

Nice one mate, can't believe it's still going. Used to play roping years back on w2 ('waste'). I think my clan was WRU (sooo long ago) but remember we used to warm on the map you used (modern edited version looked better).
@mablak2039
@mablak2039 11 месяцев назад
Thanks yeah I think I remember your name! Back then warming used to be the main thing to do, now it's more niche, but it does feel important to pass on these techniques

I've always been two minds about the ninja rope. On one hand, the mechanics are great and I don't understand why Team17 never made a real-time Worms for racing and battling using these mechanics, nor why no other developer seems to want to use these physics in their own titles But on the other, I'm uncertain about its place in Worms. It's a turn-based artillery game, yet a high-speed movement tool is what wins you matches. It's the most important technical skill to have and will get you further than even learning to hit your grenade and bazooka shots I was the #1 player in Worms Open Warfare 2 on the leaderboards until the NWFC was shut down and also played a lot of ranked in Battle Islands, Reloaded, Revolution and Clan Wars and WMD. Across all of these, one thing was in common: whether my opponent could rope well would change my entire approach to the game. If my opponent can't rope well, then keeping my distance just works and I can take a lot of risks and use ropes to get things done quickly. Usually means a fairly free win. If my opponent can rope, then I have to keep exact tabs on how many ropes they have left and position my worms very precisely, as I must assume my opponent can reach any point on the map in a single turn and still deal damage, just as I would. It changes the entire game. Nothing else matters as much as roping Of course, schemes determine how the game plays out and you could ban ropes entirely, but that's just not the common way to play Worms and never will be In WA, pro schemes use a short rope with only one or no repeated swings and that's probably the best compromise, but the rope remains an extremely strong item and if anything, it just means that being good at roping is even more important and advantageous under these restrictions
@mablak2039
@mablak2039 Год назад
Yeah because roping is a mechanical skill that can take years to get good at, it can seem weird to mix it with strategy. It makes some schemes more like chess boxing than just chess, there's a motor skills element. Kaos is a great newer scheme where ropes only make a minimal appearance. Not only do you have roping for mobility, you also have rope knocking, which can dramatically help in Intermediate, so rope skills can easily become too dominating. But it's interesting because WA has many mechanical skills you can get good at, supersheeping, BnG, roping; you get to choose what you want to work on. I know Crate Before Attack is a great worms roping clone, there have been a couple, but none as robust as WA. I would love to see a pure roping-based game that even improves on WA's mechanics, but typically the mechanics are made way easier.

@@mablak2039How would you change the rope if you could improve it?
@mablak2039
@mablak2039 8 месяцев назад
@@NuclearDuckie02 It's nearly perfect and I like that it takes years to master. If I were to change something, I'd want some way to make it even higher skill level. Like maybe the ability to press a button to make the rope bendy instead of rigid? Anything that adds more depth would be cool.
@NuclearDuckie02
@NuclearDuckie02 8 месяцев назад
@@mablak2039 Yeah interesting. I was thinking about the extension/retraction, maybe it's too linear and it'd be cool if there were some acceleration or bounce to it. Or maybe the rope can over-extend a little, but it's elastic and pulls you back if you do so.

I like many others on here spent thousands of hours of my teenage years roping.. trying to master spikes, shadows, dragons and mexis.. @mablak what is the size of the community who still play roper games? I'm sure with a few hours of practice, I'd be back to my old self. If there was a few people who are still interested in playing, I'd get the game setup. Let me know! I'll bring xlxPorNxStaRxlx back to life.

Nice, you can find people in the discord links in the description, not that many of us play ropers and warmers as much as in the old days, but there are a few. More people play rope race (especially big ones), and of course various defaults like Kaos, T17, and Intermediate.

@@mablak2039 very looking forward! I have one suggestion: since everything is so fast, it's challenging to jump back and forth from the worm to the keys indicators. So please consider clamping them to the worm (so they move with it), or in the vicinity of the trick, or at least move them to the top of the video. Thanks for much for your work!

I've played a lot of rope games in the past (beginning years ago) - including warmers with you and KRD - and by far the hardest part of this to me was the ability to reattach the rope fast. It drives me mad to this day, even though I don't play W:A anymore (considering coming back). I've even pestered you and some other people about it back then, but I could never get it, and the explanation that it is simply down to timing just doesn't feel right. I will understand if it is your trade secret and you don't want to give it away 🙂, but a thorough explanation of how it works would be just about the best thing you could teach aspiring ropers, even if they don't appreciate it immediately
@mablak2039
@mablak2039 8 месяцев назад
Hey cabbage, I assume you mean when you want to release and reattach as quickly as possible; the technique for one finger tappers like me is to tap once, then for the 2nd tap, only let the space bar come up the bare minimum amount. Sometimes it can require some wrist tension to sort of keep the finger in place, and I usually push my index and middle finger together a bit for added stability, while just contacting space with my middle. Usually this is called twitching, and it does take thousands of hours of play to refine it. For a 2-tap motion, I may use a bit more finger on the first tap, but then it's more forearm and wrist tension on the 2nd tap. I personally use a rubber dome keyboard for roping, with a paper ball under the space to reduce key travel time. I think new mechanical models like the wooting are also good since they have rapid trigger, but a lot of mechanicals aren't the best since you really have to let the space come back up before doing the 2nd tap.
@cabbage78
@cabbage78 8 месяцев назад
@@mablak2039 I've seen your key modification 🙂 and even tried it. But if it's really about thousands of hours, then I was too fast to judge my success with it. I don't think my total time playing W:A amounts to a single thousand. Maybe it does but certainly not roping.

Yes you can just log onto WormNET and host a game. Make sure to enable port forwarding first: worms2d.info/Hosting_Guide#Manual:_Port_Forwarding Or you can use Hosting Buddy to host for you: worms2d.info/HostingBuddy Here's one shopper scheme that includes all weapons (place the file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Worms Armageddon\User\Schemes): www.tus-wa.com/schemes/scheme-543/

what you are demonstrating is only helpful for people who race and play weird modes. what about the base game of worms vs worms and you just want to climb a ledge that you have just roped onto but cannot pull yourself up? instead of showing people advanced tricks they will never use in normal games why don't you show them how to climb a ledge where there are no other walls to multi rope around. Just the one ledge to climb.

These roping skills will improve every aspect of your roping control, but yes I'll also do a tutorial of the skills you need for a scheme like Intermediate
