True story....I went to college in NYC and lived on 7th Street and 1st Ave upstairs on the second floor. There was a 24-hour Bodega right below me and a payphone on the corner. I was from Georgia and I met a friend who lived in that same building. He had been born in NYC. We are still friends. We would always laugh about the crazy arguments we heard on the pay phone all hours of the night. The screaming, the sirens. Anyway, I live in the country now in Georgia, and when he comes to visit, he swears he must take ambien (sp? The sleep aid) and says he would lose his mind here between the frogs and the crickets that are constant in the background. The first time he came to stay, he yelled around 2AM, "Make it stop." Lol.

Wormwood ia a staple herb in my house. Every year i collect it and keep a jar or dry herb and make a tincture. It's very bitter, but it works great. We use it for upset stomach /indigestion - tincture or tea, and as a component of detox/anti-parasite herbal mix.
@herecomesapple
@herecomesapple Год назад
Would you say someone who has fear of the thujone in wormwood tea or tincture is silly? I really want to detox but I'm terrified of bad side effects of wormwood...been going on 2 years now and I'm still afraid to take it because I read the side effects cam make you seizure or have organ damage.
@miras2222
@miras2222 Год назад
@@herecomesapple If you are not sure if wormwood is safe to you- - I'm not saying it's silly, I'm only saying wormwood never make any harm to me or my family, it works great used for specific conditions, but we use only small amounts of it and for short period of time. Thujon, like many other substances could have side efects if you overdose or if you have intolerance, even aspirin could be deadly for some people. so if you are not sure about wormwood -lern more details what amount of thujon /wormwood is considered toxic, or ask profesional herbalist.

The thing about absinthe is that they used to put other herbs in as well, such as henbane which is much more psychoactive (and dangerous). The attributed madness that came with absinthe is more likely due to these "surprise" ingredients since people would make their own version of the drink and the only common ingredients were wormwood and anise seeds (sometimes other herb for the green colour). Also, wormwood doesn't contain massive amounts of thujone, common sage actually has more of it. Common sage however was never limited to use like wormwood was, there's other active ingredients as well but thujone doesn't seem like the most important compound in wormwood when making absinthe, otherwise I'd imagine they would've just replaced it with sage or other plants when it was banned. I've noticed that making a beer with wormwood makes the drunkenness somewhat different, it amplifies the alcohol's effects but not too much. There's a different kind of mild intoxication that can be felt from this plant, I also made "absinthe" by soaking the dried herb in strong alcohol for a few months but this drink didn't feel much different from regular alcohol. It could be that heat needs to be used in the process and it activates something, real absinthe is made by filtering the hot alcohol steam through the different herbs.

I just got a bunch of fresh wormwood, blended them in smoothie with some greens, bananas, apples, peanut butter. it's yummy. Great for liver to detox. And no, there isn't any hallucinating effect. Just consume it as a whole food, not processed. In Asia, it is easy to get fresh ones and people usually cook wormwood leaves with eggs. Due to its potency, it is not advisable to consume regularly for long period of time. Take it daily for a couple of weeks then stop for a couple of months

I read that the reason people had some problems were because there was an extremely high alcohol content in those drinks causing problems, and is very healing in lots of things, ... natural healing things have a tendency to get shunned upon anyway, I think God gave us herbs, for health healing, spices , it's amazing how stuff works together, example , pepper tastes great and helps digest food, etc etc etc
@brunetyannick1174
@brunetyannick1174 Год назад
Yeah, it was mostly a huge diffamation marketing campaign from the wine-makers at that time to get back market shares, right after phylloxera destroyed european vineyards. They used the most extreme examples they could find, paid for articles, posters warning about the danger of absinthe etc... Stories like "this man killed his wife and children because of absinthe, it made him go crazy etc", omitting that the dude in question drank, in a single day something like 5L of beer, 5 liters of wine, 1L of 70 proof absinthe xD. So at REALLY high dosage, it did have some toxicity on top of the toxicity of alcohol.

Wormwood is good for woman. It is considered as good herbal medicine in oriental medicine. In my country, we harvest when it is young and soft and cook soup, or after put abt 30sec~1min, in a boiling water, get them out and mix with rice flour(seasoned w/ salt & sugar), after steaming it spread roasted bean powder all over, cool it and cut and it. And eat it. It s delicious and good for health as well.

I'm guessing you have had bad experiences with alcohol. Sorry you had those. However, if you incorporate responsible drinking with family life, there are not problems. I have always drank in front of my kids and let them taste alcohol at a very young age. They learnt it was part of the family celebrations and did not like it, hence it was never taboo. No curiosities. Mind you, I don't get falling down drunk but will drink and dance around when I'm cooking. My husband on the other hand had an mean alcoholic father. Those men cannot handle liquor and have to abstain altogether. I do not want big brother in my business telling me what I should and should not do. We have too much of it now. No petrol powered cars, no lp appliances, no monies in our accounts, no meats or eggs-all very bad ideas. But lets feed our populations plenty of sugar and hydrogenated oils. Let's teach our children CRT and drag shows as regular cirriculum. NO to all that!

For upset tummy, use apprx a teaspoon finely ground wormwood. If one wants to use as maintainence, to boost the immune system, use for a month, a teaspoon of wormwood each morning before breakfast. But to boost the immune system, one can also use in conjunction with a quarter tspn ground cloves and a few drops of black walnut tincture for about a month every 6 months. Hello Mr. Hollis, another fine video ! I do believe that the plant wormwood is mentioned in the Bible , possibly Revelation's . Do you have any seed from this plant for sale ? This looks like an interesting plant to grow ! Please keep up your great and informative videos ! Also I wish I had your memory for the Latin names :)))

"Wormwood" is mentioned in Revelation, but like "apple" or "grape," it is a vague term that can be loosely applied across hundreds of species in the Artemisia genus. As such, there is no single "wormwood," but the Biblical context of the word is a metaphor for bitter. Incidentally, the Ukrainian word for wormwood is чорнобиль or "chornobyl," which implies an altogether different meaning.

8:11 “And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.”

Wormwood is mentioned in Revelation as a giant star that falls from the heavens and hits the sea turning the waters to blood. It's bitterness causes the waters to become undrinkable. An interesting side note - apparently the Russian name for Wormwood is Chernobyl.

I chop it up and use as a mulch around veggie seedlings. It's strong smell keeps rats and snails away from the plants.

I don't have any wormwood but I think it would do fine in an Indian chai you make yourself. My favorite recipe for Indian chai is boil some anise star, fennel seed, cinnamon, bay leave, fresh ginger, green carmadon pods, clove pod and black pepper for 10 minutes. Add black tea. Let steep 5 minutes. Serve sweetened with sugar and milk, I prefer canned milk.

Very interesting. Looks like "Wermut" is also the root word for Vermouth - the Germans and Hungarians having used it and A. vulgaris (Mugwort) in fortified wines since the 15th century. "Vermouth" is French for "Wermut". The actual German translation for "wormwood" would be "wurmholz". Interesting that "Wormwood" is in the book of Revelation (as a star, comet, celestial being?) - in Greek it's ἀψίνθιον (apsinthos, apsínthion) which is apparently where Linnaeus got A. absinthium. Since the KJV of the bible was published in 1611, it looks like the English had already mis-translated the German. I can't find any good etymological evidence for "ab-sinthium" meaning "without sweetness" - some sources claim it means "undrinkable". It makes sense, but "sweetness" is "dulcedo" in Latin and "glyka" in Greek. "The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many died from the water, because it was made bitter." (Rev 8:10-11) I believe persons such as yourself would be very valuable in settling historical scores like this - if the idea is that "wormwood" represents bitterness befalling the earth, it's a bit silly that any historians hold to the idea that the star is named for Artemisia vulgaris, which is quite pleasant to ingest. There are thousands of years of etymology and symbolism that could be sorted out by having a deep working knowledge of plants!
