Deuteronomy 29:9 - 30:20 / 31:1-30
Continuing his speech to Israel, Moses describes the covenant between God and the people, and lays out the future of the nation; he also expresses the practicality of the Torah to a united nation, and the freedom of choice that binds it all together. He insists that the Isra-elites must uphold the covenant with God and honour the Torah so that they may be rewarded with life in the Land of Israel.
The people are warned of the desolation and exile that their future holds when (not, if) they later abandon their covenant with God, but tells of their future redemption: being brought back out of exile from the ends of the world to once again be a nation under God, following His perfect Way in the Promised Land.
Moses proclaims to the people that he is 120-years-old that very day and that the time had come for him to pass on the mantle of his leadership and authority to his successor, Yehoshua (Joshua). He then entrusts the Levites with the Torah’s safekeeping, to be kept alongside the Ark of the covenant. The mitzvah of ‘hakhel’ is given to the people, which translates as “to gather”. Every seven years during the festival of Sukkot the entire people should gather together, men women and children, as a one body and one accord, at Jerusalem and the king of Israel would read the Torah to them.
These parshas conclude with the prediction that the people of Israel will turn away from their covenant with God, causing Him to hide His face from them, but also with the promise that the words of the Torah “shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their descendants.” Giving a glimpse of a certain future redemption that awaits them, the redemption through Yeshua HaMeshiach that awaits us all.
