Winter camouflage (white wash) offers you tons of creative freedom. Your model can be almost completely white or pretty worn down. The techniques are, however, the same.

Is some American modelling magazine there always was a column of photos which showed real tanks with effects that could be considered unrealistic in a model, for example when you apply a decal and use too much softening fluid, the decal will get blurry and smudgy, but someone found and send a photo of real tank with markings that looked just like that. *So if the effect is wrong, the pattern is wrong, the quality is a bit low, but it looks in the right scale, then there probably was a real tank with the same effect so it's realistic just enough.*
@NightShiftScaleModels
@NightShiftScaleModels 4 года назад
Totally true, but I think there's a difference between messing something up and presenting it as "it could happen" and doing something to look as IF it was messed up in real life, aka doing it on purpose. But even if we mess something up unintentionally and still know some technique that can fix it, then all is good in the end :)

I was doing winter camouflage to plane and it was REALLY challenging. I had to fix paint job like 3 times, because I wasnt please with results. Since I didnt have chipping fluid I had to be really creative, but I think the camo is one of my best paint jobs i have ever done (without chipping fluid 😊). Also thanks for your awesome tips I especially love that white blur snow effect that you applied 😍😍😍

Having very bad previous experience with all sorts of hairspray chipping, I wasn't 100% convinced by this. I already tried chipping white paint few times and even at the best of times, the results just weren't *satisfactory*. But this worked pretty well! I still can't seem to make the Worn Effect chipping fluid work, but good ol' cheapest hairspray from the grocery works fine. Thanks!

@@NightShiftScaleModels haha it was a bit of a stretch on my part, I was just kidding. But you praised "expensive" weathering products instead of oil paint and thinned the white Tamiya paint with lacquer thinner instead of water and somehow still were able to chip it!! 😂 in this case though I absolutely agree and the results speak for themselves. The white oil paint will blend out in a foggy look better suited to dust while the washable white paint- as you say, essentially IS a real whitewash and will behave accordingly 👍🏻👍🏻

To keep your texture job, you could sprinkle the model with oven cleaner, seal in a plastic bag, or a closed box for 24 hours, scrub with a toothbrush/brush under tap water, rinse thoroughly and you have your plastic like new. Anyway, i' amazed by your skills, always pleased to look your videos.

Martin, even with the mottled application of the hairspray, you've certainly achieved a really interesting look with this white wash. Layering really is one of a modellers most effective tools... and it's absolutely free! Go figure! Well maybe some Jedi foresight is required to see that layering is worth all it's trouble? Anyways, with the chipping fluid having dried in somewhat "awkward" shapes, I'm wondering if perhaps mixing a drop of dish soap would decrease surface tension and lay down a bit more evenly?? Cheers mate!

That is a nice one reference model of KV-1 in 35 scale you got there. The thing is, once I've bought a KV-1 model by mistake (yep, happens) - it was supposed to have a Л-11 gun but I've bought the "ЩОРС" one with a Ф-32 gun because didn't paid enough attention and now I have aftermarket metal gun and completely different model. But I feel much more inspired, so might start it soon. By the way, what do you think about soviet tanks without fenders? @NightShiftScaleModels
@NightShiftScaleModels 4 года назад
Noooo, I was talking about regular chipping effects - some people don't have the patience to paint small chips by hand so they resort to hairspray chipping, but that doesn't guarantee perfect in-scale chips. Also, doing those chips with hairspray often takes a long time as well, and it takes a lot of patience too. So when modellers try to use hairspray as the easy way, the results are often not much better. Painting winter camo with hairspray method is basically a norm these days :)

A laquer thinner? Would Mr color levelling thinner do?

I think it should work fine. I'm using Mr. Color Thinner with Tamiya paints (but not levelling).

Actually only purposely did one winter camo. It was for a U.S. Cav diorama for a veteran's family from a photo taken late '44 Ardennes sector. It had two weapons carriers and a jeep plus crews.

Какой смысл был наносить голубой фильтр поверх серого?

Grey filter tones down the "pure" white paint. Blue adds a cold tone to it. Both have their purpose.
