I work with a Shinto deity, and, obedience is part of the deal. It's a situation where it's like, "I know more than you do, and if you listen to me, you won't regret it." So I let her boss me and tell me what to do, in certain situations. The pagan deities I work with do not work that way usually. The thing about obedience is you can be led into situations that are far more amazing and impossible than you could have imagined and asked for. I believe that we are the deities, the deities are us, as the buddhists and shintoists believe. So, it's really me bossing myself.
in my practice, my work with ancestors is actually more psychopomp than anything else. It was to heal my relationship with living family members, and heal those ancestors and cleanse them. it's definitely not a situation where I take a whole lot of their advice. I did work on a project with one of them, for both of our benefit. They taught me how to work on cars, I helped them mature and move on to the next stage of where they needed to be. Now I just ask for their energy, that's it, no real communication. Unless i'm deeply unclean. Then he'll show up.
Thanks Siofra for a very interesting talk. It never occurred to me that connecting with a deity may require losing one’s free will or obedience. As we are now in an era of owning our power, I do believe that it’s OK to ask and establish clear unconditional boundaries with the deity at the invocation stage. I found that it can set a safe, creative environment for all involved, where guidance and growth its experienced both ways. And of course, if a deity is unable to be unconditional, then that’s fine and is to be respected.
I feel similarly about Ancestors- I'm also eclectic and open to many pantheons and.... I don't really understand ancestor stuff for the same reason. I have so many ancestors from this life, other lives,

Offerings are a great way to share energy with a deity (and then not have a deficit in the energy department). What kind of offering depends on the deity.
I have hear that the ancestors are the first defence people have to go through if someone wants to harm a magician. They are also connected to your blood and dna and if they get stronger by feeding them you get stronger in the physical and the astral. its better to watch the video "Bro Yosef Talks about the importance of the ancestors"
I don't worship or feed my ancestors. Some people do for sure but I have too many past life memories and too many potential ancestors I just can't get into it. Doesn't work for me. We all have different paths.
I like owls. For years have a small statue of an owl that is on my desk looking at me. I also have a jewel with an owl....what deity is associated with owls?
An obvious one would be Athena who adopted the owl as her bird. Lakshmi, the Morrigan, Blodeuwedd, Frigga and others. In a lot of cultures the owl was feared as an omen of impending death (probably because it flew in the night without making a sound so you never heard it coming I would hazard).
@@siofrasmagicalcove7293 I see. In my country (Romania) it's the same, people are saying that each time you see an owl it means someone will die. I don't know much about deities and I feel like I can't connect with them. Maybe it's not my thing. But I do like owls and other animals. Thanks
interesting, yeah there is a lot of misconceptions from the abrahamic religions and esp christianity cause thats most common here in the amercas and europe. The person i think was going against the abrahamic-style so they go “OH! pagans dont do that at all, its not like a religion in that way” and they went too far and not quite understanding that its a lot more personal and you almost cant make statements like that, trends maybe you can talk about. This is a rambling message lol
Tobacco is a species native to North America, maybe that’s why spirits of that area supposedly find it pleasant. But how about other places? In Tibet tobacco is harmfull for spirits and people how about this? What smoke we should offer for spirits in Europe?Who have right?
You work with what is traditional to the deity in question and the area wherein you reside. I don't use tobacco and neither does my husband. The spirits said that since tobacco had no meaning for us that it would be better for us to use something else, like the sage I grow in my own garden (which we now use). Every culture is going to have different plants that are sacred to them and harmful. Be mindful of the energy of the plant you are offering and if it's a protected species choose something different...or grow it yourself.
Tobacco doesn't matter to me in the sense that I'm not a smoker, but :) I chose expensive cigars of the highest quality,paid for them with my hard-earned money :D I hope that counts?(even if tobacco itself is not important to me in everyday life) Another issue is that I am not associated with any tradition, no one initiated me into any community My attitude towards other forms of life is such that I can even be a friend of the "devil" if the devil does not want to be my enemy :) I treat everyone equally, without favoring or discriminating anyone The rules of any tradition do not prohibit me from doing so because I do not belong to any group... or maybe that's the problem?
