Hi Amy. That turned out beautifully. Glad you had fun with it. As someone quite a bit older, let me tell you we, as humans, continue to make mistakes. Sure we get a little wiser, but we are still hunan and just still screw up sometimes. But it gets a little easier, and sometimes funnier, to give ourselves some grace. The happiest people i know are the ones that can laugh at themselves. I strive to crack myself up as much as possible!😂😂
That is excellent advice and so very true! Thank you for sharing it! We should all try to remember that! And thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! I appreciate it!
RU-vid "work" is difficult!! It's a LOT of work, and people don't see that part of all that you do. AND, you do a great job, Amy. I have watched many of your videos, and I get something useful each time. You're doing great, no matter what the "analytics" do to mess with your head. Your joy shows through, and so does your humanness. - Jane
Beautiful ravens / crows. I use to do animal rescue here in Australia & one of my last rescues was a species called a little raven, i hand reared it & did a soft release & 6 years later its off spring returns with there babies babies also i can be out & about hours away from home & have them interacting & feeding out my hand, its a surreal feeling having this connection with wild ravens.
That is so cool! I live crows and ravens! I watched a really interesting documentary about them a while back and learned how smart they are! They said you could leave dog food for them to make friends with them and I tried for a few days until I realized a bear was coming to eat it! Thank you for sharing and for watching!
What a lovely interaction. I have two grey crows visit my balcony every day. They drink water and bathe in the water containers I set for them. I suspected it's always the same two individuals that keep coming. After what you shared, it seems that is indeed the case. Especially in summer, they seem to appreciate the water. I wish I could interact with them but I don't want to scare them. Any ideas?
This is your sign for a gratitude moment... you're almost to 10,000 subscribers!!!! Woo hoo!!! I remember finding your channel and you were at around 2,000. Big picture is... you're on your way.
I loved charcoal when I was in college, now after my family is all grown up I’m getting back into art. First thing I did was pull out all my ancient charcoal. While watching your video I decided I needed an electric eraser and Amazon has several with changeable nibs for smaller erasers Your ravens are beautiful
Mostly this comment is to help your channel with the RU-vid algorithm but also to write how much I enjoy your content. My shyness (+ anxiety) leaves me usually lurking. That keeps me from letting you know how much your videos help me. I find your videos very calming. And you're a very talented artist.
Beautiful birds! I was not very fond of charcoal, but when I bought a complete set and tried it, I fell in love with this technique. It´s so fun and expressive! The only issue is that I hate using fixative (and chemicals in general), but the important thing for me is not the result, but enjoy the process of drawing, so I take a photo of my favorite drawings and don’t worry about its preservation.
You could always use spectrafix (the one that says "degas" on it)! It's completely non-toxic and I've had very good results with it! Just spray it in light layers and let it dry completely between applications!
Thanks so much 😊 it was stunning for me to realize how much I had learned with pastels an dhow those skills transfered to charcoal! Thank you for watching!
I so enjoyed this video. I even showed my husband. Stop beating yourself up. You’re a wonderful artist. You seem like a really kind person. I look forward to watching your videos on Sat.
This is beautiful, Amy! It's clear that your consistent work in pastels has transferable skills for working with charcoal, because one would never guess you haven't worked in charcoal in 20 years❣
Very good job with the birbs! I always liked charcoal, since it is the easy way to draw real isim, but since I am not drawn to it anymore, I haven't even thought about it for awhile. Thanks to you, now I am again😊
I am so glad if my video inspired you in some way! That is so great to hear and really makes my day! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!
Charcoal is a mysterious medium to me. I've never tried it, although I own a couple of charcoal pencils and some vine charcoal. Your art piece turned out well...looks lovely.
You and me both! It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but I still got it all over my hands and the desk amd there were smudges to erase on the white paper as well! At least they came up easily! 😅 thank you for watching!
How gorgeous, loved seeing your excitement and hearing your joy! Maybe you should get a jar/box/container write on a separate piece of paper all your different types of supplies when you have a block randomly pull one out and created a project with that type of supply.
I am so glad if the video helped you! I did really enjoy this which was so surprising because i used to HATE charcoal years ago! It's crazy how much the pastel skills I've learned transfered yo the charcoal! Thank you for watching!
It's always great to see the wide range of mediums you use on your channel - some of them I'll probably never use myself (and sadly, charcoal is one of them - too messy LOL) but it's still great to see any medium in the hands of a creative artist who knows what they're doing. And, as everyone else has already said, this one turned so really well and it was nice to hear that you got back in the zone while creating it - maybe that's a hint that you should have a few more sessions with the charcoal? Anyway, thanks for creating, editing and sharing another video for us all to enjoy. Kind regards, Brian.
I am so surprised I enjoyed it so much! I used to HATE it! If you had asked me before I did this what supply I hated the most I would have said charcoal! But I wouldn't now! I hope you are having a nice weekend, Eldrid!
That was awesome when you said about doing mixed media with the charcoal I saw the same kind of bird but the bottom 2 layers of the wings are metallic petrol colours with a slight rainbow effect ❤❤❤absolutely beautiful drawing
OK good, cuz I was gonna be one of those people that told you to take care of your wrist. And the crows came out beautiful. You can always tell when someone was really enjoying what they were creating!
I loved your drawing it turned out amazing I wouldn't have known you've not used it in a long time. I googled charcoal lightfastness and it absolutely is lightfast like all carbon blacks. I can't wait to see how you go using charcoal with other media
I enjoyed watching you sketch with charcoal. Your picture was beautiful and inspires me to try charcoal. Keep being positive and sharing your art. Looking forward to your next inspirational video.
Hi Amy! This was a very fun video! This type of supplies "testing", step by step, is so helpful for me. I never know what tricks and tips I don't know until I try it out myself or someone shows me in a video. This fast-tracks the learning for me. So Grateful that you share your knowledge and talent. Also looks like you're back in the "creative game"! Awesome!😃
So very realistic! I'm following the links for the charcoal, I've tried charcoal when I was younger too, but wasn't that great either, and when I began my family I ended up having no time for my art, so now, 48 years later, I've gotten back into painting, so I might as well give charcoal another try too! Thank you for inspiring me!
Great video Amy! I love the Ravens (crows?). Never used charcoal pencils. It does look fun, but I think I’d definitely make a mess. No matter what it is, I get it everywhere! Have a great weekend! 😊
It was a little messy, but surprisingly not as bad as I thought it would be! Not even as bad as my pastel pencils! And a lot of fun! Thanks for watching!
Love it! This is so beautiful! I'm happy that you enjoyed it. I always adore charcoal artworks, but working with it is a bane of my existence. My primarily white, calico cat always wants to help and we create a mess.
It’s absolutely beautiful, you are such a talented artist and you have really worked at understanding your art supplies, your knowledge is invaluable and so helpful. I hope you can get your confidence back after the awful experience, but this was a wonderful video and I’m sure you’ll get your channel back to where it was. ❤
I’m with you on my distaste of charcoal. I am going to drag mine out now that I have watched this! Thank you for sharing- I really loved your ravens. Also, real artists use reference images all the time.
Fabulous video. Loved the final result. I struggle with charcoal. It might help others if you talk through some of the techniques you are using while you are drawing to help those new to the medium. So it becomes a tutorial at the same time. Looking forward to more charcoal .
Thanks for the feedback! I liked the charcoal so much that I am sure there will be future videos! I was winging it with this one but will try to talk through what I am doing in the next one@ thanks for watching!
@@winterwoodsstudio you encouraged me to see what Charcoal supplies I have…..it’s been so long I don’t remember…….lol. Looking forward to new videos. I enjoy your enthusiasm , you do a great job, the analytics will turnaround so stay on your path and we will be here to support you. love your art
Hi Amy! Glad to hear some lightness back in your voice 🫶 Now…. While you were talking about ink drawings, I remembered I wanted to point you to someone I think you might enjoying watching who does some amazing bird drawings in ink (I found her while researching my dip pens I’ve never touched, etc) is Chloe Gendron - she has a similar style that I think might fire your arty brain up - I know it did mine although I don’t have a smidge of either of your talent… but a gal can dream! 🤗 She does “master studies” too which are an awesome watch on how the greats used ink and hatching and… well… you can watch yourself and see! 🤗 She’s fascinating.
Don’t know if the link will work and didn’t want it to delete my previous post but - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K-yELNwUmU0.htmlsi=eKgFJ--4mgyT-eh0
Hi Amy, what a wonderful art piece from a very talented artist. I like this type of video where you explain how to use materials and also get some parts in real time. Keep going girl. Liz ❤️
It turned out great! I do a lot of charcoal work, and I like to use Arches cover paper. It works well with the erasing technique and doesn't tear. Also, I use charcoal sticks to cover a large area of the paper, then smooth it in with an old rag. That puts down a base similar to powdered charcoal.
Beautiful! It is great to see you excited about a new (old) medium to work in. Looks like you kicked the old art block to the curb! I love the drama of charcoal and used to do a lot of if several years ago. The only way I could keep my paper somewhat clean was to work vertical. Plus I avoided white paper at all costs...haha.... It helped that I love the look of both white and black charcoal on toned paper. I would generally use the back side of Canson Mi Tientes. But what I hated about it was the mess which was why I moved away it. And the first time I sneezed while working with it! OMG, there went half my hard work! 🤣 If I were to take it up again, I would really have to use a mask because my sinuses cannot take the dust. Like you, I have vine, pencils, and blocks just sitting in my drawer untouched. However, it did give me a deep appreciation for toned paper and I still love to use it whenever I can. Grey and browns are my favorite.
Lol! Oh no, Tracie! That sounds awful! These weren't too powdery, not even as bad as my pastel pencils, so that was good! I did however order some more charcoal supplies to try on a canvas. Hopefully they aren't too terrible! I will definitely need to work vertical and probably in my basement for that! Thank you for the tip! I hope you have a nice weekend!
@@winterwoodsstudio I am sure part of the dust issue was because even the back side of the paper I mostly used is somewhat textured. Plus, I somehow manage to always make a mess when making any kind of art. You should have seen the latest mess I made when I was mixing paints for a mural I am getting ready to paint on my garden shed. Good grief, I went through 3 aprons! I always have a couple of extra for when the grandkids come to make art with me. I guess the term "splashing paint around" was made for me. Too bad none of it has made it on the mural yet! 🤣🤣🤣
I love how the drawing turned out. You make me want to try charcoal again too. I wasn’t a fan in my 20s. Keep being you and don’t worry about the algorithm. God is in control of it anyway. Trust in Him. 🙏🏻
I just made a video about that... is it me that you watched? Oh probably not i am just small. Lol but I got excited for a minute that maybe you saw my video. Any way, you seem much happier today! Thank you for inspiring me like usual! ❤😊
The general consensus for charcoal is that it's pretty lightfast, though I suppose it depends on the brand. I'd just be cautious about tinted charcoal (where different pigments are added to give it more colour) since lightfastness can vary.
Hi Amy! I'm so glad a realistic style of drawing brought you joy again. The ravens came out SO good. What is the difference between vine charcoal (what is vine charcoal) vs charcoal pencils?
I love these crows / ravens! Like you, I had an aversion to charcoal...maybe I should revisit. Pencils seem a good way to keep the mess contained. You say you are rusty? Cant wait to see when you think you are fit 😂
I donated my most least used art supplies in my neighborhood’s little library. I put my cotmans in there and someone took it so I hope they and or their kids will use it.
Just wanted to comment. Ive been working on your back list and reading your blog on your very first video. I could relate so much as i done art all through school but didnt progress with skills till i left school but because i was only mediocre at school or so i thought i went in to care and worked for 20 yrs only reaching for a pen and pencil ocassionally. Had to leave work due to ill health going on 7 years ago with CFS Thats when i reached for my art again. I was surprised that i was actually skilled as i could now use reference and obviously didnt have that option years ago apart from still life which was as close as i got. Stupid art rules re cheating etc rediculous now when i think back as your brain doesnt autimatically know how to draw something and has to learn it. So here i am at 45 putting together an art studio in my dining room and begining the journey of mixed media. I only ever used graphite and coloured pencil before. You are motivating and enspiring i feel like were on this journey together somehow. Finding joy and excitement in art again. I get rediculously excited opening the smallest box of art materials😂 I have just found my charcoal aswell. Maybe ill make a drawing with it instead of using it for sketching over baselayers. Again though its messy and i dont like the texture lol
