Worst boat job so far - undoing a botched repair. Lifeboat to solar electric yacht - H.o.G. Part 10

I bought a 150 passenger lifeboat. Now I'm repairing, refitting and replanning it as a full-on solar yacht made almost entirely from recycled resources.
In this video, I'm undoing a botched repair job that involved sealing off access to screws after pouring 10 litres of resin on top.

Wow that looked horrible to deal with... Love the longer video though :)

Thanks, good to hear. The 28min foam removal video was too long for many, so I’m still trying to find a good standard length. Heavily depends on how much content I have of a job - me talking into the camera for minutes on end gets boring and sometimes there’s not much interesting footage to shoot.

@@HeartofGoldLifeboat yeah I can imagine that it's quite the balancing act working out what to film, and also how to film while getting stuff done! I personally think around 20 mins is a good length. I've been watching a lot of Mads' sail life videos and he seems to summarise a week per video. Looking forward to seeing how your channel develops :)

Lifeboats must be periodically re-certified. I wonder if this is something the inspectors would be interested in seeing? Any company willing to mess it up this badly probably take other shortcuts, also.

Boat repair bodge-archeology 😂 that sums up a lot of permanent repairs out of sight out of mind ....and intended not to be touched again by who ever. Till some bright spark who wants to change check and repair comes along. Taking an endoscopic peek dawn down a whole at the other side is wise so you know what the state of play there is JIC 🤔 Forewarned is for forearmed 👍🏼 Glad dad inlaw was around to bring in the heavy artillery 😁🧙‍♂️

Your father in law has the wrong end on the electric hammer... they make a 3 or 4 inch wide spade end.. looks like a thick flat putty knife and would work great for scraping along down there.. you are going to hopefully learn the name of tools and how to properly use them.. why in Germany do people when working on construction projects have a one piece coveralls along with hard hat safety glasses everything protective gear.. look like a OSHA Employee

Honestly some of those bull recessions should be used for the pantry and a lowered toiler, then you can put a kitchen counter on top, next to it a sink and it simplifies the plumbing. The other side fridges and pantry to store food and what not, plus fridges generate heat that goes up Look up the used Tesla's post 2020 heat pumps, they are just compressors. Other aspect of heat recovery refrigerant tubing under the hull, water is usually a fixed temperature, or under the solar panels as the black attracts heat. On the bottom the advantage is constant temperature, even if negative temperatures above. On the top only makes sense in sunny days as a boost. Also if you refresh the top in the summer by dispersing the heat under the panels to the water your PV system will be more efficient. And thermo electrics might also be interesting

Yeah longer videos are better! Could watch the time lapses for hours tbh haha but that's just me personally. Love the project, keep it up man! :)

@@HeartofGoldLifeboat oh awesome! maybe you could do them in stages/seasons? like a massive montage of renovations up to "x" point in time? not trying to add to your already increasing workload but at some point you will be finished and run out of videos haha so new ideas are always nice

Yep I’ll do a massive one when I’m done, but that’s a few years away. Before that, I’m more thinking of a Google Photos album with all of them unedited/unfiltered for interested viewers :)

I think 15mins is the sweet spot. I think the key is to make a solid schedule. Twice per week (Mon / Thur?) seems to be a good formula for growth that I've seen.
@HeartofGoldLifeboat
@HeartofGoldLifeboat 2 года назад
Yep, I’m trying to move from „maybe once a month“ to „once a week most of the time“, knowing that that’s not ideal. But while running a small business, building that boat and keeping some time for the family, that’s probably the most I can do for now.

@@HeartofGoldLifeboat Sounds more than reasonable. Enjoying the project, thanks for filming it and bringing us along. Good luck, from Cayman.

Wouldn't it be easier to dissolve the foam using something like acetone? Or could that cause issues with other materials used on the boat like the fiberglass?
@HeartofGoldLifeboat
@HeartofGoldLifeboat 2 года назад
Thought about that, but a) probably not very healthy even with a mask, b) could chemically weaken the fiberglass without showering and c) would need tens, if not hundreds of litres for this amount - that need to be disposed afterwards as well.
@Troglobitten

@@HeartofGoldLifeboat yeah it's going to be an unpleasant job either way I guess. Hope it's the last of the foam that needs to be removed :D
