It's such a controversial book. I personally loved it because it was so cheesy and cringey but I absolutely get why so many people don't.

I am actually stunned that so many people like the Love Hypothesis. It was so shallow and the mc acted like she was 16 and not an adult. I really tried to get into it, but could not.

For me, it's between. The execution, writing style, plot, that one SA scene which it's just ignored, the FMC sitting on the MMC's lap in a talk, the MMC being boring and just "huge", that one b00b scene, and PhD level students acting like children are kinda the turned off for me. But on the other side, I like the science-y themes and jokes being used, and there are times when some scenes are quite cute, imo. It's kinda like a "good trash" read for me😂

from my personal experience, sometimes someone that's super smart intellectual might be less emotionally intelligent. So I could buy that aspect of super smart people acting like middle schoolers emotionally... but execution of story was my issue with the book.

I agree with you about The Maid. In my case I was told it was an Agatha Christie style murder mystery… It’s not. Not at all. Christie is famous for giving you all the clues and then everything falling into place at the end. This book did none of that. The only reason there was a mystery at all was because the MC withheld information until the very end. So annoying.

i loved starsight but i totally understand what was said about it. I think some pretty popular books i read that i didnt like this year was Truly Devious, The Martian, and The song of Achilles

I personally loved Comfort Me With Apples even though the "twist" was pretty easy to recognize. I just enjoyed the journey and the writing. It's a book that I appreciated as a short story that took about two hours to read, and I do not think it would have worked as a full-length novel. So many of my least favorite books of the year were least favorites because they were simply too dang long. I kept thinking "where are your editors? why are they not cutting any of this out?"

The Ruins by Scott Smith - DNF'd it twice. His overuse of 💩 🩳 to show how scarred the characters were was just too much for me. It now sits in the Goodwill pile

I felt the same way about When Women Were Draggons. I was really looking forward to this book. I felt like it was trying to be deep and tackle larger social parallel issues but it lost me. I wish there was more details about the aunt, mom and other side characters. I was not entertained and felt stupid reading it

The book that was so hyped that just completely fell flat for me was The Starless Sea. It had SO much potential and I was invested until the end and then, for me, it just had the worst ending-so unbelievable. I just couldn't. I was so disappointed. I don't understand the love for that book.

I really went into Daughter of the Moon Goddess thinking it would be like Empress of All Seasons which I really enjoyed and it was so boring. It just felt really tepid

i think this is the first video talking about disorientation that i've seen that actually discusses the plot LMAO i had no idea it was about a college student writing a dissertation about a chinese poet like every mention of it was alway like "hey jsut read it" and its like?? but what is it about tell me more lmao anyways appreciate your depth even with you avoiding major spoilers the anime cosplay thing made my physically cringe wow

Can full heartedly assure you that you were not the problem with To Sleep in a Sea of Stars! I read the whole book, gave it 2 stars (what a depressing rating for an almost 900 page book) and I can only tell you: it got worse. Everything was super convenient all the time and basically everything that happened kept happening the exact same way (and the characters didn't get any more interesting either).

the main character in disorientation is an exaggeration of model minorities. satires aren't for everyone bc they're supposed to be ridiculous in order to point out how our reality is ridiculous as well

The Nature of Witches annoyed me mostly because it was supposed to be a statement about global warming. Done badly. But also I just don't care about witches with every type of magic and it feels like in books they always give them all these different kinds of magic in one body and it makes them feel overpowered.

The Maid was...not good. And I don't even feel like it was that good in terms of neurodivergent rep because I felt like the main character often felt like the butt of the joke throughout the novel. I did love AGGGTM though haha.

I also hated ‚Comfort me with apples‘. I gave it 1 star. It was sooo disappointing and the ending made me mad. It felt like it tried to be like the movie ‚Mother‘ with Jennifer Lawrence (which I also hate). Ugh. Can’t say more without spoiling. One I also hated was ‚Hide‘ by Kiersten White. It had so much potential. The setting would’ve been so cool but the worldbuilding lacked. To many characters who don’t matter get thrown at the reader and the twist was lame. It got 3 from me but everytime I think about it, I give it a lower rating lol
