Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on RU-vid. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Airlines are constantly damaging wheelchairs in cargo, too. I was listening to a podcast today and the host said, “An airline employee breaking someone’s chair should be treated like an employee breaking someone’s legs. They’re taking away their mobility.” Really put things in perspective.

I became disabled in 2015 and haven’t flewn since. I’m too scared my powerchair breaks, this is a nightmare, since I can only sit in my chair, because of an ortheses I need to be able to sit, as external support for my body. Your chair gets tossed about in the cargo hold and I’ve heard so many stories about broken and busted up chairs that I just don’t even want to bother. If I can’t drive there I won’t go there. It really ruins travel for me. So stupid.

It would be nice indeed if I could stay in my chair during a flight (I am a wheelchair user). Sadly, it will likely never happen. Airplanes are fundamentally different from trains and buses (which have done this by the way). The passenger cabin is designed for maximum survival during an extremely high impact event. Unfortunately, there are no restraints made that would hold a wheelchair and its occupant during such an event (crash). Having a 500 pound wheelchair+occupant hurtling through the air after a crash is the nightmare scenario they are trying to avoid.

Hi squirmy and grubs! I’m glad you got your chair working again. I work for a DoD terminal, so I know some of the ins and outs of moving passengers and cargo. I was reading some of the comments. Some of these folks have really good points. I whole-heartedly agree that the airlines should be more accessible. I’m glad I see youtubers/influencers like you both, who have decided to educate people like me on the wide range of needs of so many people. I’m only a shift supervisor, but I’m going to start looking into ways to improve my terminal. If anyone has ideas, please let me know. Sometimes, when we’re lifting heavy bags and cursing people for putting bricks in their luggage, we forget that very real people need this stuff. I try to MAKE myself less ignorant, but again, feel free to comment and let me know how to improve. Much love. ❤️

How does that even make any sense regarding safety? How is it in any way safe Not worth that small being on wheels convenience if it will compromise yourself and everyone else on the plane. Why not admit the obvious safety issue? Everyone is complaining on the convenience and little mention of the very serious safety issues that bring and saying “they can do it on so easily on buses and trains so planes can just as easily do it too” PUBLIC transport is not comparable in the slightest to a airborne plane! It is a safety and a liability issue. For literally everyone on the plane. Not worth it at all!

It's a valid concern. I work in the planes, so I will clarify why. You see, most aisles in the plane are too small to accommodate regular wheelchairs. Reason is , to accommodate as many seats as possible....it business and profits nothing personal . Second, for safety reasons which is more important for the customers and the airlines. Everyone's seat in the plane has to be secured to the floor . When hit by severe turbulence, one's chair will be flying around and to the ceiling causing injury to themselves and others and possible deaths. I hope with a little light on the reasons, you can find ways to navigate better in your future essay arguments. Best of luck

@zuzuspetals9281
@zuzuspetals9281 3 года назад
There’s a danger in having the person in the chair on the plane. Even when they’re in the chair securely and the chair is secured to the plane floor if there is a incident with the plane, like a hard landing or crash, that wheelchair becomes incredibly dangerous to the person in the chair and other passengers. It’s hard to have to put their chair in the cargo hold but it’s really safer for everyone. My mom’s chair weighed about 300 lbs. and took 4 firemen to lift, so it didn’t need to break loose in a plane crash. I do agree that the airlines should treat them more carefully and if they had to pay to replace them they’d take far better care of them for passengers.

My son is in a wheelchair, and I have to fight everytime we go somewhere. I get told all the time because he's so little and young it's not that hard, while I don't find it hard most of the time it isn't always easy in every situation. I vote handicapped access everywhere, including airplanes and wheelchairs. I've gotten so frustrated at how ignorant some people can be about it. It's a huge problem, and most people don't realize unless it directly deals with them or someone they know.

Love is not a burden. Just watching this and watching Hannah and her mom lovingly and patiently working on Shanes wheelchair to help him fly just warms my heart. Such loving people. All three working together, airlines so stupid to not allow wheelchairs on airplanes are the problem. Airlines are the problem and this family is full of love and how dare anyone question their true love. I said my peace. This is what normal should look like, their actions not the airlines and it is so rare I had to comment. Love is not a burden. Word.

Thank goodness you have level heads in Hannah and her Mum too, you make a great team. So glad you got it sorted. But what the hell did they do to it? The value of this video as an instructional tool is immense, as the focus does not shift to complaints made in frustration at the hands of ignorance, but rather documents the events, time line, and foreseeable hurdles which the airline failed to address. You all maintain a good natured, ‘rolling with the punches’, serenity. May your vlog go viral, perhaps with a remix of the soundtrack🎭.

We can do it in busses, why can't we do it in planes???? There should be an international effort, but of course if there's a space for a wheelchair it is less passengers flying in the flights there's no wheelchair users, so less money 🤷🏻‍♀️ they are not interested at all. In busses, the wheelchair space is used for standing people most of the time, in a plane it can't happen

@@theketovillagee Planes don't have "empty spots." They try to eke every penny out of every spot. The only empty spots are ones that are required for movement/escaping. We as a society really have to be willing to absorb a little bit of the costs (because companies will always try to pass the costs on to us) for things like dedicated wheelchair spots on _every_ plane. There's a large portion of society that just doesn't have the empathy for that.

I was a Flight Attendant and here is some insight for you guys. All due respect when I say this, but it is much safer for the wheelchair that heavy to go secured below where other heavy cargo goes for weight and balance. Shane's chair is like 400 pounds+Shane's body size you pair that with someone sitting next to him and youv got a issue. Behind the scenes weight in the cabin is checked before take off, to make sure the plane can take off and land safely. On some planes if there is even one person in the wrong zone of a plane the captain will have people move. If there is too much weight in the cabin passengers can and will be removed at times. Fuel is also measured into weight in balance. That wheel chair goes below because it can be centered or balanced out with other extremely heavy cargo Let's say the planes were configured to hold his chair in the cabin instead, you would still run into a problem of the chair not being bolted down securely. When you add turbulence or G forces if the plane were to drop in clear air turbulence of if there was an emergency his 400 pound chair would become a 1200lb chair and with no bolts that chair becomes extremely dangerous and would kill someone and Shane. This is why people have had bruises on their thighs from seatbelts when a plane drops a couple hundred feet in clear air turbulence because the plane goes down and any thing that's not secured down goes up and the seat belt causes the bruise because it presses on the thighs while keeping bodies in place. Aviation is so safe that people often forget about the worse case now but I've been injured during turbulence. I know flight attendants who have broken bones, gotten concusions, torn muscles, shoulders ankles knees. I know someone who was almost paralyzed by a non secured 250 pound galley serving cart. So it is not about airlines not caring about disabled people but because pilots, crew and airlines do care about the safety of you guys and everyone on board every flight. With that said I do think all planes should have a big enough cargo door for EVERY SINGLE type of wheelchair, but in the cabin no I don't think any heavy chair should go into it for the safety of you and everyone else on board during turbulence, take off and landing.
