Gozer the Traveler. He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!
*quickly blurts out "YES!!!"* I'm amused how it keeps gates and has a key(master) input, I'd buy this Zuul on the strength of their naming chops alone heheh
I use two or three noise gate simulations in my Line 6 Helix, both before and after the preamp section. I never thought a fully analog rig would ever be able to achieve digital tightness with just one unit. This is extremely impressive and wonderful.
I also have the ****** head, it's sure better than the ****** one, yet I want to try the ****** They say it's like the ******* but it costs less than the *******.
Oh hey, I learned something new today! Didn't know a gate in my fx loop would help with the extra amp noise, brb adding gates to all my Helix patches lol
I actually always put mine in the FX loop (having only one). You can make up for the "input tightness" a little with proper muting, you can't do ANYTHING about that infuriating amp noise.
Helix is great, just add a noise gate before the amp and the beginning of your fx loop for ultimate quiet. No messing with cables or buying extra pedals either! Just make sure it's the hard gate you're using.
This Demo of the zuul is probably the best out there. Only here I really understood how the key-input works and where to get a signal for it. Every other video also did not put the gain over 9000. Thanks ola!
OLA I came way back to see this, because I got interested in noise gates. Extra distortion and all of the gain, and the Zuul handles it. I never wanted a noise gate and now I'm looking at prices - thank you OLA you absolutely fuckin rock. Best noise gate demo ever.
Ola, I just bought this gate, it will be here Saturday. I am really a bass player but I’m now recording guitar. Your videos are very helpful. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Didn't the Boss NS2 can do this since years ? It have a key input like the Zuul but with the appropriate output so you don't need the extra output of the tuner or whatever. Just place the pedal chain with the preamp in the NS2 loop and there you go.
Yeah but the NS2 isn't really suitable for the effects loop, it changes the tone quite a bit. There's also the ISP G-String and a ton of other pedals that do this though.
Hmmm... what a simple yet clever idea, to control the gate from your guitar, but let it kill both stages of gain when gating. Damn you, Ola, that's ANOTHER thing on my ever-expanding "must have when I can afford it" list :O)
The ISP Decimator G-String II does the same thing, and you don't need anything to split the signal, because it has two full signal paths - one for the sensor, and one for the control. the sensor goes in front, the control goes in the loop. I have one, and I will never use another gate.
Not only this gate has a side chain, Boss NS-2 for example has it too. And you don't need another pedal (like tuner) with second output if you will use NS-2. So Zuul is cool but not "gate of the gates" in my opinion. Love this channel, thank you, Ola.
Why not the TC Electronics Sentry? That has more features and has editable frequency ranges. Plus it's half the price of this thing. This Zuul is even more expensive than Glen's Cock Blocker that just came out.
I wish you played a long sustained unison bend on high frets... this is the litmus test for noise gates as far as I'm concerned. Gated chugs are easy to get and the key input trick has existed for years, it's been done before... But I am more interested in how would this method work with those long decaying notes and at which point would it chop off the release altogether, or would it not do that. Y'know?
All the way back in the 90's I had my Boss stereo gate modified to exactly that - except one of the channels now works as cue/key straight from the guitar without needing an additional output from somewhere else. Seems I should have sold that idea...
with Randall basically going out of business, and Ola now selling his own guitars, perhaps he should also make signature amps with Fortin and finally release a 50watt Satan head via this new company.
Hello Ola. This is a very important question. Your answer could have a profound effect on my financial well being. Is your amp stock? Or, has Fortin been inside of it? Or, did Fortin build the thing himself? Please respond as soon as you can.
Ola couldn't find a tuner so he used a distortion pedal instead, and before recording the video he couldn't find a hair tie so he used what looks like possibly a sock instead of that. I like this "anything goes" sort of style that we've got going on here. XD
Why are noise gate pedals so complicated? I just want one that I can use before or after my pedals in from of the amp or only in the noise gate, not both - I don't want to have a bunch of cables running up and down my amp.
Did I notice ground hum when Ola turns guitar volume on at 5:53, 6:04 and 6:07? Strange his Solar guitars would have ground hum unless not soldered cleanly.
So if I use ridiculous amount of gain in my amp and setup the zuul the way Ola describes and the have the nice gated sound and when I change to clean channel I dont have to fiddle with zuul knob and it doesn't gate clean channel too much so it wont cut my cleans off? As it reacts to my guitar signal? (currently using NS2 in front and mooer noise gate copy in loop and that cut my cleans badly if I dont switch them off)
I paid 37.00 on amazon for this new Chinese made Noise gate & its incredible. No tonal change, just filters the hiss noise. Was gonna buy a Decimator as Ive had it before, Glad I bought this one for better than half the price. Best China made product Ive ever had.
Caline is the brand. Ive done 3 gigs with it so far, very satisfied with it. Does nothing special, except cut out that background hiss coming from my pedals. which is great
its a no brainer really. to be in full control of a fully cranked and saturated as fuck pedal chain into a clean amp would be my main application. would be sick in the studio too
I did this with my Boss NS-2 And peavey 5150 years ago! guitar too input, return(amp) too output(pedal), send(amp) too return(pedal), send(pedal) too input(amp).
I'm confused, do I need to have a separate pedal with 2 outputs to get the noise gate to work at it's best? If so, are there noise gates that don't need that so I don't have to buy an extra pedal?
I have a question : If your switch to a clean or a crunch channel did the zuul eat the signal of the guitar ? Like if you play softer.. Did we must turn it off
I use the ISP Decimator for the guitar noise and a cheap 25 EUR Noisegate for the preamp noise. Works great, but this pedal is also a great idea. It doesn't cut as smooth as I'd wish it would though
It's WAY smooth, and doesn't color your tone in the slightest. The ISP does to a ridiculous degree. Scott Ian from Anthrax heard ZUUL, and literally ripped 4 ISPs out of his rigs/backups, and went with ZUUL.
Awesome...not sure how to use the Key imput though. If I have a tuner, how do I hook it up? Guitar to Tuner. Zuul in loop....Tuner (2nd out) to Zuul key input?
Hey Ola, Thanks for the great and inspiring videos. I'm using some delay and reverb pedals in my effects loop, so I want to know where in the loop chain should I put this noise gate? Greetings from Iran
First of all sorry for my english, i have a question about the settings on my amplifier, my booster pedal and delay are always on in my fx loop, and I just want to turn them on when I'm playing solos, I activate this option pressing my footswitch effects, and if I want to play rhythm guitar I turn it down. When I activate the zuul to reduce the noise "it ruins" my setting preferences on the fx loop because if i want to reduce noise i have to turn my fx on. The point is what is the best option if I want to activate the boost and the delay effect just with one button? i was wondering if it was a good solution by connecting a loop pedal between the zuul out and amp return, thanks.
Awesome video Ola! "Question!" Would there be any advantages to running 2 of these (one in front, another in the loop) without using the key input on either???
The Decimator G string has the "key" built in. Also, sometimes you want two noisegates.. on in front and one in the loop to kill all hiss, because loops like in the 5150 bleed preamp hiss even when clamping the FX loop.
