Not the worst engine ever. The GM 230-292ci straight 6 had a job to do and did it. This one is just tired and poorly maintained. If it got freshened up and a better cam put in it'll go a hundred years ( although slowly ). The Brazilians race this platform on nitromethane and go 6's in the quarter.

You are pretty much correct. This engine has always been very poorly maintained.

The worst was the poor excuse for a diesel engine that Olds put in its cars around '82 or thereabouts. It was a gas V8 (350 CID) that was "transformed" into a "diesel" and was an unmitigated disaster. I know first hand - my Dad had one. A real WPOS. It finally froze up solid.

My Chevy 250 inline six had 183,000 miles on it when I sold the car. No problems. I took meticulous care of it though. It was so simple that any hamfisted clod could work on it. GM needs to bring that engine back!

Those old Chevy inline 6s were great reliable motors. Lot of Novas, Camaros and such, even a few Chevelle and full size came with them. Lot of them got yanked when someone wanted a V-8. That one is an example of being run to death and the odometer is easily on its second trip around. Oil changes may have been optional. These are nearly as durable as the 300 Ford.

These chevy straight sixes can run more than 65 years before an overhaul even the 216 splashers still run just dont drive them to the floor they use a 411 rear and a 4spd granny cruising speed around 50-55 MPH.

@BusterV8

There are actually only two generations of the Stovebolt engine. They were made between 1929-1962. I'm not sure about the exact year of this engine. Or what car it came out of, but it is a 70s engine.

I think those liked to have their cylinder head bolts retorqued once or twice in the engine's life. Otherwise if the filters were changed and kept topped up with decent oil it would often go 200,000. miles with just spark plug replacements and maybe a new distributer cap or two (don't remember if that one needed to have the distributor pulled out in order to change/adjust the points gap and condenser) maybe needs a timing chain/gear? (don't remember if the camshaft was driven by chain/sprocket or by a gear)

I firmly believe that whilst this is a poorly maintained long brick of combustion looks bad in the video, there are engines far worse that you will find in cars nowadays. Ford's european 3 cyl. Ecoboost and PSAs 1,2L 3 cyl. Both running with timing belts submerged in oil. Which disintegrates slowly, blocking up more and more of the oil feed causing low oil pressure and engine seizure. Or the I believe 4 cyl. turbo found in modern 1 series BMW and Minis. Being so bad that there isn't a clearly definable reason the engines die early but rather just about everything that can cause an early death is present on these. The last 1,6L diesel GM put into Opel Astras before selling Opel to PSA having its timing chain mounted in between engine and transmission with one of the chain guides consistently failing. Making it necessary to remove the entire engine and transmission for one, damn, chain guide. Sure these modern engines are quiet, fuel efficient, and powerful. But at what cost?

He keeps trying to fix it, but he's fixing the issue, he's not fixing what's causing the issues. He's treating the symptoms but ignoring the disease.
