Remember that the thumb is a guide . Don’t press down on it so hard when you’re playing , especially when performing barre chords . Use the whole arm by pulling inward to apply enough pressure when fretting
When i try to do this my thumb hurts like crazy, any tips for that? (I don't press with my thumb, i literally separate it from the guitar but it still hurts like crazy)
My tip for any intermediate guitarist is to try and start learning songs by ear as soon as possible, it might be really difficult in the beginning but it’s about the most useful skill in music in general and really helps you later on with your phrasing in your solos! If you’re getting the hang of it learning new songs start to get really really easy!
@@nejihyuga5914 the best way is to just get really comfortable with an easy and commonly used scale like the pentatonic scale, and then to just try and figure out solos by ear! First just find out in which key you are playing and then try to find the notes of the solo within the scale of that key.
@@niekvanwensen learning by ear will always land you on learning the intervals. When you learn a song by ear does not mean you need to find the exact key, just play the same intervals in any key.
@@nejihyuga5914 if im gonna be honest, i know very little about music theory, just play what your hearing and what sounds right. i've learned multiple polyphia, manuel gardner fernandes, and ichika just from what sounds right. another tip is learn music way above what level youre at and you'll improve really fast. hope this helps :D.. also learn music theory, be a better man than me.
RU-vid needs more beginner videos like this. Too many simply talk about which frets to put the fingers of the left hand on. As a long time player relearning the basics, the tip about about the lighter touch is a good reminder.
One Tip: Do not only learn songs! Learn also music theory, if you want to be able to play songs by improving (and sound like a pro) or not always want watch tutorials for be able to play a song you like.
The calluses are something that you build but can be less painful if you have a good guitar. Ask and investigate the action on the guitar. That is the height between the string and the neck. If it takes a lot of effort to press the string to get a clean, clear sound, do not get that guitar. You should be able to make a nice clean, clear sound without trying to push your fingers through the neck.
If you press to hard it will also break your strings and wear down your frets faster, especially if they are nickle silver and you are pressing too hard on the low strings.
Literally my biggest mistake ever on my electric guitar and bass guitars was pushing my whammy bar down way too far and then not bothering to fix the tuning after...it used to confuse me so much when my chords didn’t sound right 💀
Yes…. no But it’s something to be mindful of more than super practical advice. You can take faster showers at cooler temps, or if you reaaalllly wanted you could toss a plastic bag on your hand like you would if it was in a cast. You’ll eventually get callouses regardless but little things can make a big difference in how fast it happens
Other beginner tip, big mistake that I made: Make you sit straight up, comfortably more or less in the same position. You cannot train muscle memory of your body is in different positions all the time.
Don't get hung up on having fat or little or stubby or non stretchy fingers. There are ways around most problems. Learning on a well set up guitar is very important too.
D U D E ! The washing up thing ! ! I must have amassed at least one weeks crud around the flat .... My g/f got home from holiday , walked in the flat and went seven shades of Lady Ga-Ga at me ... 😲 " It's for my callouses / playing guitar ..." said I , lame - bleating "YOU DON'T OWN A GUITAR ! " she yelled back . I am now homeless Girlfriend- less and , strangely enough , guitarless ..... Go Figure
i cant find any good tutorials. When i look for them, they start with level1, level2, and then randomly jump to like level5 (if you know what i mean). Like they expect me to have previous knowledge on something i dont even know
And don’t forget: the plural of “tablature” is… tablature, not “tablatures. So it follows that the plural for the short form is just “tab”. Kinda like the plural of “vinyl” is “vinyl”.
"Open G" / Keith Richards uses a lot : Low E > D : A > G : D = D : G = G : B = B : High E > D where > means tune to , Google : Non Standard Guitar Tunings Good Luck
should i press toward the hifher side, lower side, or middle of the fret? the guitar does the thing where the strings vibrate and clash against the fret rather than wrap around it.
Try not to make loud squeaky noises when you change chords. It sounds terrible when you slide your fingers up or down the strings. Pick up the fingers from the strings and THEN slide your thumb on the back of the neck to the next chord.
Bruh... Just do normal daily things, stop fexing with "Ima gUiTaRiSt" stuff to avoid washing your dishes. Practise guitar until you can't touch strings anymore - then stop and repeat the same process next day. Your fingertips will adapt eventually.
LOL "real guitarists learn with tabs" and feeling bad about using yt tutorials is truly a generational gap between zoomers and millennials For us it was "real guitarists know how to read sheet music and play by ear" and we were feeling guilty for using tabs lol
Pressing and squeezing too hard on frets caused my forearm injury, which makes me reluctant to try again now the injury has finally healed after 6 months. Also, not knowing I should stretch my fingers and warm up properly did not help.
Well..at first im always excited to learn..to strum..learn chords..the CAGED strumming all that..then i get bored now i love finger picking style playing..more fun..classical guitar..
I have noticed everything on my very own xD But yeah, I don't care about my fingers, they are made of stone now 😅 Strummings? Yeah, practise them. From simple go to more complex, and end up with precise finger style like one 😊 Yeah, I am hand enjoyer, both hands were massacred by my playing 😂
biggest tip missing from here: please dry your hands after you wash them... when you go to play dont be getting the guitar wet, it hurts my soul and the guitar's
In contrast to the last one, over time, slowly start using your ear to figure out songs. Eventually, you'll build up the brain to figure songs out with hearing it a few times and some fiddiling. But certainly use both! As he said, free and easy, mine as well do it.
About leaving your guitar - yes, leaving your guitar out within easy reach is great, but keep in mind that humidity and temperature play important roles in the guitar’s performance and life.
I think that last tip is good but shouldn't be totally followed. I think especially with rhythm training e.g being able to get a strumming pattern down instantly is a necessary skill. Like some years ago when I was learning Everlong. The strumming pattern for that famous riff was kind of weird and the guy in the video was explaining it in detail. In the end I found it easier and more beneficial to just learn the strumming pattern by ear
"Change your guitar tuning!" Unless your first and only guitar has a Floyd Rose bridge, then you never want to change it because it's a nightmare. Beginner guitar tip, whammy bars are cool, but don't get one on your first guitar.
