Why are those idiots all laughing at him at the beginning? They should have been getting people to help him. Yes, I know the staff probably didn't help him because it was part of the show but the people could have at least asked somebody to help him.
Sometimes people laugh simply because something happens to be funny. A middleage guy on ice skates looking awkward isn't exactly an emergency situation: he is not dying out there, just struggling with the ice skates the same way that most people do. It'll be okay-- laughing doesn't always have to be interpreted as being a malicious act.
The worst ice skater at the rink surprises everyone when he transforms from a bumbling novice to an expert athlete. Watch our Winter Olympic-themed mission from 2011.
Steven Bowser You've never figured skated have you? I'd like to see you do forward crossovers, spiral, etc. IT ONLY looks easy coming from someone who is STILL learning.....
If it was a professional skater and I was a bystander... I would have been pretty pissed that they made me get off... I think the skill level of the one shown is a good one for the scene.
Daniel Fresquez Yea, I see what you mean. Like you would have felt like they forced you off to practice and show off. But I thought the point was going to be that he looked like a nobody _at first_ and then surprised everyone with his awesome skills. But he only _sort of_ surprised everyone by just being kindof good at it.
I hate complaining, but i hate how people were just laughing at him at the start. It made me feel horrible, imagine being in that guy's shoes (or skates) trying to get back to the edge while stuck in the middle falling down and stuff. I'm glad it's just a prank and he showed his skills off at the end though!
However, they actually couldn't have helped him. They were all supposed to stay off the rink, because it's meant to be cleared out... I'm not sure that they would be allowed on. A kind thought though. :)
Ok, just before you go comment something like "Why didn't they help, people are assholes! I would have helped!" I would like to note something, which might or might not make you reconsider your statement. First of all, the staff was included in this. The skater was also a skater, who had done this eight minute performance multiple times. This just seemed like a shorter version of his performance though. Since the staff was in this too, it also meant they didn't allow people to interrupt the performance, so even if people wanted to go and help, they couldn't. People maybe aren't as stupid as you think. Sure we could figure out this was fake, cause it's a video uploaded by imrov everywhere, but I'm sure that most of the people also figured it out, since he didn't go for the door, to get out. Music was most likely also playing, since music is playing under his other performances, and the fact that people first began clapping rather late, which also hints that music was playing during this performance. People were laughing simply cause it was entertaining. Just because you laugh doesn't mean you don't feel bad for the guy. Like when you see someone do something embarrassing, but also very funny, you'll most likely laugh too. It might not be the case for some kids, like it was also hinted in the video, since it looked like they were solely laughing at how bad he was, but not feeling any guilt/pity. There was most likely also people just hired to laugh and clap in the audience. That's common sense if you know improv everywhere well. It's a well known trick to use in the entertainment industry. You can even see the staff members laughing and cheering (and they were also a part of this) When people realized this was a performance, they could laugh as much as they want. Since you know it's someone, who wants you to laugh, by doing embarrassing stuff. It's also pretty rude not to enjoy a performance, when someone gives you one. If you still think the people are assholes for laughing, remember that most of the people shown laughing, were also cheering for him in the end. That cheering can indicate many things, such as "Great performance!", "Sorry for laughing, now you have my full respect" and stuff like that. So even if someone laughed cause they thought he was worse than them, he showed them how great he was, and made them look foolish for laughing, when they were far inferior. So if they're assholes for laughing at him, he's also a bit of an asshole for making them feel inferior and foolish. I don't think the people, who laughed were assholes though, so I don't agree with that last statement.
Helen Tran With the new youtube layout, you can give a more detailed explanation ^^ When you're trying to prove a point, long comments should be common in my opinion.
I'm good at ice skating. But I'm not a pro. The people just laughed at him. Either because of his weight, lack of ice skating knowledge, or age. I can do spins and tricks, but no one deserves to be laughed at. If you were like him, but it wasn't a prank and everyone laughed at you, I bet you would feel sad, ashamed, disappointed, or even upset, but even if this video was a prank, those people should feel upset for laughing at him and not helping him. They should have helped him the second he fell. That's my opinion, may I hear anyone else's?
Cecilia Hadley the workers were in on the whole thing so they didn't have the right to help him....the people tho had no idea so they were kinda of assholes for laughing at him and they obviously couldn't help him cuz they didn't have the right to go in.
I Know this video is over 6yrs old, but to this day i still love it, I think a lot of people are missing the point to this video, it shows we all start off like this we all have those people watching and laughing and so on, I think point is no matter who is watching you can improve and get better at anything if you work at it. This video brings me a lot of inspiration to try new things and not to be so concern about what other people think of me when i try something new, at least i am trying!
Guys, please It's a psychological reaction that people laugh when worried And plus the people can't do anything else but watch since the guys that work there wouldn't allow them to enter
Well, it's a good thing he was acting because not one face showed sympathy for what was supposed to be an embarrassing situation. They were _all_ laughing at the poor guy. Sad society we live in.
.... I went ice skating today.... I am for sure the worlds best ice skater! :D ...I fell, cried and people laughed... I really hurt my tailbone... Thank you God for "talents" ;-;
Well. I feel bad for you. I ice skated 2 years ago. At first day I was walking like penguin, and many times falled on butt. But I was okay. And the second day I broke my left arm.
I'm like 10 years late for this, but you know what would've been very cool? He's wife comes out of nowhere and yells in distress: "ROB!". Then she skates out to help him, they kiss and start dancing to waltz music! ^_^
i made a comment years ago on this video saying how heartless americans are but now that i lived among them i can tell you they're just like any other nation there's the good and the bad,and from what i've seen so far, more good than bad.
We always appreciate that. I notice a lot of foreigners who come to the US will make note of how open, friendly, and optimistic Americans are. I think we should really take pride in that. The US is also a huge country and has several different cultural calling cards from the East Coast, Midwest, South, Pacific Northwest, and Southwest. So, you'll find a lot of diversity on how people behave that is hard to assign to everyone, and we sure have our share of pricks, too. Still, I count myself very fortunate to be from here, but I always love getting out and seeing the world and picking the brains of an outsiders perspective. Cheers!
I think it is moving because of the detail. His awkward movements, size, bulky sweater and black pants covered with white ice from falling all scream struggling skater. Your best hope is he'll make the rail before needing a stretcher. Instead he brushes the ice off his pants to become the picture perfect skater. Seeing one so exceed your best hope is very touching.
This was an ITNY (Ice Theatre of NY) exhibition program; it's listed in the information. This skater, a friend, passed away yesterday. Rest in Peace dear Kenny.
Kyle Hartl LOL! Fire bender, water bender, air bender, earth bender. Everything changed when the fire nation attacked. hahahahaha **I actually know what you mean by "bender".
Bitch how bout you do it first,oh wait, you fucking can't.Triple toe loops are an extremelt advanced and difficult skill that even advanced skaters find extremely hard to reach.
Rewatching this video again years later I still feel bad. It may have been just how the video was edited but people pointing and laughing and mocking him sucked to see. I hope they felt some shame after he turned out to be better then all of them.
they should have gotten a pro-skater to mess up and make mistakes in the beginning (like the guy in this video) but then gradually be able to do spins and flips and tricks. People would be like O.O
Nobody helped the guy? Yes Can we see the people smiles and laughing? Yes Did they appreciate his talent at the end? Yes is everyone happy? Yes lets leave it that way guys and just smile ;)
You say the worst ice skater? I say the worst staff not going over there to help that poor man making a fool of himself. Now I did watch to the end of the video but if this was real someone should really help that poor man.
