I agree with you Raimo. I also admit that I fail to see how exactly it was as bad of acting as people think it is. He was given a dialogue and he did a great job with it. After all point of art is not to please the masses.
I waited several respectful minutes before coming over for a dose of these acting chops. But, let's be realistic -- what could ANYBODY do with that line? As it stands, it will be remembered for generations, so let's laugh WITH him, and not AT him.

He maybe was on his way to the beach anyway and had his letter in his pocket for reading it later. Or he may just have forgotten the letter in his pocket and found it when he was walking on the beach. Eveything can be the reason for him reading the letter on the beach.
RIP to Ryan O'Neal. I mostly know him from this scene, and it brings me constant joy. I also acknowledge that he has had other roles that were meaningful to people so blessings to him for that, and best wishes for his friends and family. This scene will continue to make me smile for years to come.

I don't know why the title says worst line reading ever. This is the most in depth realistic way to read a note. I always venture to the nearest beach in my business suit to read letters.

the director sat right then and there, carefully arranging the cameras, the delivery of the actor, saying "cut" with total satisfaction and then spends hours editing just so we can get this scene

About 2/3rds of the way through watching Barry Lyndon for the first time it dawned on me that Ryan O'Neal looked a lot like the actor from the "oh god, oh man" scene I'd seen held up as an example of bad acting on RU-vid. At the end of BL I came back to this video and I was right. I was kind of shocked as I always had assumed this was some B-movie nobody, but there he had been 12 years earlier in one of the greatest films ever made. RIP Ryan O'Neal. you will always be Redmond to me.

It's pretty deep if you think about it. The writer of the story implementated a sublimilal message where he discusses about the existence of god. Or was god created by man? Is God the creator of man or man the creator of god. That's shown in this scene. The spinning shows his confusion because of this question followed by dramatic dissonant music. A Masterpiece oh god.
