Worst roof ever installed - leaking vent pipe collar repair. It looks like someone tried to do a pipe collar repair previously. Just a few minutes into the repair it was obvious they didn't know what they were doing!
It appeared they cut shingle short and just tucked them under the next shingle. We removed the plastic pipe boot to install an aluminum one as well as installed a pipe vent cap. please hit the thumbs up button and subscribe to the Grand Roofing channel, so you don't miss another video.

My replacement roof has now been done for over a year. Everything from soffits up was replaced. It looks great and has held up great. Wish my experience with my contractor was 100%, but it wasn’t. They mismanaged my job so badly (ex. did not cover exposed part of my roof and thunderstorm happened, drenching my home inside. I told them multiple times a day for a week the storm was forecast). After months of hassling and arguing, all was finally made right! As with most things in life, finding an excellent contractor is way harder than it should be.

Really great job man. You definitely know your shit. I do this exact same thing for a living in CA where it's over 100 for many days out of the summer. My dad and brother would always tell me, "There's alot of bad roofers out there." Those guys likely used the shingle-tops for the starter, and then used the remainder for some other area, like that pipe flashing. Looking forward to more repair videos, keep it up brother

This is a sound repair. Being an architectural sheet metal worker ive come across plenty of botched flashing jobs by roofers and carpenters. No drip edges, lack of stripping flashing in, exposed screws in valley flashing, lack of a proper metal cricket or shingle. Step flashing done wrong. Exposed faced nails in shingles and so on. Glad to see someone sticking to his trade doing what he knows best 👍

Just liked and subscribed. Good work young man. I did construction for years. My roofing days are over. I used to get sucked into 6 or so roofing jobs per year helping friends and family. Small crew usually multiple days per roof job. Quality not speed should be the focus. I was taught by old timers and grew on my own with the newer methods and products introduced to the craft. I don't know many roofers who have to go to the gym.

As much as I hate to admit it, I got tired of replacing neoprene boots all the time. We all know that they only last 5 to 10 years before UV damage makes them split. So I started doing one of two things, convince the homeowner to upgrade to lead boots, or just slap a repair collar on it and be done. I saw no reason to pull shingles to only put another crappy neoprene boot back on it. Probably just me being lazy, but the result was exactly the same.
@Beandiptheredneck

Plastic boots on almost every roof I’ve ever torn off, very rarely were they leaking and if they were the roof was past it’s lifespan anyways
@georgegroot9704
@georgegroot9704 3 года назад
@@Beandiptheredneck I assume you are in Canada. I would think the UV degradation you all would see there would be quite a bit less than we see in Kentucky. I've also seen a huge difference in longevity in neoprene boots depending on manufacturers. I can tell you that I've torn off many neo boots that were still in good shape. But in my area, I've seen more that had failed in 10 years or less. Just my observation.
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 3 года назад
This wasn't leaking because of it being plastic or neoprene. The leak was actually because somebody did a horrible job installing shingles around it. They simply cut part of the headlap of and tucked it up under the next shingle just a little bit.
@georgegroot9704
@georgegroot9704 3 года назад
@@GrandRoofingInc I have seen that a lot too. No attention to detail. The last crew I ran had standing orders to not cover up a flashing or boot till I had looked at it. A sad as that sounds, it kept my warranty work to almost zero. Of course I still had a few issues, like an idiot who bounced a nail gun against a poly double bubble skylight and shot a nail right into the corner🙄

I know this is an older video but I wanted to add to your install, usually here in Minnesota we would put ice shield around the pipe and when installing the flange caulk under on the sides and top never the bottom then on top of flange caulk sides and top to hold shingles down and help keep water from infiltrating under the roofing.

I did roofing and siding when I was younger, I dabbled in a few trades before I settled on carpentry. I've been working for myself as a handyman and I want to get back to working for someone else and with a crew again. I saw an ad looking for a journeyman roofer with commercial experience, that's not me but I applied anyways, I'm a journeyman carpenter with roofing experience, but mostly residential. Well, I didn't get the job, but I did find out that position paid $65 an hour. (It's a traveling job so per diem too) So I just landed a job as a traveling roofing laborer with a commercial roofing company. I'm going to get that commercial experience !!! And in 6 months to a year I should be pulling down that $65. 🤑

Leaking vent stack boots at the pipe/boot junction... I've encountered this on numerous homes with roofs near the end of their useful lives. So, I just get a new rubber boot and slip it over the pipe bringing it down to within a few inches of the old one like an umbrella. The homeowners can have all the vent stack boots replaced when they get around to replacing the roof. I can't tell you how happy folks are when you give them a perfectly functional stop-gap solution at pennies on the dollar compared to other repair estimates. Of course, if the leak is at the roof deck level, some exploratory surgery and repair will be necessary.

Truth. Unfortunate in our area, housing prices have skyrocketed in the last 2 years. Some properties have more than doubled. New housing is also going up like weeds in a ditch. You can't even buy a 2x4 at the hardware store anymore. Banks dont care if its a quality roof, it just needs a roof. Even the quality roofers are just slapping them on as fast as they can find guys to swing hammers. We had a roof put on and had to finish it ourselves. 5 month wait and they couldn't come back for the finishing because they were already off to the next job. We consider ourselves lucky as they at least left the uninstalled materials.
