Another great video. As a 13 yr Home Inspector, I enjoy your videos as entertainment and knowledge building. With the controversial topics like paper under or over the drip edge, drip edge or gutter apron, roll flashing verse step, etc., I like having good and sound advice from someone who I personally feel has the experience and expertise. Thank you for providing awesome content sir.
WOW! I'm thankful I learned the ropes in the 70s and 80s from framing to roofing and electrical. I do most of my home improvements because of the substandard work I often see.
Brian, great video. No argument felt, ice water, synthetic paper always over drip edge on the bottom. Over on the rake. Go back to how water flows. Like I said, there is no argument. It's a no-brainer, just like flashing you don't run it backward. No one will change my mind.
As for what to do…. You were able to identify within minutes of a cursory examination what can only be described as gross negligence in terms of installation. I can only imagine that you would undoubtedly find more issues upon closer inspection. Not addressing all of the issues will only result in additional damage in the not too distant future. Bite the bullet and rip it all off and do it right. In the long run, it’s the right thing to do and probably the least expensive. Nice video… Learning a lot about roofing.
I did a backwards walk to photograph some building damage. I fell flat on my back and hit the sidewalk with my head. I got a concussion and had a headache for a month. Never walk backwards is the best damn advice you could get someone.
It amazes me how many things I learn from your videos. Most of the issues are lack of common sense. Just because you have a drivers license, doesn't mean you can drive. Same applies to roofers or any trade, anybody can do it but can they do it right?
I am a homeowner in need of a roof replacement and this video is what scares me about roofing contractors. BTW, I found your channel awhile back while searching for chimney flashing installation. You have made a very good impression on me.
Find a roofing contractor that does roofs only and have a long history of business. That way you can look up if they had any bad reviews over their work.Always remember under lament and roof edging is just as important as the actual shingle itself. In this video it looks like inexperience was the main factor. If you need any advice I can help.
Smart idea not filing a claim, adjuster is going to warrant repair of a few shingles and not touch anything else, especially since the roof is 4-5 years old theres no arguement for non repairablility factors other than the poor install, installation errors are usually not coveraged at all
Just had my roof done i geuss you would love the pictures i got of it its terrible. Im not a roofer by any means but i can look at the work that was done nd tell its a shit job. Trying to get the roof companys insurance to pay for damages now. Watching this video shows me what else to look for
Total botch job. Really feel for the owner but there is a massive amount of work just trying to get a starter strip in there! Maybe insert soakers to save money but that’s a temporary fix Maybe try lowering the gutter as it looks like the drip edge is being driven up by the gutter and forming that negative slope Flat roof? Nail it down along the compromised seams and install a 10” patch along entire length Pull the shingles at the top of the flat roof and bond another 6-8” of rubber and re install shingles Lot of work I hear your frustration Brian Keep your head up and happy new year
I know it's expensive but I would want the whole thing replaced. BTW, have you ever shown a video after you have completed the repair? Ex. A before and after type thing.
New roofs are expensive ,It sucks that four years in and this guy is looking at needing another one.I find your videos entertaining and informative. would love to see the ending to some of these stories, did they hire you to fix them ? did they sue the contractor etc, etc Happy New year
Carefully fix all around starter shingle area, re do step flashing areas, redo rubber roof, repair areas where joints are on top of each other, fix areas where bad.
Maybe take care of the low slope roof, and any obvious repairs. No problem if he wants the rest of the roof replaced later. But what if there's some unseen leaks on those poor eave installations, that could lead to more damage in the meantime? Happy New Years! Enjoying the videos. Yeah, I'm that nerd.
Yes everywhere on the bottom where the starter rows are missing will eventually start leaking. Once the water starts getting in It will more than likely rot more than just the decking. Like raftertail's and fascia boards. On the front where the ladder was set up the soffit was sloping down back to the house. The owner stated water was already flowing back into the garage header, which over time will cause serious damage.
I did my own roofing. The chimey leaked a bit. At the time, there weren't any videos on how to do it. I could have read some books. But, l felt just going over the top of the previous roof was adequate. Now, the roofers I hired for additions and roof ridge vent. Everything leaks. I feel better about my first time.
We get a lot of calls up here to do repairs on roofs that really need to be replaced. The problem is that the cost of roofing has escalated so badly in Canada that a lot of people just can't afford it.
Anytime you have a new roof installed check to make sure your contractor is licensed and insured that way you can hold him accountable if the job fails to hold up is improperly nailed leaks or blows off due to faulty installation.
Put some starters in where the shingles meet the rubber and nail everything down, replace the broken shingles and put a little caulking under them to hold. Tell them it's not a repair but a quick fix and give them the options of what actually needs to be done.
WE HAD A FAMILY ROOFING BUISNESS FOR FORTY YEARS IM RETIRED NOW BUT I SEEN A LOT OF THIS OVER THE YEARS I DO MISS WORKING IM JUST WORN OUT THOMPSON ROOFING.
I used to do shingle roof and lots of rubber roofs and I have never seen such horrible work ever! It’s a shame this homeowner had this done to them. They probably charged them top dollar for this crap work
We have performed roof repairs for years , this is all common things that these roofers do . Home owners to need to not just worry about the price of the install but also consider having the proposals written out with steps on how the job will be done and materials used . Alot of guys skimp out on materials to save cost and pocket material. And homeowners are just looking to get a cheap roof which innturn costs double the price overtime. Especially when you have to call someone out to repair multiple areas of the roof or completely replace the roof.
Replacement of rubber roof. And starters. Repair all vent caps. Take apart roof to wall and so them right. Now you will have a new reroof in the future. Because you fixed his problem roof.
On the EPDM if you are going over another system such as rubber, mod bit, torch down. tpo etc you need to slice the bottom roof up(cutting giant X's throughout the field) or you will create a vapor barrier between the roofs and you will have condensation between layers. Other than that if you could get everything to dry under the epdm you could salvage that by cover taping the seams adding about 20'' at the top then the shingles, Uncured/elastoform on the pipe with a clamp. However that roof underneath most likely wasnt sliced to eliminate the vapor barrier issue so you probably wouldnt be doing them any favors by trying to salvage. I see that bottom shingle gulley all the time and it can be a combination of not notching your drip edge around the gutter hangers, not bending your drip with the pitch and sometimes facia too high which in this case will be not notching around hangers. They are probably looking at significant rafter tail facia and soffit damage especially the part where your ladder is. Pretty decent video man
The shingles were bad enough. As a mostly commercial guy the EPDM made me puke. My dad and I just did a non insulated EPDM low slope section on the back of his house (glued over the rubber he put on 27 years ago he got for cheap when he worked for Carlisle). Everything is detailed out with correct adhesives and accessories like a commercial job. Tie-ins to the steeper areas can get a little tricky but you aren’t a hack and can solve a multi-step problem you can figure it out. That whole roof needs to hit a dumpster.
I've got a bad roof install, however by sheer luck water isn't getting in at least as far as I can tell for the 7 years I have had this roof, improperly flashed chimney, step flashing not properly stepped etc but my install seems top notch compared to the shit you post on here lol.
It's always tough in these situations. I'd advise to reroof. But still do the fixes if they can't afford it. I've had some oldies where the deal has ended up, I'll knock 10% off all your calls, but I won't do warranty on any of the work. Not because I'm doing shit work, but because I can fix a leak, a new one pops up 5 inches away and I'm on the hook for that one as a warranty job. I'm straight with them too, keep this arrangement for 5 years and it could end up costing you more than a whole new roof. But my town is full of retirees, many of them living off pensions, or worse savings that are being eaten by inflation. Often a few more years is all they need, then the roof can be the kids issue.
I usually hate "nit pic" contractor videos, this was not one of them, I have done 2 whole roofs in my life, and I know about a starter course and step flashing, those are not "gold plating" a job, those are just how its done, The person who did that roof was a hack, just did not know what they were doing,
Happy New year. Only claim probably would be with the contractor. Probably have to sue. I would think they could in small claims at least . For not installing with in the manufacture instructions. Seems like fraud. They knew they didn’t do a good job. Or should have known. At least they would get something. That whole thing would have to be reroofed mostly because of what we have seen. Wouldn’t want your name associated with half that job. But maybe home owner can only afford part of job. Sad. Great videos.
That's is surely a bad one. No bandaid big enough. Looked like no water and ice. Just modified roofers felt. That pitch is low for shingles in the first place. Hire a carpenter to roof your house. They know the right way. Most won't do them.
Go after the contractors bond. Report him to the contractors state license board and file a complaint. Ask the contractors state license board what else you can do to go after the contractor to get your money back and put him out of business. Also ask them what else you can do to get it done correctly and how to choose the correct licensed, bonded and insured contractor to do the job. Ask about how to or what to look for in the contract before you sign. That's very important. See if you can report the contractor to the better business bureau. Sue his ass and don't hold back at all. If you just let your insurance company know than all they will do is take your deductible and send you a check for probably less than the amount that it will actually cost to replace your roof. They probably won't go after the contractor and just pay you out but short change you in the process like they always do. Then they will jack up your rates.
Hey man! I just opened my own Llc. Been watching your videos religiously. Also based out of Indiana, would love to get in touch with ya and see if you’d be open to mentoring me a bit
Step flashing is a hundred times better and a lot less maintenance. Torch down works a lot better and last longer, and they run the rubber roof vertical instead of laughing it up the roof which is wrong. The pipe should have been sleeved with lead boots.
I bet there's no starter on the bottom rows .Yep ridge cap run the wrong direction to always install your ridge cap away from me incoming wind in most cases away from the Northeast wind. Six to eight inches offset and you can scare step the shingles that's on the manufacturing package. Otherwise you void the warranty. 47 years is a professional roofer I've seen the very same thing on jobs I was asked to look at. Majority of time the people are in too big of a hurry to do the job right get in get out get paid. No quality in the work nowadays why I'm now retired. Your nail pattern should be six nails for shingle in the tire strips where the two shingles or laminated together. Many guys don't put the nails where they belong so the shingles blow off in a storm.
Majority of the time roofs like this are done and never inspected so the bad roof job is not known about. Many of these contractors will do a job like this on a weekend to avoid inspectors. Shabby workmanship. The homeowners should take the roofer to court and sue him and force him to fix the roof and Amy damages it has caused.
Great videos! A couple comments: I noticed you removed your string from your hoodie. Good call. Huge safety issue!! Do you run into problems of cold weather roofing in which the nails blast through the shingle?? I'm just curious if this is a real issue you face, or is it more of a non-issue. I had to do a minor roof repair on a 5 year old roof in which I could see this was the only reason for failure. Also is that synthetic underlayment woven? That just doesn't seem to be a good idea... woven waterproofing is weak!
I did not remove the string, it eventually came out on its own. I do know they can be very dangerous depending on what I'm doing. As far as the cold weather and nails blowing through the fiberglass met, definitely! We slow down and try not to do any new installs throughout the cold Winter months, unless it's in really bad shape leaking or an emergency.
In addition to glueing the roof down there needs to be plates and screws at the penetrations before a witch hat is put on. Overall that’s a terrible job and stuff like that is why I stay in business!
I understand everyone wants to save money, but this is the perfect example of cheapest isn't always better. Also should have done their homework on the contractor. This contractor definitely gives roofers a bad name.
Man these people got ripped off. The install is absolute trash…garbage shingles as well if you’re unsealing them with a slight lift with 1 finger after only 4 years. Definitely needs completely stripped
In my humble opinion if you have homeowners insurance and you pay religiously it should be no questions asked on a roof replacement. If it is a structural need of the home and you are on top of payments and have been a valuable customer pumping into their coffers for multiple years or even decades I believe you should be able to call them up and just order a roof like you're ordering a pizza..
Not sure I understand, what good is a labor warranty if you have a claim and the insurance company denies because install was not correct? Does the labor warranty cover the cost of that same company which did it incorrectly to come and install again after you pay for new shingles since your insurance company denied claim OR is a labor warranty paid by company that installed incorrectly back to you and then you use that money to hire new company to install shingles which you had to buy again because once again insurance company denied your claim? Hope that made sense
Replace the rubber roof , add in foam board , run it the right way . Honestly your better off replacing the entire roof at this point . Rip it off , step flash , run you starters , ice and water barrier andb30 lb felt. Then you'll have a good long lasting roof as long as you don't have some crackhead up there with a nail gun installing it .
WOW!!! Too bad homeowner got ripped off!!! Some people should not do roofing!!! Looks like homeowner wanted to save some money. Bad choice. If he was smart, he would pay you to redo it the right way.
No starter coarse......hmmm. It’s baffling how people that do this can feel good about what they did,or didn’t do🙄. I would start by removing the old roof, proper insulation.....etc..etc..I think if you try to repair the roof your going to b chasing a problem .....jmpo.
