This roof was a pretty bad install from the get go. It's up there in the list of the worst roof job ever. Roofing over an old roof is never a good idea!

On a serious note, yes the worst roof ever category is solid. It's educationally entertaining. I constantly learn from your videos and this is no exception! I was trained to use 3 tab for ridges and never thought about the lower warranty/quality aspect. 7-10% every couple of months is theft. It's an industry money grab by greedy corporate executives that know where the future of the market is headed. We all have to raise our prices to meet the inflation demands, just to remain profitable, but if multiple supply manufacturing companies are raising their rates that much, in lock step, there's a collusion at work, which is illegal (Section 1 Sherman Act) and only further crushes the working man

Looking at the length of the nail you picked up, I am surprised the "new roof" hasn't blown off.

wow! 3 layers! Seeing those dips in the roof, there is some questionable decking on those that needs to be addressed and replaced. Strip it all replace the decking needing which seems like a good bit. New vents, Boots etc.. I understand people trying to save a buck, but in the long run you do get what you pay for.

BEFORE YOU WATCH THIS VIDEO: Get a couple of bottles of strong whisky and a shot glass. Every time you hear Brian say "pop" or "popped" pause the video, fill the shot glass and slam it, then proceed. If you can make it 3 minutes in, you're a real trooper. If you can make it 5 minutes in, you need help. If you can make it to the end of the video without dying or being rushed to the ER, you deserve your liver will fail in a week. This video just popped up on my phone like 30% of the nails on that roof This belongs in the pop culture category. 😮‍💨

I was always taught 2 layers and it's tear off time when it comes time to lay the 3rd. There's a few obvious reasons but, one of the biggest I was always taught is Shingles are Heavy and once you get that second layer on there you now have twice the weight on that roof system that it was framed and made for. Going 3 Times the weight can way more than exceed the structure and combined with Damage to the Wood underneath you have never seen because its never been inspected in 50-60+ years, you could easily have a roof cave in on a family and kill people. It's as irresponsible and dangerous as it is unethical and poor workmanship. Also 90% of those nail pops are because if your roofing over other layers especially going with a 3rd you must use much longer nails to even try to hit wood. But, most people wont even used longer nails when roofing over a single layer which can still cause this issue. Guarantee you can grab and rip off most of the roof by hand buy just pulling and rolling it and drop the entire side of the roof on the trailer because the nails are not even hitting wood at all. I've seen single layer roofs done with nail guns that tear off like that because they don't use the right nails or set the regulators incorrectly for adequate air pressure either too high and blasting through the shingles or too low and not penetrating the wood deck. Thus why some companies wont even use nail guns at all and still today hand nail everything. That nail you picked up at 4:01 proves my point, That nail "Maybe" just long enough for a second layer but, definitely not a 3rd layer. Also those valleys I was taught to weave those instead of those straight cuts but, I also never hear of "California Valleys out here on the east coast but, understand I got out of roofing 25 years ago and got into welding and machining and never looked back so things have probably changed since then.

It’s a real shame because the top layer is way prematurely needing replacement. All the millions of nails popping through and loose shingles all because it’s three layers when the should have did a complete tear off down to the sheathing.

I heard about the price increase yesterday. I had my roof replaced 2 weeks ago. The old roof could have lasted another 5 years but I decided to do it now because it would not be as inexpensive as today. I am not sure if the workers did the best job but I am satisfied with the job they did. They did a much better job than I could have done. 30 year manufacturer warranty. If the roofer goes bankrupt, the manufacturer will send another roofer to fix issues. I looked on the roof when they were just starting the shingles and noticed tar paper short on a couple of spots. It was over a lean to for lawn equipment storage so I am not worried about that area. I am believing the starter layer covered those spots. The counter flashing on the chimney was not done as I expected but the owners' explanation was reasonable. Not what I wanted to hear. They do not cut bricks because they do not know the condition of the brickwork and do not want the liability of causing more damage. If it comes to it, I will install counter flashing the way I want over their counter flashing and caulk.... All in all, the roof looks great. I will be in the attic the next week during steady rains checking for leaks!

@corvettebob96

They installed edge vents on the lower part of the deck. The kitchen fan is from the 1960s. It works but not sure if I want to use it often.... Verbally, I was told by one of the owners that a bathroom vent would be installed. After they shingled that area of the roof, I checked the contract. Bathroom vent wasn't included. I called the owner and he promised that he would come back in a few weeks and install a vent for the bathroom. 1800sgft roof. The shingles were just starting to lose the sand on the edges of the shingles, the chimney flashing was a bucket of tar mess peeling from the brick and nails were lifting up in about 10 spots. The chimney was the only spot noticeably leaking. I am happy with the job they did.

No but fr who’s hiring these “roofers” homeowners blame the hacks for messing up there’s roofs but you hired them ? First red flag was them telling you that they were going to shingle over two layers of shingles already 😂

when houses start colapsing cause all that weight on the roof, there is going to be laws that will affect good workers, house owner should teach some roofers when two layers of shingles is enough, i prefer just one layer so osb can breath and last longer

the roof is 100% shot at 3 layers. The added weight that shouldn't be there, the waves in the shingles, nail pops. 2 layers you can get by, but you go 3 that's asking for issues.

When I started roofing about 34 years ago, code actually allowed 3 layers, which was later changed to 2 layers but for a roof with that low of a pitch, not sure where it's located but if it's in an area that gets a lot of snow in there winter, man that 4/12 pitch ( just guessing) but that thing is gonna hold a lot of weight in snow, definitely wanna make sure you've got sufficient sheathing strength, and definitely do not put 3 layers of shingles.

Like you said ...... it should last 30 years....... fix the nail heads poping out and move on....... they likely saved thousands to pay for other stuff they needed......... not everyone can afford a perfect roof..... there are lots of good roof repair guys out there that can keep this roof going for decades ........ its called the payment plan , not interest. I would be glad to inspect one of your roofs some time ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Going through a three-way mess over my elderly mother's roof. She had some leaks form around box vents and her bathroom vent causing prolonged water damage to the ceiling. The leak around the toilet vent is causing extensive damage between a bedroom closet wall and the bathroom wall.. a friend of hers from church came over with a roofer one afternoon and the roofer said he would do nothing less than a full roof replacement. Once the price was shot out to my mother she clearly told them she did not have that kind of money so its a no go. He offered to patch a few spots on the roof for $1500 and even at that price she told the roofer that she did not have the money to move forward with anything at this time. When the roofer and the church friend left my mother's house that afternoon the church friend calls the roofer and tells him to begin the job the next day if possible without any direction from my mother whatsoever. For an "emergency patch" they covered the entire rear slope of the house with galvanized metal and are now expecting $1500 from my mother when there was no written or verbal contract with her. The church friend is saying he never told the roofer to go forward with the work and now has nothing to do with it even though I've heard the roofer claim the church friend was the only one that told him to start this job. I've heard it from the roofers mouth that my mother never instructed or initiated any bit of work. She's terrified now that they are going to take her to court but I honestly believe that they may try but it will not be victorious because it's a three-way he said, he said she said but the only testimony that could be given under oath would be that the church friend and the roofer had the verbal agreement, not my mother in any way. Please forgive the rambling and misplaced punctuation as I am using speech to text and get a little flustered when I speak of this.. she has been on the phone with her homeowners insurance company and they are claiming they will replace the whole roof in asphalt shingles but the metal paneling must be removed first and the $1,000 deductible must be paid but even coming up with that at this point is far fetched. It's rough times financially around here.

So the chimney is blatantly obvious but the fact that I can see raised up places on that roof behind you at the start of the video before you even started walking the roof is pretty bad. Three Layers of shingles? How many times have you yourself said that's not the smartest idea it's literally in the video's description "Never a good idea". The no tucking under the pipe boot NOGO. Only a not so good roofer would actually make slash marks in the shingle below when preping 3-tabs for H&R and then leave it like that. That roof just needs to be striped down to the decking and rotten pieces need to be replaced and it needs a beautiful new roof installed right. Love the worst roof ever videos keep them coming!

It's actually a 3/12 slope and a 1/4 pitch. Just sayin'. It's a very common mistake confusing pitch with slope. Slope is the rise and run of a roof expressed as a fixed unit for run (12" for imperial units and 300mm for metric units). Pitch is a ratio, for example a 4/12 slope roof is a 1/3 pitch, 3/12 slope = 1/4 pitch, 6/12 slope = 1/2 pitch.
