The saddest thing is that somewhere there's a couple of programmers who thought they'd landed a gig in game development for a new console, who had this conversation shortly after getting hired: "So, we need you to develop games for Sega Genesis hardware." "You want us to make a Genesis game?" "No, not *a* game, games, plural." "How many are we talking? Two, three?" "Forty." "Forty??? How many years do we have to get them all out?" "You have three weeks. Go."

Sega totally redeemed themselves when they decided to contract M2 to develop the Genesis Mini. The difference is night and day

Just so you know, SEGA cut these bastards off. The Genesis Mini is an OFFICIAL SEGA HARDWARE PRODUCT, the FIRST since the Dreamcast. I’m so proud of them.

It’s sad to think that this console was my first ever exposure to Sega Genesis games. As a young kid I thought this was what these games really played like, and the awful sound emulation actually scared me because it was so loud and uncanny. So thanks for giving me nightmares, AtGames!

I got an Atari Retro Flashback from AtGames, and even though the company has had some bad ones (like this one), the Atari Retro Flashback is actually _really_ good! Games run smoothly, has HDMI support, and the wireless controllers that come with the console *_ACTUALLY WORK!_* I think that AtGames should stick with the retro consoles pre-NES, because they _clearly_ don't know how to handle more than 8-bit games.

I got one of these for Christmas quite awhile back. I was very disappointed but marveled at how horrible it was, and, the next week, when I brought my friend over to see it, it stopped working completely.

I was tempted to pick this up at the Family Dollar for $40. Thank goodness I passed on it. Eventually picked up a Sega Genesis Mini and had zero regrets.

I fell victim to this console for Christmas that one year. I wanted an actual Sega Genesis, but I got this instead. It was unfortunate, because I never got an actual Genesis experience. You're better off buying the real thing. Even if you tried to put the Genesis cartridges in there, you would've had the risk of damaging them. I wouldn't take any chances.

At least Sega released a Genesis mini without AtGames getting there grubby fingers on it

I actually got this for Christmas one year, and I was really excited. After putting in 2 or 3 carts to the cartridge slot, I left it alone for a night. The next morning, gone. Dead. Wouldn't turn on. Was one of my worst experiences with a product I can recall.

The ONLY reason I could see for the lack of stereo audio output is that the original Genesis came with a cable with only yellow and white and ATGames was like "Why should we do better?" (I used the headphone jack for sound instead as a kid since that WAS stereo). But in this day and age, it's inexcusable. I didn't know anything about this system until Sega announced their mini, so thanks for covering it!

there's actually a musical term for what's happening with the music on this system -- polytonality: playing one or more parts of a song in different keys. here's the thing, though. composers who use this technique are usually trying to create a certain effect by doing it intentionally. AtGames created the effect through sheer incompetence

Using IR for a wireless controller is such a bad idea, the receiver end is waiting for a whole burst of infrared LED strobes before it even acts. I don't think I've ever used a responsive channel changer either lol

I got this as a kid with 2 cheap wired controllers. I had a sleep over with my friends and we played golden axe all night. So yes it is bad, but I have good memories of it lol.

I had this system. Biggest complaint was the controllers. There was lag that made fast-paced games unplayable. And that's on top of the infrared line-of-sight problem. My original Genesis controllers solved that problem. And not to defend this system, but it would eventually read all my cartridges unlike other Genesis revamp systems that I've tried. And yeah, the bonus games were trash but that was to be expected. Honestly, I didn't even notice how bad the audio was because I hadn't heard the original game audio in 20 years. Thanks for the side-by-side comparison. Good video, fair critiques.

I bought into the dumpster fire years before this video for 2 reasons. One, My Sega Nomad stopped working, and by topped working, I mean the dial to control the back-lit screen broke off and became unfixable. I had a few good cartirudges, couldn't find a used game shop so this was my next best step and GOOD LORD, I have more to add. I did some experiments with the pile of trash using physical cartridges I own, I took games that had some form of 3D Rendering or Pseudo 3D, Games like Toy Story or Doom. Toy Story has a Doom-like-level where you need to move the Little Green Men out of the maze, With the game hard to beat with the lousy controls given, I punched in the level skip cheat and wanted to play that level again. The level did not load; from what I could rule out, the console doesn't have the ability to perform the math instructions for the Pseudo or Fake 3D effect. So Games I had on hand such as Toy Story and Virtual Racer would be unplayable, one keeping the game from being finished and the other not booting period. Lets KEEP going; I decided to try a different game, an Action RPG called Wonder Boy in Monster World; no 3D graphics, a hard as nails Metroidvainia with sword and magic. Clean the contacts, plugged her in and turned her on. Did, not, boot. No Screen, no noise, just death and silence and soooooooooo much darkness.... So I decided, for kicks, to get my only solid copy of a 3 in one Cartridge with 3 Sonic games, one of the being Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine... AND... Like the one before, it won't boot up. I ripped apart the console and set fir to it the next morning. I tore apart the controllers and used them for spare parts, the buttons are now on a frankensteined PS1 controller I cobbled together and the circuit board, I repurposed into a TV remote for my old CRT Tv's after figuring out how to set them. I scrapped the shells. ... BUT THAT'S NOT THE WORST PART YET!!! There's an At Games Sega Portable, slimmer, slicker and neater but, if not worse, MORE broken than the AtGamesConsole for Genesis.

I remember buying this 5 years ago. Even though the controller was awful and the emulation was terrible, I still have fond memories of playing it. It is what made me an active Sonic fan.

you know something sad? my first exposure to a majority of genesis titles (Comix Zone, Decap Attack, Streets of Rage) was through this console. not the exact model since it didn’t have mortal kombat but it was from AtGames. so as a little kid i assumed these were how the games sounded until i finally figured out how emulators worked.

Oh yes, I returned this bad console to Dollar General on sale...

My brother bought one of these a few years ago. Didn't see him play it, but it didn't look that bad. He later bought a real Mega Drive and hasn't touched this since. After watching this video, I can see why.

The Sonic Soundtracks sound like something that'd play in a Sonic.exe creepypasta. Which... would've actually been a neat touch for the console.

Honestly, I got the handheld version of this (also from atgames) for cheap from a discount department store on a road trip and I played it on airplanes for years and mostly enjoyed it. It was a GREAT purchase that I was happy to get given the price. A nice way to play sega games back when handheld options were more limited. Only issue I really had was that none of my old mortal kombat codes or fatalities worked....and the screen kinda sucked. But it was fine for what it was for.

Oh yeah I remember my dad bought this system from dollar general for me and my brothers but when i played it for the first time it really wasn't a bad thing for me when I was younger but now that I'm looking at this system again, I wish my dad never bought this and should've gotten a regular sega genesis with all the classic sonic games instead

I was a kid, I had something similar to this, but it was an AtGames Genesis Portable, it was still awful, how it sounds is just off, luckily I bought myself the Ultimate Genesis Collection on the 360 and that was awesome

I am a retro gamer and play a lot of the older systems like Sega Genesis, SNES, PS1 etc (still have all my systems and games they all still work 😁) I check out RU-vid for console and game reviews and your video came up. Very good video, entertaining and informative...It's amazing the amount of bad reproduced consoles or clones of both consoles and games out there that just sap up people's money, This one really made a deceptive box design which makes it look like something official, probably hoping people don't look closer, like where the 80 games is actually 40 junk games plus some Sega games that the system can't even properly play. Fun fact: The newer models have HD, the audio is fixed, the controls are more responsive and have less glitches, and the console design is more closer to the original Sega Genesis.

I got this thing in 2013. I noticed the audio wasn’t right, but I enjoyed it anyway, however I didn’t realize how clunky the controllers are until this video lol. Your version isn’t just transposed, it’s a tonal lol.

Its amazing how an actual company working with Sega could make something vastly inferior to Kega Fusion.

Something I should mention: Some versions of this system before the HD one in 2017 had all three Genesis Phantasy Star games. However, the system had neither internal batteries nor save states. In other words, THERE WAS NO WAY TO SAVE YOUR PROGRESS. This meant either permanently leaving the system on or having to start from the beginning every single time.

I have this thing, I never used the default controller since I had my original ones. I didn't like the way the music sounded on thus version of the console but other than that it was fine (again, use official genesis controllers) the thing is this was the last iteration of the console that could run Sonic 3, the later genesis flashback console had a better sound emulator and controllers, but then it refuses to play Sonic 3. I also much prefer to play my own carts rather than the built in ones.

These are the same consoles that John Hancock gave a pass to for years and hid referral links (that he made money off of if clicked and purchased) in his descriptions without labeling them as such (still to this day) and didn’t have an issue with them until he literally had no choice but to change his opinion about the company itself. But he was still confident they would address it and make a mends. He would constantly argue with people, calling them bandwagon for wanting to hate on them. When Sega announced the Mini and it was to be made by AtGames, he was on Twitter arguing and made a video about it saying it was a good thing. When I questioned him and made a video (also did so very politely so he wouldn’t feel sabotaged or trolled) about his referral links, because many people were constantly asking him if he made money off of these consoles and he’d say no repeatedly, he watched my video for less than 3 mins after I sent him the link, and came back, said he hated my video, and blocked me.

I've had this game console and boy, was it bad! ...I actually liked that the sound was off by 4 semitones due to a clocking issue, plus I can replicate that on my computer by lowering the pitch by 4 semitones to get that AtGames feel, except it's in stereo and in HD.

This AtGames "SEGA Genesis" is a joke...I can't believe I actually bought one a few years ago. Made me sad. Anyway, great video and channel!

2:19 I tooted. Regarding the sound problems, it is possible as there is only one audio output they they somehow BADLY merged both of them together and it's creating the corrupt music.

I bought one of these years ago. The controller has to be perfectly lined up, no tilting up down or turning left to right. They have a very narrow field to which they register input. The system is straight trash.
