I'd be delighted if people crossed the road to avoid my dog! I get the opposite- kids in particular, manhandling my dog & even trying to pick him up (which he hates) without asking if its ok. Gsd is my dream dog, I ended up with a pomeranian which is great practice for getting used to barking & mountains of fur...

The top three good things about GSD's shedding are... 1) You get plenty of use out of the vacuum cleaner that would otherwise sit in the closet for months at a time. 2) GSD"s are consistent as they only shed once a year... all year round... for about 10-13 years. 3) GSD's are the gift that keeps on giving. My last GSD passed away (13yo) 2 1/2 years ago; no matter how may times I have vacuumed I still find tuffs of his hair,

I used to brush off a big black garden size of fur per week, and still found fur in the house. She enjoyed brushing and she eventually learned to bring me her brush when she wanted a session. I had a family do this simultaneously. The mom, Gramma, and boy (maybe 12 years old) were trying to avoid us, mom and Gramma clutching the boy for dear life (hiking a trail, we were crossing a bridge going opposite directions) , while the dad and grampa were deliberately taunting my dog and laughing about it, while Gramma says "it's okay, we had one once a long time ago, they're just playing" My girl, of course, was nothing but on her best behavior, she didn't even bark, but *I* was struggling very hard to remain calm 🥲 I didn't want to confront them in front of their kid, so I just said "oh, did you?" And got out of there as fast as we could. To date, that is the worst encounter I've ever had with people in regards to my dog.

My GSD, Ruby, is a West German Show Line Longhair. Yes, most people cross the street when they see us coming which is fine in my book. Some approach to pet without asking and although she is very sweet and not at all aggressive BUT IS PROTECTIVE, I would prefer they don’t and tell them- she wears a vest that clearly states ‘DO NOT PET’. If you have a GSD and did your research- the hair is part of the relationship. I love her to bits -hair and all! Barking, yes, but seemingly ONLY when she perceives a threat. I did more extensive research than most and then searched out a breeder and a trainer. Ruby is my second GSD. I lost my Lucy in 1995. Ruby lives in our home with her big brother Bruno, an 8YO Miniature Schnauzer and we have approached the same GSD breeder for a new brother within the next year as Ruby (72lbs)will turn 1 on St Pat’s day. ***RESEARCH ANY BREED YOU PLAN TO BRING INTO YOUR HOME!!! If you start with the basics (sit, stay, come etc.) And be consistent, that's a good place to start. They need mental and physical stimulation every day, 2 hours for physical if you can, and training sessions/+play throughout the day. They're super easy to train, I've seen children handle them like pros. The teenager phase is tough ngl, and if their exercise needs aren't met or they're bored, they will tear up your whole house 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ You can add in new commands and tricks as you and pup get more advanced, but it's really not too complicated, and you can always hire a professional if you can afford it for extra help if you think you need it.

I am used to dogs and know what happens when you surprise or frighten them. So, being within inches of a large strange dog like that was very unnerving. Luckily, he was well trained and an embarrassment to the breed. As all he wanted was to be petted and loved as dad had abandoned and disowned him to get get some dog treats.

The worst thing for me was the hip problems. My parents owned many German shepherds. They all had horrible hip problems losing the ability to walk and were in constant pain. I would never own them just for that reason. To watch an animal I love go through that was painful.

Ive had four...my last is currently sittin quietly beside me. All of them did the night time perimeter guard bark before bedtime. The only time any barking happens when someone comes to the door. Thats her job. If im out and someone comes up to me fast ....she guard barks. Thats her job. Because shes a working line she is being taught to switch her guardian button off when i ask...shes still a pup

100% right on the fur tumble weeds rolling across your floor. And yes, people definitely cross the road as soon as they see my German Shepherd, lol. I am however lucky that hes not a major barker but will bark if someone or a squirrel is in or near his yard. I love his bark...its impressive and most certainly, intimidating!! 😁

Our Alice was a wonderful dog.. she didn't bark unless there was something to bark at. She grew up with my children and I knew they were safe with her around. I liked that people were automatically afraid of her. Only we knew they had no reason to be. And after a few years you just give up on controlling the hair and Learn To Live With the Tumbleweeds. We lost her 2 years ago.

I have a female German shepherd guide dog. Extremely well trained. Not one aggressive bone in her body. But I was at Costco last week and someone told me that that dog should not be allowed in public places because they are dangerous. I just smiled and kept walking. Because I didn’t have anything nice to say to that person. My dogs not aggressive but I am if you insult my dog.

Had a beautiful registered dog bred by an individual. There were a few working dog kennels in his family tree. He had a perfect disposition. HOWEVER, the energy was off the charts for sedentary people with basically no yard. He ate a few things he should’ve. What did him in was when my wife’s hand got stuck in his collar and she was drug about 20’ before slamming face first into the asphalt drive. Breaks above and below the knuckle, fractured elbow, fractured wrist, and some stitches to the temple. Note that you bleed a lot from wounds to the temple. He wasn’t mean; he was enthusiastic. My daughter has him now; he is grown; has good acreage to exercise; has become quite protective of the family. Still perfect with the grandson. Miss him so. Feel like I failed him.

Now imagine the fear if it's a 41kg German shepard Newfoundland mix. She looks like a gaint muscular German shepard and she inheired extra skin and droopy ears from the Newfoundland making her look even bigger. The sad part is that she is very friendly and loves people though she often pulls to get to them, so everyone stays at least 2 metres away

I like German Shepards, but I admit they can be scary depending on the situation. One time, when I was walking home, there was this lady in her car with this beautiful German Shepard. The German Shepard saw me and started barking like crazy. It was lunging and in no way looked friendly. The lady looked like she was barely holding onto that leash. I wasn't going to mess with that and ended up walking to the other side of the road. She had yelled out that I didn't need to worry and that the dog was friendly, but it was still barking and lunging so hard that she was being pulled forward. Another time, I was walking on a trail in a nature reserve with my friend, and our of nowhere is German Shepard came charging toward us full speed. I was scared cause there was a large dog running at me full speed with no owner in sight and had to remind myself not to run. My friend, on the other hand, was like, 'puppy!' and immediately started petting it while it slowed and circled us. Its owner came out, apologized, and put it on a leash, but at the time, it was scary. Great doggo, by way! Super friendly and happy to say hello!

I've got a pitbull/Rottweiler/husky/lab mix, and I love when grown men cross the road because of my little man. It's funny cus he's just a little ball of sunshine, wouldn't hurt a fly. But he's a good creep deterrent when u live in the slums.

My GSD pup is just coming up to 5 months old. He does bark sometimes but for the most part he is quiet. Having said that, I suspect he will bark more as he gets older, especially in that teenage rebellious stage which is coming so very soon. Fur around the house isn't a big issue, wooden floors make it easy to see and clean. And I hope people leave me alone when walking him, at the moment everyone is all over him because he is a blue German Shepherd and because they haven't seen one before, people literally go out of their way to bump into him, I was walking him the other day and a woman was unloading her car, she saw me, went back to throw whatever she had in her hand back into the boot, and ran into her front yard to bring her black lab out to meet my dog, people will speed up, slow down, turn around, just to "accidentally" meet him, walking down the main road and people stop me, I hardly get anywhere, not even lying when I say a woman nearly got hit by a car while crossing the road just to see him, people take pictures of him and everything, I have told people not to as he still needs to learn how to behave, but they dont listen. I want to punch each and every one of them.

They bark, drool a lot. And they shed for days. But they are some of the GREATEST dogs you can have. Trained or not trained. A dog, it doesn't matter the breed, a dog will be nice if it was raised nice. If you mistreat a dog when it's young or ever really. It looses trust for humans. And that's where you see these abandoned dogs who won't go near a human because the person they trusted tossed them out of a car at 40 mph.. just know, they are big dogs and need space. They are not apartment type dogs.

My guy doesn’t bark! Thanks god I can leave him on the balcony while at work and he doesn’t bark!!! Love him And yes everyone is scared of him! The best part about a German shepherd for me is all his love is for me, he doesn’t give love to anyone or want anyone to pet him! He doesn’t understand why ppl want to touch him! lol 😂
