WORST TO BEST: Phil Elverum (Microphones/Mount Eerie)

It has been brought to my attention that there are a multitude of inaccuracies to be found within my Phil Elverum ranking video, with four particular details being noted as incorrect.
Let this act as a correction of my previous mistakes and a sincere apology for the errors made in my writing.
1. The Microphones is a solo project. I falsely labeled the Microphones as a band due to multiple different people (i.e. Khaela Maricich, Karl Blau, Anna Oxygen) making multiple contributions to each one of Phil’s Microphones albums. The Microphones is not a band. This was wrong and I am sorry.
2. Dawn was not recorded in a cabin in Norway. It was written in the cabin and recorded years later. This was wrong and I am sorry.
3. It Was Hot was not his first to be recorded “professionally in a studio,” rather it was given similar treatment to their other records. This was wrong and I am sorry.
4. I claimed “Florida Beach” and “Voice in Headphones” were rare instances of Phil interpolating another artist’s lyrics, but this has happened many times with the music of Adrian Orange and Little Wings, among others.
I am so grateful for the assistance of one “open classroom” who has provided me with these missing details.
I will do everything in my power to fact check and analyze my words before I publish them to the public. You do not deserve to be fed purposeless misinformation. You, my viewers, are smart and decent human beings who do not deserve to be lied to.
I am sorry for the many mistakes made within this video. I hope you can still find something of value in its content despite its errors.
Have a nice day.

Hi, I noticed some errors in the video. I can see you have a genuine interest, you bought the records from the artist, and you are promoting the work. There's also a few pieces of information you got wrong. First of all, The Microphones was never a band, it was always a solo project, mostly just with certain guest vocalists and other occasional contributions on some tracks. It's a pretty big misconception based on the name and the sound. It sounds like a band, but it's mostly just one person multi-tracking. The Microphones and Mount Eerie are the same project, and it's a solo project. Also, you say Dawn was recorded in a cabin in Norway. Apparently, much of it was written in a cabin in Norway, but it was recorded around 5 years later. From what I read, he didn't even have electricity in the cabin. From what I understand, he toured the songs around, and they ended up in different versions on different releases (Live in Japan, 7 New Songs, 11 Old Songs, later Lost Wisdom), but by the time he had a new set-up to record more seriously, the "No Flashlight" songs were more current and relevant to him, so he moved on. That's why it took 5 years, and finally a decision to just put them down simply and relatively quickly, how they were written with voice and guitar, rather than something more produced and multi-tracked. You also said It Was Hot We Stayed in the Water was the first record recorded in a "studio" by "professionals." Don't Wake Me Up was, at least in part, recorded at the same studio as the later Microphones releases (Water, Glow, Eerie): Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, Washington. Also, the only professional that recorded any of those records at Dub Narcotic was the artist himself, who had been given the key to the studio by the owner, K Records founder Calvin Johnson, and had time in there himself to use the mics and tape machines and all the analog equipment. Apparently it wasn't much of a professional studio at all, but one big room with a bunch of used, half-broken analog recording equipment. Also, you said that the Beach Boys reference on Florida Beach was the only use of someone else's lyrics, but then later you note how he quotes Bjork on Voice in Headphones. There are a lot of references to other people's songs on other records, just to point to a few others: he references a Neil Young song on Live in Japan, he sings an Eric's Trip song called Sand on It Was Hot, Solar System on Mount Eerie is based on a Little Wings song, and Little Wings and others also sang and wrote parts on that same record, and there are other Little Wings crossovers, also even as recently as Lost Wisdom 2, in the song Enduring the Waves, he references Adrian Orange. There are a lot more that it would take a long time to name. I am not even the most knowledgeable person about this, but this is an artist who has been putting out music for over 20 years and has been pretty generous in giving interviews and discussing their work with the hope that people understand it, so I have picked up pieces of the story, and had plenty of years to listen to these records or not listen to these records. If you are this interested, I recommend you find some more interviews, articles, transcripts and audio, that are on the internet.

@@openclassroom1649 Appreciate you bringing the knowledge and not being a dick about it. I was irked by a few of the same statements and was glad to see this comment. Phil's biography/mythology is dense so it makes sense for the reviewer to miss a few things, but I hope these missteps are a bit of a warning to him against leaning heavily on hyperbole and overgeneralizations in reviewing. Especially reviewing music he clearly loves. Everyone wants to sound like an authoritative source, but putting on that persona can end up biting you in the ass if you haven't done enough research.

Aw, the mid-rank Microphones in 2020 hurt my heart. Probably my favorite Phil release of them all. It's odd how little I feel its length. This may sound odd, but I really do feel as though it is actually some of Phil's most accessible music. Good review, though.

The Glow Pt. 2 is one of my favourite albums of all time, but for some reason i never really took that deep dive into Phil's music beyond that album, other than a cursory listen to Microphones in 2020 when it came out. this video may finally get me to do it. btw i'm so glad you're doing a video on Yung Lean next, he's probably my favourite artist ever and there are so few people making well thought out and quality content about him. excited to see where your channel goes in general. keep it up dude.

is it just me or is lost wisdom pt2 not very devastating? it’s definitely more about his divorce with michelle williams than it is about genevieve. but it feels more hopeful with songs like love without possession and belief pt2, i personally love the album but i can see why people thought it was just more of the ssme
@CakeBossan
@CakeBossan 2 года назад
yeah, huge mischaracterization by looking at it as a "grief" album rather than a "growth" album. i feel it needs to be seen as a sequel to lost wisdom. also idk why but the NPR tiny desk concert makes the album so much more satisfying to subsequently listen to. julie doiron singing the first line of Love Without Possession is unmatched.

I adore both of these albums but together they just feel like. P.S I listened to it was hot we stayed in the water and I loved it but there’s only 2 instrumentals it isn’t mostly instrumental as you suggested at all however the vocals are low in the mix

Like what you said about microphones in 2020's intro being 6 minutes of two guitar chords... I feel like theres something so beautiful about that yknow. But you also pointed out some positives that i hadnt thought about for albums like no flashlight. Great video, insightful commentary, love seeing other fans of phils music!

While I do believe there are certainly musical and lyrical themes that sre shared between glow pt. 2 and the mount eerie album, I think that really they're connected and separated in different ways. Whe the Glow pt. 2 does contain references to nature, it also mentions oral sex and relationships and breakups and isolationism. To me the album represents life. And once life is over you die. Which is actually what the album Mount Eerie is about. If you have the vinyl (idk about the cd), there's an infamous lyric booklet with drawings detailing rhe story throughout the album and how he actually came up with it. There so many points in this record where Phil's lyrics show that he knows it is his time, he is ready to embrace death. The album goes from him ready to die, to going through the death process, to then dying. So while the 2 albums can be related through certain themes within the lyrics, I see them as 2 separate stories that can connect

Imo, I think his recent album 'Microphones in 2020' is his 3rd best album. It contains all of his life as a musician, and it amazingly collaborates all of his musical experiments on repetitive, monotonous, but moving guitar riff. This video is awesome but I REALLY REALLY disagree that LostWiisdom pt2 is the worst of the last three mount eerie records, I saw Lost Wisdom pt.2 as a sort of return to form musically. Phil is more composed and dealing with his emotions much better. I also think the stripped back nature of the album is one of it's strong suits, you could say the same thing you said about part 2 about part 1, but it worked on part 1 and I think it works on part 2 aswell
