Dct are great for a track car that's full noise or full brake. Cruising and creeping in traffic is NOT how they're designed. However, Ford fucked the dct as badly as Nissan fucked the CVT. They made an unsuitable product worse.

@@idkwhattoputformynameytI agree somewhat on the CVT, I own 2 Nissans with one having 153k miles and regular fluid changes. There’s certain early year CVTs that just aren’t as reliable as the later variants, no matter how you drive and maintain them, same goes for Ford’s DCT units. @@Kacpa2 They are talking about the driving feel, not the shifting feel. With a traditional torque converter (paired to an auto), there is only a viscous coupling which makes the car feel disconnected from the engine until converter lock-up speeds are reached, and this hurts efficiency. With a modern TQ (like in a zf-8), this lockup can happen much sooner and take advantage of the higher efficiency of a direct connection while also using a viscous coupling to pull away from idle.

My wife had a 2012 Focus Titanium with the DCT trans. During its life, it failed FIVE times. Ford repaired it the first 4 times; when it failed for the FIFTH time, they said WE had to pay for the repair. I contacted Ford Customer (dis)Service and told them I owned over 24 Fords in my life; they said too bad. So we contacted a Lemon Law attorney who took our case. Two months later, we got a $20,000 check from Ford, who bought the vehicle back from us. It was 8 years old with over 80,000 miles on it. I'll never own another Ford product. By the way, we were one of the cars featured in the Detroit Free Press investigative series on the defective Ford transmission.

I've fixed 3 of these things in my driveway and helped a neighbor do theirs within the last year and a half, all clutch fork problems and that's it. And in my experience, Ford, dealers, and mechanics almost alway get this easy, simple, and now cheap to fix (because of so many used parts around now) wrong from the start. I took the time to figure out the problem, fixed the damn thing, then figured out ways to prevent the problem from happening again via cleaning and spraying some simple wd-40 through some strategically drilled access ports.

That’s TOTALLY UNTRUE. Ford sent out MANY technical bulletins from DAY ONE. They did instruct us to inform the customer that even in normal operation, it would feel differently than a conventional automatic because it would feel like a manual. There were 2 types of complaints. 1. The ones where the customer simply didn’t like the normal operating characteristics. 2. The ones that had problems such as shuddering, delays, and slippage. In the first instance, THATS when the customer were told it was normal. In the second case, Ford offered MANY solutions and in no way encouraged dealers to deny coverage. They even gave us an expedited testing procedures to more accurately identify problems. And even before they had a real fix, they allowed us to replace the clutch or Control module as many times as needed.
@baffledbyit
@baffledbyit 8 месяцев назад
Shuddering, delays and slippage should never be considered normal in any transmission. Multiple replacement of the same part is not fixing the problem. The transmission should have never been released on the public like a virus in the first place.

100% can confirm they only admited a known issue after I took it to them 3 time. FORD LIED AND I WILL NEVER MAKE THAT MISTAKE OF trusting Ford again. IF ford goes out of business GOOD. I honestly will not bail them out next time.
@dmandman9
@dmandman9 8 месяцев назад
@@baffledbyit True, it shouldn’t have been released. And no, the shuddering etc. were NOT considered normal. That’s NOT what they were trying to portray as normal. Again , those complaints were legitimate. But the fact that it felt like a transmission with a clutch was normal because it IS a transmission with a clutch. When working PERFECTLY it’s still NOT equipped with a torque converter. So it WILL feel a bit different because the hydraulic dampening of a torque converter is not present. And I agree that simply replacing the part with the exact same part was not fixing the problem. But they did fix the leaking seals. They revised and improved the seals. Some of the updates did correct the problem for SOME customers. And FINALLY they revised the design of the replacement clutch. So the ones we’ve been replacing since around 2016-2017 don’t seem to have repeat failures. And they did extend the warranty to 7 years/100,000 miles. We were replacing them right and left at Fords expense for a while. So they cost THEMSELVES a lot of money especially since they replaced multiple clutches on many cars. And the cars were already their LEAST EXPENSIVE models. In addition, they extended the Transmission control module to 10 years 150,000 miles. And if the vehicles have already exceeded that number, they’ll still replace it one time until June of 2025 I believe. So their stupidity did cost them. But they NEVER instructed us to discourage customers by telling the that abnormal operation was normal. If a dealer did that, it was THAT DEALER. It was NOT Ford. Don’t let an individual dealer lie to you. Ford developed a program to specifically show that when a clutch was shuddering. It’s a finite value that eliminates ALL subjective feelings. If it’s above x value, it’s bad. If it’s below X value, it’s ok. Likewise if a test shows that the problem is the transmission module, it gets replaced. Period.

Every time I asked Ford Canada why they can’t replace the transmission I was never given an answer. Instead Ford Canada put in four clutch packs because the seals kept failing. As well, the car had to have the TCM replaced. The car stalled on a slight incline in a Costco parking lot and then reverse stopped working. I don’t panic while driving, but put someone who panics easily behind the wheel of one of these cars and I’m sure fatalities resulted. I was so happy to get rid of it in May 2021. Consider GM's: lack of more efficient autos requiring a bailout, Toyota's brakes, rust prone frames, horrible LE Van, etc. Most of the CVT Transmissions except the DAF original CVT, Nissan having to kill off the Datsun brand because they exported non-US spec cars via the Virgin Islands to the US, Honda's Oddessy Minivan that came with a weak automatic transaxle for a car, Chrysler Minivans that came with the Mitsubishi drive trains that sucked, etc. etc....

How funny it is that the industry standard is to use a wet clutch in this application so Ford chooses to use a dry clutch. Disaster ensues. Furthermore, it is industry standard to use dry timing belts if you're using a belt instead of a chain. So naturally, Ford uses a wet belt. Disaster ensues. Hmm...🤔

Hyundai has a dry clutch DCT from the same era and I won’t argue that it’s perfect, or even good, but it’s been a hell of a lot more reliable than these shitboxes. I haven’t had any problems related to mine, though they’re not known for being very reliable. Hyundai also has a 150,000 15 year warranty that transfers to used owners too so if it did it’d likely be covered. They’ve since switched to a wet clutch system and don’t offer a dry at all anymore, while Ford is still selling select models with this same Powershit “transmissions”

It's got nothing to do with wet vs dry clutches. Ford uses a wet clutch on the 6DCT450 (Mondeo) and it's also sh*t, so much so that they had to shorten the service intervals on them to make them last until the New Car Warranty expired.

@richardmillhousenixon
@richardmillhousenixon 8 месяцев назад
The problem that Ford used was they tried to make the dual clutch feel like a traditional automatic. Its not a trad automatic, its a dual clutch. Because it uses clutches, not a torque converter, it needs to shift more like a standard transmission, rougher, more immediate. This relaxed shifting caused extra wear on the actuators and the clutches, which was the reason for the failures. I had to get my TCMs (which had the actuators integrated into them) on my Focus replaced about 3 years ago, and immediately after I got the car back, I custom tuned it to shift more aggressively, and I also drive it like it has a manual, I dont let it creep forward at stop lights (riding the brake letting it creep slowly), I don't try to do jumpstarts, if I want to accelerate hard I let it roll a foot or two to make sure the clutches are engaged and then I hit the throttle, things like that. Ever since, I've had zero problems, and I've put about 25k on it since then.

@@666cemetaryslut A wet system would have allowed them to make it drive like a trad automatic, with smooth shifts. @richardmillhousenixon 8 месяцев назад
@@666cemetaryslut Yes it can, because if you tune it to shift more aggressively (not easing into the clutch, just engaging it and disengaging it) it works great. You can see the difference on the diagnostics if you have a scanner that can read the full ECM data (your cheap 20$ parts store reader can't). It has sensors to tell if the clutch is overheating, which is what often malfunction, which causes the errant shifting into neutral and lagging on shifts, so you can see the difference.

Powershift cars that had a lot of highway miles are much less likely to have issues than those with fewer miles but most/all city driving. I drove a focus as a delivery driver for a while. It felt really jerky and shuddery between some gears. When my manager asked which cars of the fleet should be retired I recommended the focus. Even though it was in better overall condition than other cars in the fleet I knew that transmission wouldnt cooperate much longer.

Something I never understood was why Ford didn't stop building these models with the Powershift transmission and convert to the conventional automatic transmission used in the 2 wheel drive escape models. If I understand correctly both the Focus and the Escape were based on the same platform. It seems to me that the escape drivetrain should have fit with minimal modification.

1) That would be too costly and time consuming for the assembly plant in Mexico to make a changeover. Once they are committed to the the transmission, they are stuck with it. The decision has to be made several years prior to actual implementation. 2) Ford thought the Powershift tranny would be improved with updated parts, which it was. I drove a 2014 Fiesta which was much smoother than a 2012 Fiesta.

My first car was a 2011 Ford fiesta with a power shift. I had it for a little over a year until the TCM started having major issues, rendering the car undrivable. My parents bought this car for me, thinking it was a super reliable option, based on my step father having an ecoboost model as a work car years ago, and his daughter also owning one (same year as mine). The moment my car started having problems, my parents didn't want to believe that the car was a lemon like the rest of them, and actually blamed me for it. The TCM failed at 77k miles and they blamed the way I drove it. Keeping in mind my step father was a mechanic (a really good one too) for decades before his current career path. After months of waiting for an OEM part to come in (they were on backorder at the time), I said fuck it and purchased a reman from Dorman. The same day I got the car back, it started having the same issues. It was around this time my parents stopped giving a shit about what I did with the car, they really didn't want me to get rid of it "because it was a gift, and I'm being ungrateful for wanting a different car." The next day, I drove that pos in limp mode to a used car lot, traded it in for something else, and have been happy since then. Ironically, about a month after I traded my fiesta in, my step-sister started having the same exact issue with hers, and traded hers in for something else... I still miss the fiesta sometimes, I just wish it didn't have that god awful transmission. Parents specifically were against me owning a manual, despite me knowing how to drive one.

I made the mistake of not doing enough research when I bought a 2014 Focus used in 2016 with 19K on it and this POS transmission. A brother had bought one earlier in the year and it was later he, and later me would have the problems with this transmission. Not even 5 years later, at least one adjustment by the dealer done, the shudder becoming worse. I had to get rid of this car in September 2021 despite having less than 60 K on it due to the inability for Ford to fix it, parts unobtainable due to the massive need and Pandemic supply shortages and the extended factory warranty at the time running out. (7 yr/70K). It also had been in a significant crash, and although fixed professionally, the trade-in value was only $1500 on a new Mazda CX-30 chosen in large part as didn't have a CVT, but a real 'traditional' automatic and from research not a problem part. It sickens me that while the rest of the car was very good, that these transmissions made them worthless. The Detroit Free Press did and extensive investigative article that exposed the gross incompetency of Ford, more trying to extend highway mileage on them so could sell other larger, more profitable and fuel thirsty models.

I remember back in the day when VAG DSG transmissions where aweful at times, I drove a Ford rental with a Powershift and saw how much worse it can get :) VAG started in 2003, for many the MK5 GTi with DSG was the first touch with DCT´s, and now years later the DSG got alot better in my current Passat TDI wetclutch DQ381 but sometimes its still not perfect enough after 20 years in development. VAG also had problems with their dryclutch DQ200. DCT´s are very efficient but need alot of development time...

My very first new car was a 2012 Focus which, and I thank God to this day, I decided to lease. Everything was great until about 10,000 miles in when I noticed new and unnerving noises coming from the transmission between shifts, and the shifts got noticeably slower. It only got worse from there, with alarming gaps in power delivery between shifts. My lease was only 2 years so I just lived with the poor performance at the end. The day I drove it back to the dealer to turn it in, it decided to pop itself into neutral on a busy road and had I not been close to a business with parking I would have been the guy stuck in the middle of the road during afternoon rush hour traffic. The worst part, the rest of the car was fantastic. It drove very well for a small car. The interior felt amazing for early 2010's economy car. The engine was a peppy high-compression naturally aspirated 4 that made good power and was efficient. It was my first hatchback and I loved the utility. Anyone that got a 5-speed probably got the best small car Ford sold in the U.S. The powershift probably played a huge part in destroying the Focus brand in the U.S., combined with the complete lack of attention to their other cars, it's no wonder Ford just abandoned the car market all together.

Bought a '12 focus in '17 and still have it today. In the time i have had it the clutch has been replaced twice. The first one was due to shiftfork-A seizing in gear (operates 1,3,5) which burnt off clutch -B ( operates 2,4,6,R) and fried 3 servos as the repair bill was still cheaper than a tow bill to get it home 200 miles away. The second time was due to the main seal leaking after the first repair and creating a slick spot on the clutches. That was a few years ago and the car does have a sporty feel and tears up the corners. I also realized a long time ago you have to drive it with purpose, either give it fuel or dont, you cant baby it or drive it like granny. As long as you change up your aggressiveness it isnt able to learn 'bad habits' (it is self learning somewhat) and start shuddering. When it does start shuddering the unofficial service tech fix was to take it on a quite aggressive "test drive" and flog it up to around 60 mph and let it coast back down to first gear a couple times. Love the car and will drive it until it cant move, then walk away lol Transmission aside, by far the scariest component of the car is the 2.0L engine. It is an interference engine that is not keyed and the crankshaft/timing/pulley is held together by friction from a ($40) torque-to-yield 4 in bolt and a ($30) diamond encrusted washer tightened to 100nm+90deg

I bought Ford Focus 2013 with powershift 1.6 half year ago in october 2023 and been driving it since then. The car had 134k km on it and when I was going to purchase it I did some reasearch and I actually read that it is problematic transmission, however sometimes I read that it could be okay, and I decided to give it a try. The car itself were in a amazing condition because of the garage storing and and actually low mileage for 10 years. It actually looked and felt like a new car inside and outside, previous owners had been carrying this car in a very good way. It also has a great feauturs like heating of the frontshield, car blind spots, folding mirrors, cruise control, light sensor, rain sensor, sign reading system, electric windows on all doors and I paid 7700 euro in Germany for this car. In that range of price and features it was a good price on a market for this car. Of course, you can say I'm idiot buying this for such a price in Europe, however whatever, it was my first car and I didn't do a comrehensive research and I just wanted to buy a car and this one was a very good look and feature and drove well as well. Driving experience: The car handles just great, comfortable to be in it even for a long distance, and the powershift.....it is very weird behaviour in those 6 months that I've been driven thi car. When I turned it on and starting to drive - the powershift works very smooth, I don't notice how it shifts the gears, I do not have any shuddering and etc. But this is only for the first 20-30 minutes of driving. Then,, it start sometimes shuddering not knowing when to shift a gear but I'd say it's minot issue, as I can release the gas pedal of a second an the push it again and shuddering dissapears and it shifts the next gear as it supposed to be. I live in a city with hugh traffic (Warsaw) and being in trafic after 20-30 minutes, the powershift start to be much worse. It kicks badly when trying to shift from 1st to 2nd gear, from 2nd to 3rd could be ok but not always and highter is ok. The worst part is after being in traffic for a long period, seems like the transmission is heating and changing from 1st to 2nd is a pain and after each time I want to sell that car badly. When I'm not in traffic and just driving for about an hour or two - it just ok, minor shuddering and kicking when shifting might occur but they are "low" and insufficient to worry about. Also, one of the frustrated thing that were happening is I couldn't accelerate the car fast when I need to becase it started to kicking inside like hell, like the wheels are towing even if the road is dry. So I had to push the gas pedal gently in order to accelerate for at least from 0 to 10-15 and then I could accelerate it swiftly and gas pedal to the floor. I went to service station and guys did adaptaion of powershift which has taken about 3 hours. After that car became much better to drive - better acceleration, better smoothness, much faster response on the gas pedal and those kicks when I'm trying to accelerate fast had gone! I was very happy about it, however, shudderings and kicks after traffics still exists but in less proportions then it was before. After 2 thousand km, chec engine appeared and I went to official dealer and they said my catalytic controller is broken and I have to replace it. I also noticed that car started to behave like I'm towing something and I felt smell of a benzin when I turn it on. However dealer in Warsaw Poland, told that it would cost me 2100 euro for a new catalytics controller and 250 for work to replace it. I was like what? Are you serious? It's 1/3 of the price of the car! My friend bought in Germany Ford Focus mk2 2008 for that price! I was shocked to the the least. So I went to a service station aside and they charged me 450 euro for calaytics controller plus 200 euro work. It was not originial of course, however it's been fixed. So to summaraze: I have mixed feeling owning this car. It drives very wells, it looks nice, it has a condition of a new car, it has a lot of features that I love, like car blind spots, heating of a front winshield and etc. But powershift is dissapointing, however it became much better than it was after adaptaion. And of course broken catalytics controller has taken almost 700 euro out of me. When it drives smooth - I really like that car, however after traffic I'm just mad. And I don't know whether to keep it or seel, because when I'm trying to look what is on the market for fuch price (let's say 8000 euro) - there are very few cars that has those features, mileage and condition. I have to pay at least 10-12k euro to find an alternative, an I've been looking for a Mazda 3 as a replacement, but for a good competitor they are 12-15k euro. So, I really don't know what to do. If the clutch and transmission faile in the future and I have to pay 1000$ for replacement, of course it's a lot, however it'll be new and it will run without any issue as I've read in web comments of people who did that. And I either need to sell it and get some reliable car, or just keep it and just pay 1000$ to replace that transmission and drive then without issue for some period. Because overall I like the car despite the powershift. Very very very incomprehensible situation for me. But that's my review, maybe someone will find it usefull.

Some manufacturers do it better than others but basically nobody brings anything new to market that isn't pretty much being beta tested by paying customers. There's simply no profitable business model that works with your idea.

That wouldn't be the case with my company. In my company I'd only hire the world's best and the world's brightest. Sure, I'd expect a taut and orderly ship and a good solid day's worth of work out of them every single day, but in reward for their stellar work and dedication, they'd be richly rewarded and handsomely compensated. MY company would have had that transmission in testing 10 to 15 years ahead of the competition, why, they couldn't dream of the innovations MY team had coming down the pipe, and MY team would have that transmission functioning like a dream well before it appeared in practical application years and years ahead my bumbling short-sighted and narrow minded competitors. Failed attempts and pathetic recalls would never happen in my organization, and if my company wasn't the world's leading automotive producers and innovators, they soon would be.

Drove a 2014 Fiesta for a couple years. Purchased in 2018 with 60k miles, put 40k miles on it 2018-2020. Had 0 issues with the DCT other than occasional hard shift. Car served me well for my long commute and the couple road trips I used it for. I never "hooned" it but I didn't baby it either. When I drove it normally it would get up to 39.5mpg, can't complain about that. What I hated about the car is that the water pump was on the serpentine belt, which broke at 65k miles. Thankfully my engine was undamaged and I was back on the road a couple hour later.

It's nuts to think how Ford was making this absolute turd transmission at the same time they had very reliable regular 6-speed automatics for sale. The 6-speeds in the Taurus/Explorer/Flex barely ever have issues besides TCs in 2.3EB models, which were fairly rare configurations. Heck, even the CVTs in the Fusion Hybrids were far more reliable.

Hi, My name is Gideon a South African, In 2016 we bought a New Ford Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost with a Powershift Transmission. All went well in the begin until 2020 the Transmission begun giving problems such as not engaging gears and if it did it will be shuddering eventually giving a rough and unpleasant ride.Eventually it just stop.Upon calling the Agents"Action Ford" and explained what has happened to the Vehicle we were told it was out of Warranty. And the Vehicle was still at 70500kms on the Odometer. We were stuck trying to raise funds to repair it until someone told us about the extended Warranty from Ford and we took the Vehicle to Ford they then replaced the TCM and quoted us R180.000,00 for a replacement Transmission or We must take it to Mayfair Gearbox Service at our own cost. I still find this unacceptable and very unfair by Ford Motors SA.Is there a way that we could still have a Valid Claim on this Transmission?

Being in the car business for the last 20 years, I always get ask this when it comes to fords cars(not trucks). People would ask, “should I get a focus or fiesta?” And I would say, “Only if it’s a manual transmission with 3 pedals. If not, move on to something else.” One ford dealership I went to, from a previous job, the tech was working on a low mileage Ecosport with 23k miles. I asked him, “WTF is that doing in the shop with the trans out? It’s only two years old.” He replied, “Trans blew up.” We both shook our heads. He was telling me that’s all he does is trans from fiesta, focus, escape, and ecosport built after 2012.😅😅😅

I was a temporary fleet manager for about 6 months and had to oversee nearly 50 Ford Fiesta's and Focus' in our company fleet. These transmissions were so notoriously unreliable. We had to send 9 of our vehicles to the dealerships for replacement, one of them had failed at only 17,000 miles, while another vehicle had to have its transmission replaced *TWICE*. First failure at about 25,000 miles (before I became the fleet manager), then again at 47,000 miles. Thank goodness our entire fleet had been leased from Enterprise Fleet Services. This experience solidfied my mistrust in Ford, and I've gladly stuck to Honda and Toyota.

Rebuilt a DPS6 for my nephew, new seals and clutches. someone at Getrag didn't take the transport springs off the clutch forks, one was ground up, pieces all through the clutch and behind the forks, the second spring finally danced up behind the B fork to jam it engaged. All new seals and a clutch kit, for 160k miles the car drives like a dream, shifts flawlessly now. Now a ford dealer allegedly replaced the clutch, I'm not sure what that meant but the dealer in question didn't unless there's some magic removal without taking out the ball joints. I think the primary assembly from Getrag needs some review, its easy to cut the seals if you're careless and that's going to cause a leak into the clutches. It was fun rebuilding it, took just a few hours in the driveway.

Yes I bought a Ford mondeo in England and had problems with mine eventually had it replaced at a cost of £2500! We bought the car second hand and purchased an extended warranty. At first the car company didn’t want to pay out insisting it must have been our fault! Luckily we has a very good lawyer who was going to take them to court after 12 months of wrangling the paid us a refund. While we were having trouble we did tons of research and found out it was a problem Ford knew about but here in the UK they didn’t admit a problem.

My 2017 ford focus has just over 160k miles on it, and it’s finally starting to have some significant faults where it won’t go in reverse, it’ll rev up to 7000 rpms randomly, and just terrible shifting. Very early on, at 60k miles, it had rough shifting, trembling, and shuddering which I was able to fix by having ford replace the clutches under warranty, and remove all paint from any electrical connections. I also learned that releasing the accelerator once it revs up to 3500 RPMs allowed it to switch gears smoothly. The past 100k miles have been what I imagine ford hoped the PST could deliver, a smooth and fuel-efficient ride at any speed. I’ve beaten this thing into the ground, and hopefully the dealership can fix my issues, because this car has served me very well.

100 miles a day and 40MPG seems to imply a lot of highway driving, which isn't hard on these transmissions and they will usually be okay. It's the city driving and creeping forward in traffic that kills them, because the clutch is repeatedly being cycled and slipped.

I kind of want to talk about what we went through with this car, like when I first met my wife, her car wouldn’t shift beyond 4th gear so she was driving it around pegging out the RPMs on the highway. I know friends that had these, they had no issues. Should have used wet clutches though. Although my ‘98 F355 F1 uses a single dry clutch. If this Ferrari F1 trans was sold to regular consumers, they too would have had a class action LS in terms of its quirks haha. However it is an amazing trans IMO, as you should always shift using the paddles (if you want to be smooth) and blip the throttle. Also the clutch is located behind the transaxle, making it a relatively simple 3 hour job to replace the clutch.

My wife had a Focus Titanium with it when we met and we still have it to this day. It stranded us several times over the years and Ford worked on it 5 times I think, replacing the TCM, clutches, and more. The last fix was at 80k and it has gotten us to over 100 now. I think they re flashed it in the end so it now shifts much more aggressively/rough. We have found that granny driving and stop/go traffic it is what causes the most issues. If you drive it harder it doesn't try slip and burn up the clutches as much. I was really hoping we could get a final fix in before 100k because its now out of warranty but so far so good.
