If I had a nickel for every webtoon I read about a young orphan girl adopted into a noble family to replace their dead daughter only to be harassed and abused by her new family until they eventually kill her resulting in her regressing to the midpoint in her relationship with that family and allowing her to change the future while also uncovering her magical abilities and pursuing a dark haired love interest, I'd have two nickels. Which doesn't sound like a lot, but I need you to understand that I have seen that exact plotline used twice and variations from it used dozens of times and I've read all of them because I have a crippling shoujo manga addiction.

I actually read a villainess isekai that I absolutely LOVED. The main character was pretty much a normal person and the story was kinda her realizing that most of the love interests for the heroine are either creepy, toxic or both. And the best part was she forced the male leads to take accountability for their behavior and SHE DOESN'T FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM but instead finds her own love interest that wasnt even a part of the 'original plot'. I really liked it since it was pretty funny, interesting and sweet. Its called Beware the Villainess and its so good.

I got so tired of the intense unwarranted bullying in many webtoons featuring high school 😭 It may be a cultural thing because I noticed this in a lot of Korean webcomics? But I got really tired of this in unOrdinary. There’s no justification for the bullies to go to the lengths they do.

I’m working on writing a comic where a girl gets reincarnated into a romance novel she’s never read cause it just sat on her bedside table for months. She wakes up in the body of a side character trapped in the villains dungeon. When the FL breaks in to save everyone isekai girl hears all the noise and hides under the bed in her cell. The FL thinks the cell is empty and doesn't rescue her, and isekai girl ends up having to join forces with the villain. The author can also speak to her and kinda helps her but I’m still figuring that part out.

This isn’t really a trope, but a common thing I’ve noticed in webtoons that really annoys me is words in asterisks for actions that are already happening on screen. Words like hug, shove, kiss, etc. It completely takes me out of the moment. Like, you’re already drawing the action! I can tell that the characters are hugging because you drew that!

The only time that action asterisks are useful is in hentai, thriller and action, I guess they intensify the moment. Like in action when the person falls on something and it makes a very specific *tong or In thriller when the villains footsteps are closing in but they're not in frame from the victim's perspective so they put the asterisks of *footsteps sound or any other one, or in hentai when you know certain asterisks intensify certain actions coz they're acting as a representation for the sounds that we can't hear

@maria.skorik
@maria.skorik Год назад
As a fashion history nerd the off-brand Europe setting drives me crazy. The women's dresses range anywhere from the 1400s to 1890s to modern prom dress. The men are wearing modern suits, and occasionally 1700s military uniforms. And everyone is wearing their hair down in loose beach waves like it's 2014. I know you can't expect a Korean comic artist to be an expert on European fashion history, but it would be so cool if there were a few details that made the setting feel more believable. For example, a woman would never be seen in public with her hair down or without gloves, and putting her in that situation would show vulnerability.

There's a difference between improved art styles and changing their outfit or parts of their hair style with no in-show reason why. 2. The power of friendship solving everything. I think a webcomic that does the whole "scrolling, dispersed text bubbles, made for phones" style is Heaven Official's Blessing. Spreading the text over multiple panels adds a sense of anticipation, but the art is so detailed and beautiful that there's so much to look at that it doesn't become boring. Edit: the only issue is that it's hosted on a platform that does micro transactions. Technically they aren't required, but if you don't pay you have to wait an incrementally longer period of time to read the next episode. (1 minute, 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hrs, 24 hrs, then it repeats). It's really irritating, especially when you're waiting for the next update and then you have to wait an additional few hours to actually read the newly released episode

Yo, artist of a (currently unpublished) webtoon here. Webtoon follows vertical scroll format, and I wanted to elaborate on how vertical scroll can be used. I understand how it can feel slow and generally uninteresting if done that way, but if the artist knows what they’re doing, it can be an amazing tool. Panels and scroll are both equally good, but for different reasons. Some of the things I like about scroll is, like you said, the pacing- personally, I think it’s more immersive. More than that though, I think the scroll does an amazing job of communicating movement. If done right, panels can almost have an animated feel. Just wanted to give you a different perspective :) love your videos!

10:11 Another thing about this that I feel is frustrating is the fact that before the excessive microtransactions, people could leave top comments at the end of the latest chapter and people in the audience could actively give their input on that chapter as if in real time. Meanwhile now, you may scroll down to the top comments and most of them are just comments from weeks or months prior about how they used their coins. It distracts from the interactive experience that weekly comics have between the readers and the author. It becomes less about the story and more about the microtransactions.

I do enjoy some of those reborn-isekai or I-died-and-get-to-start-over-again stories but they're definitely SUPER oversaturated, which wouldn't be so exhausting if they didn't feel like regurgitated stories with slightly different characters. Some of them are really good and have actual interesting plot hooks (Empress' Lipstick and Long After The Ending are REALLY good for this) but too many of them are frustratingly similar to each other. I do wish some webtoon creators wouldn't space out their comics so much with unnecessary panels for JUST ONE WORD BUBBLE but I'm not super pressed about it. I definitely prefer the new vertical scrolling style in a lot of aspects because of the formatting of the app. Page-style makes it impossible to read or see details, so at least for Webtoon and other similar apps' formatting, the vertical just makes more sense and makes it easier for me to appreciate the art.

My favorites on webtoon of this genre are remarried empress(not an exact clone but def similar vibes) and death is the only end for the villainess. The latter especially, because she violently dislikes most of the romantic leads, but the way the world works is they'll literally kill her if she doesn't find ways to protect, defend, seduce, and so on. nice lil subversion and the art styles pretty. Oh and congrats on the physical book!
@stingingcake853
@stingingcake853 Год назад
Those are definitely two examples on the opposite end of the "vIllainess" subgenre. Like, Remarried Empress is the villainess story without any time travel or isekai (which is why it stands out, as a lot of stories don't really need that element to work, but throw it in anyways because genre convention), and then Death is the only end for a Villainess only works because it's an isekai and that element directly ties into the character and plot. Both are probably in my top ten of webcomics currently

I know why artists do this, it saves a lot of time, and it can help you figure out the perspective of an item at a weird angle. What I hate about it though is when the 3D model is changed at all, like the artist doesn’t draw over it or try to make it fit in with the rest of the art. It just sticks out, and it looks cheaper. The isekai fl flood is both a curse and a blessing. There's so many that you can filter through the bad ones and find a good one and you'll never run out of stories. Unfortunately they overcrowd the webtoon spaces, so it makes searching the romance tag a bit tedious if you're not in the mood for it. A personal recommendation for a webcomic about a fl who died a few times prior and now has another chance at life: The Broken Ring : This Marriage Will Fail Anyway It's REALLY spicy though! Like seriously, they buckabang a lot. I mean it, this is smut territory. It's so damn well written though and I really like the pacing and paneling. The art is so beautiful and you can really feel the despair of the fl. I don't think there's many people talking about it either which is a shame.

The last two points really are not only disrespectful to the readers but also the artist, because, as you mentionned in the last one, they not only have to basically make every pages full of hype, but there's also the time "limit". I've seen so many tutorials on how to do webcomics *faster and smarter* to the point of being worrying. It's almost the same problems with mangakas and manga's magazines in the end. Crunch time and capitalism guide to faster and lazier results (also, I'm not pointing the finger at beginners, we all heavily used the basic tools in our art programm at some point lmao).

I think “Rewriting the Villainess” is a good comic with the villainess trope, also for the scrolling thing, the webtoon “SOULWINDER” made a really good use of the scrolling for chapter 39. I think if used in the right way it can make really interesting transitions that can’t be made on a standard comic. (Not saying it’s better, I just think they’re two different layouts lol)

I’ve never spent money on Webtoon. It’s not a problem for me. I read the episodes when they come out and read daily episodes for the comics that are already completed. Webtoon does a great job of not shoving micro transactions down your throat or making me feel obligated to pay.

I just don't like their daily passes, you have to wait 24 hours for 1 pass but you aren't able to keep that episode unlocked, and you can only use literally one pass. So once you use it on a webtoon you have to wait 24 hours to read another webtoon with the daily pass feature. It's gotten to a point where if a webtoon has that I won't even bother reading it cuz there's no point of I can't go back and reread.

But I still like so many of them, I think because they end up being distinct enough from each other that it doesn't feel super same-y. Even if the art style ends up being VERY similar...

Sometimes I’d actually prefer generic gradients and random textures over some of the weirdly sterile backgrounds some comics have. Like two characters at a table in a blank room with no other furniture and just large expanses of empty wall and floor. The best tip I ever got was after your establishing shot, only 1 panel per page needs some sort of background. You can cheat the details, but fill the space. And if you’re in a character’s living space, you can use that for so much subtle story telling about their life and so many creators just slap on something generic as an after thought. It’s just so much lost potential.

I personally disagree with the whole scrolling format thing, I like it, a lot of cool things can be done with it. A really great example can be found on the very first chapter of the webtoon Homesick, when the protagonist is on the rooftop of a building and then looks down, that moment showcases the anxiety of the protagonist and it's filled with so much suspense... Something like that couldn't be done with the other format. In short, I like both formats, both of them have different strenghts and weaknesses.

at 7:00, the reason people use the dead line panels and bubbles shape is casue it is quick, most webtoons are about 40 to 60 panels long per week and drawing all the bubbles perfectly the first time is a time sink that could be better used in drawing the next panel, now some webtoon artist out there can draw at the speed of sound and can have the luxury of drawing EVERYTHING by hand but for old joe no talent who takes 60 min on just one panel it is impossible, also if dead panels and bubbles=less time for almost the same content I say go for it webtoon artist are already overworked as is

FINALLY someone talks about it! You hit everything right on the money. Oh my gosh 😩😆 I totally agree about everything you mentioned, the text bubble thing will always take me out of the scene because it would be this beautiful painterly style and then boom comic sans in a perfect circle comes to attack. When it comes to the " reborn trope " I really haven't seen anyone mention it even though I thought "Am I going insane? Why is every other new webtoon some girl getting reborn as a princess or a villain or a love interest overall? And why is no one saying anything about it??" So it feels good to know I'm not the only one who is a bit confused and slightly frustrated at seeing it so many times. That said, that doesn't mean I don't like the trope AT ALL, I just know that most versions of it aren't as creative or unique as they could be. I still really like quite a few of them and I have a few on my library and I read them for guilty pleasure 😆 Anyway, another great video as usual! I love your videos on these tropes and all the character design videos are usually some of my favorites! Your art style is so unique and fun! I remember reading this one villainess novel for the first time, and then I was like "hey I read this new manhwa." to my friend and began telling her the story, halfway through she says "Wait, I think I have read this one" And I was like really? I confirmed the female lead's name, and she said no, after a year of reading these manhwas and webtoons I realised how reused that theme really is. I still enjoy reading them, as sometimes authors add a little twist in the story, changing what happens in the start like an webtoon I read "villains are destined to die" they are not all bad but some are overly used

a lot of the webtoons i've ended up reading are in the scrolling format but don't have that issue with the formatting. they use the scrolling format in interesting ways and are overall very interesting stories. Nevermore and Eleceed are two i can think of off the top of my head that use the scrolling format but never feel slow or badly paced, Nevermore is fantastic and has a fantastic artstyle, with beautiful backgrounds and excellent transitions, and Eleceed has some presumably photo backrounds that still fit in very nicely and almost unnoticeably with the drawn-in characters and incredible fight scenes that work so well with the scrolling format and i'm not sure they'd feel the same in a comic page format.

I love Webtoons but what I dislike is that they feel a lot more artificial than mangas, especially Korean manhwas. There are some really good ones but then also there are ones that nail one thing (usually the gimmick or the characters) but fail at other things (usually the plot or overusing tropes). My personal favourite with the Villainess trope is When The Villainess Is In Love. I don't know if it's the most creative idea or anything but I love the maincharacter's fangirl energy. She really feels like a nerd trapped in their favourite series and just going full with her "must protecc my darlings" plan.

Very few scrolling comics have any thought put in to things like composition, pacing, basic designs, backgrounds, etc. I was read a Korean scroller comic about female boxers trying to teach a newb guy how to box. I actually really enjoy the villaness trope in a specific context, when it "flips the narrative" wether it's an isekai or not it's really cool seeing something from the villaness's perspective, where the stereotypical female lead is actually just really annoying and selfish. In the more "classic" tropes where the female protagonist is this really innocent, sweet girl who knows nothing of high society and all that I think most people will find her a little annoying and overtly clingy/selfish (ex, stealing the "villaness's" husband/fiance/love intrest, like ??? Who does that? Oh but it's ok, because the villaness is EVIL). So yeah, I think some villaness tropes are a good flip on that situation

It isn’t a webtoon but something I hate about books is you know when it seems if a character is reading anothers mind, like they think a question and it immediately gets answered. This can be a great and harmless or even funny thing to do but when it gets over used you have to start wondering if the writer just needs these questions answered and can’t be bothered finding another way to incorporate them or if there is actually some mind reading (or similar scenario) going on here.

Manga and Comics are lovely with how they do the panels, but I can't handle all of it. The pages overwhelm me sometimes and then I'll get bad anxiety from there being too much happening on the page. It really just depends what you like, but here's the thing: if you put the exact same panels there it would be just as boring in the page style format because they weren't drawn with dynamic posing. I get that the stereotypical setup is bad, but it's not the scrolling format it's just that the artist is bad at paneling and dynamic posing. There's some really dynamic ways to use the scrolling format.

If anyone's curious, Bakarina/My Life as a Villainess isn't the first, but it's generally considered one of the founding works for Villainess works. The Old Man Reincarnates as a Villainess is older, and IIRC both are preceded (in a narrow sense) by one work that's still similar enough for the same specific genre but can also just be argued to instead be one of the founding works of a very closely related genre. It all depends on how you want to cut things.
