I think it would depends on how big the fan is to move enough air. But it helps more if they manages to have a open window, say in line of the door to the room, so it better can circulate air from the other rooms with help of nature in form of wind. Otherwise, they would need a second fan at the door to the room to get the circulation going. Something I learned for a certification. You cant simply have a window open and hope it will circulate air or have a "extraction". You need to "encourge" the air to move from one way to the other for that to happen

Love how people forget that folks in different climates are used to THAT climate, might not seem hot to you because you live in a dusty frying pan year round but it's plenty hot for people who for years had summers that rarely left the teens in celsius.

I'm Australian and I perfectly understand them calling 30C hot, the difference between Texan and Australian buildings, and British ones, is that British buildings are built to keep the heat *in* rather than out, and between summers just generally getting hotter and frequent European heat waves the last few years I can imagine that they're getting quite unpleasant to live in.

Is it uncommon to have A/C units in the UK? I'm in Texas and I couldn't bare to not have AC units in the summer. I'm sure if I was born and grew up without AC I could deal with it.

Their windows are probably doubleglazed/insulated so they won't slide open, they'll have a small section at the top of the window that'll open outwards, for window units. As for wall units specifically, our inner walls are often made of brick so that makes the cost of instillation more than most people can afford.

@@insertname3977 Split units make that almost a non-issue. The compressor goes outside, and a hole about 5 or 7 cm is cut in the wall for the refrigerant line and the power/control line. The tools needed can be simply rented. The interior cooling unit just gets bolted onto the wall where the hole is. I got it to replace my failing central AC, which with parts and labor would have cost over $6,000 based on an estimate I got from an HVAC company. I got a 36,000 BTU split unit for about $2,500 (£1,944 just now, but I got it a few months ago). Smaller units can be had for far less. After that, all they'd need is possibly a ceiling fan (they hardly make any sound that a mic would pick up), which any mook can install themselves with the aid of Google-Fu. I've never hired a professional anything in my life, just a dude to cut the grass. I've done yard work before, too hot here in Texas, never again.

I'ts only warm enough to really need it about one month of the year, and that is with the climate going to hell in my lifetime. When I was a kid I don't ever recall it getting so warm that we needed more cooling than a fan.

Most of our houses were built before it's inventions, and and the currently common design of windows here, don't slide up or down, only a small section at the top of the window opens outwards.

They also don’t have mesh screens things over their house windows

@@chrisvan2688 we don't really have mosquitos(we have similar things in some places, but they are not common) also sash windows are pretty uncommon in modern houses, so the screens would be in the way of opening the window.
